style apotheca Thanks for this! I found myself feeling uncomfortable about buying things in the sales this year-and your naming that lack of control element reminded me why. I’m going to stick to my top 3-4 needs. So helpful hearing your tips! ❤️
i already shopped last week and this week also have returned them. i cant justify keeping them because theyre just not perfect for me. i initially thought id get it and try them out then get similar items on black friday. im planning to spend my black friday money on thrifting 😬
When I feel an urge to shop I re-watch videos from slow-fashion UA-camrs (UseLess, AlyssaBeltempo) who re-style their own wardrobe pieces. They give me inspiration and I get excited about my own clothes.
What works for me is to only shop at retailers who offer a full return policy of 30+ days. This always works for me. I rarely end up having regret purchases this way.
Thank you for this video. I have a major problem with impulse control and shopping during this season and these tips help. Also, I honestly just pray a lot for the Lord to help me be the kind of person that helps others and can spend their time and money in service. Im getting there.
Corina Favela Dave Ramsey talks a lot about what the bible says about money that I find very helpful. I’m not a religious or overly spiritual personal at all, but still find it helpful. I like the connections he makes to the biblical views on money and debt. Very helpful. Xo
I have a list of Christmas gifts that I’ve thought carefully about all year. I plan to avoid the chaos of the stores (and the pressure to make impulse purchases) by buying online. I’ve researched the most ethical and sustainable sources for my gifts and I’ll buy sales that meet those specific criteria. Like you, I’m a recovering shopaholic. I’m aware of my triggers and the questions I need to ask myself about the connection to any emotional basis in my purchases. I’m grateful for your honestly and for reminding me of my goals. 🙏🏻
Christina you inspired me to film a video today on this topic. It would mean the world to me if you would watch. 😊❤️ thank you for shinning your light on our YT world!
Girl, I HEAR YOU. You are speaking my realization and truth! 2020 is going to be my low buy year. I’M DOING IT NEXT YEAR. I am not shopping on Black Friday this year either. It’s crazy how my mind goes into a frenzy thinking I have to buy, buy, buy because I know I can’t next year. The madness has to stop and the scarcity mindset.
Ann G. R. YES! 2020 make it yours! Honestly I can’t believe it’s almost been a year since I started and I still feel like there’s so many more places to go and to GROW. A year truly is not a long time. You’ve got this. Xo
I love the Number of Stuff budget idea - I am not shopping Black Friday. I did a low buy in July which was helpful but the months following were definitely not low buy. Thus pattern showed me my dysfunctional relationship with shopping and things. I have now decided to reinstate the low buy and am working on what the parameters are for it today - your video has helped - thanks
I did shop, but have children so I bought a lot of things I intended to buy for them as well as a robot vacuum my husband and I had planned to buy for our Christmas gift. Also, following sustainable and minimalist UA-camrs really helps.
You just made me realize that Black Friday/Cyber Monday just gave me an excuse to shop for myself. Mostly on things I can resist at full price. I need to reconsider everything on my list to buy. Thank you for this video! It’s good to pin point your triggers and this is diffidently one of them. 😐
I am late seeing this, but I want to tell you that most of this information applies as much in January as it does for Black Friday. I really appreciate that you take the time to share your wisdom!
all my credit cards are frozen and my car just broke down so all the cash i had, went to that. saying no to black friday because i literally can't say yes!!! working on paying off my credit cards since October. Cannot wait to get them paid off in 2020!!
Great tips, Christina! I created a wish list 2 weeks ago and have been using this time to determine if I really need those items. I had 6 items on my list and now I’ve narrowed them down to just two items that I may purchase on Black Friday.
I need a TV and I have saved up for the one I want that fits what I need. I wanted to buy it last month, but my dad asked if I could wait till black friday or cyper monday to see if it goes on sale or not. I have the money now, but if it goes on sale I can save the rest of the money for something else, or just save it. So I'm waiting :) Also waiting really makes you realise if you actually need this item.
As it happens, it is nearly Black Friday 2023. (Still working forwards from the great beginning of you channel!) I think I’m going to adopt your approach of just don’t. Unless it is a food item that I know that I’m going to be running out of in couple of weeks to a month. Or perhaps a supplement of some sort that’s important to me.
Hey Christina, thank you so much for making these videos and sharing your journey. I have been inspired by you and a couple of other youtubers to do the same. From 12th Nov this year to 12th Nov 2020 I'm having a no buy year for clothes, even for second hand products. Thank you again, best wishes from Leipzig... xx
Hey beautiful! I'm keeping on track this year by remembering last year's Black Friday. I have an #allblackeverything sorta personal style so I bought a shit-ton of clothes from KillStar last year because it was all on sale. Well, the clothes were really poorly made and fell apart and looked way cheap and it was an epic fail. I was so mad but mostly at myself. I did NOT need any of that clothing, my closet was just fine, I just got greedy and wanted to take advantage of sales. I'm really trying hard to learn from past mistakes, so this year...I'm just not. Fantastic video! Keep up the good work! xo
Yet another late view on this video here, but I just want to say how much I appreciate you keeping things balanced in terms of your content. Fashion is a fun and creative process, but being wise with your finances and implementing intentional spending habits is just as important. Keep up the great work, Christina! 😊❤
I absolutely LOVE your channel !!! This year i decided to stay home during the black friday sales! I dont need anything and i usually create all my xmast gift anyway so theres no need for me to shop during that period ! Not against it at all like you said but im just being wise ! Its new for me to be this conscious about my money and your channel really keeps me on track ! Ive shared this video on fb to spread the word !! Good job, keep inspiring, you are wonderful ❤
Hi. another Kristina here (maybe not the same spelling?) Anyway, I totally relate about being a shopaholic. A lot of my own videos reflect this. Trying to curb my spending now that I'm a first time home buyer. I appreciate your channel addressing these types of financial/low buy topics.
This video is exactly what I needed. I’ve been unsubscribing from newsletters for about a week or so. Every time I get a new one I think of this video and get so pissed that they’re trying to trick me out of my money 😂😂 Staying strong in my no buy during this Black Friday.
Really appreciate this and especially your honesty. These are great tips! Another tip that works for me is to look at my debt or most recent credit card bill and decide if I really want to add to that. That has stopped me from hitting the purchase button on more than one occasion.
Gracie Girl yes! Doing the math is something I thought i was doing, but really wasn’t every time I looked at my statement. And then I really started to do the math with the budget. It’s an eye opener!
I plan to buy only planned and needed items. I’m watching the ads just for those items. I usually have to work on Black Friday but am meeting friends for brunch so I will go for a bit before that.
My budget for me this year is one thing. One Christmas gift. For other family members we agreed on consumables which I think is going to be great. No Black Friday for me.
There are some things I would like to have, and could get very good use out of. A decent phone case that doesn't take my kidney to remove (my disabled hands and arms are over this one and I need an easy one once I can get my dad to get this one off lol), Christmas gifts for my boyfriend. I'm curious to see if Hydro Flask will have a sale because their straw system looks like something that'll be easier for me at the gym. I know I don't need new makeup, clothes, or bags. I did buy ONE sweater at American Eagle recently because many of my neutral ones are too small. As a disabled freelancer with so limited and wish washy income, Black Friday can be a beautiful thing but I definitely don't want or need to go wild like previous years! Anything else I had my eye on, I put it on my Christmas wishlist. :P
The "shop your closet first" was a big challenge for me. I have been using the StyleBook App to help me. I took the time to put my entire closet in the app. The app feels like an online store and it is a store of my closet! That helped me rediscover some of my clothing. I also put in the prices that I paid (or my guess) and filled out as much of the supporting info as I could. The app has a calendar feature that allows me to enter what I am wearing each day. It then takes that data to show me what the cost per wear has been, which clothing pieces have the highest, which the lowest, which I have never worn! It takes the color data to show the profile of the colors in my closet. Basically, it does a lot of data analysis to make me understand where I have wasted my money. To shop my closet, I can take a photo of a look that I want to duplicate into the app itself and then find pieces of clothing to put on a story board inside the app to build that outfit. When I am feeling that urge to shop, I can use the shuffle option to make new outfits from my closet and then wear them to feel that gratification that I got by shopping. If I am considering adding something, I put it in under a "do I need this" title and let it be in my closet virtually for a month. At the end of the month, I look back on how often I would have reached for it. By the month time frame, the novelty had worn off and I rarely felt it needed to be added to my closet. It helped me make better decisions about my clothing shopping.
I tried the one in one out wth my wardrobe and it didn't really work for me. I had a lot of casual clothes and I wanted a few more formal shirts so I did that then I felt like I didn't have any casual shirts and all my shirts were formal. There wasn't a balance between the two.
I'm really trying to not go crazy with my spending this year for the holidays. I've told my husband that I don't want to do gifts and we've already told our family that we're opting out of gift giving this year. I need to get my student loans paid off in the next few months. It will be an amazing accomplishment for me if I could get through the holidays and stick to my budget. Lord help me if Everlane has a sale. Jcrew is already calling to me.
Im only purchasing items i need of its on sale. Recently my email has been flooded with sales. . Its tempting to purchase these things but im not going to.
I wanted to buy a cricket but the one me and my husband want is 500 and it would be for a business. Im trying to figure out if its worth it right now. And my debt is not yet done, i had some things get in the way. however If i am debt free by February I will start saving everything I own.I just realized i was being unrealistic and was saying i was going to give everything to the debt, but i cant do that other wise if something happens I cant fix it. But, no clothes, no shoes, no make up. Now to tackle the 80k my husband has that he needs to get down but wont tell me how much he owes.
December is my anniversary, my husband's birthday, and of course Christmas. I have my husband's wishlist and plan to shop for him and possibly a few other Christmas gifts. BUT, I don't foresee buying anything for myself. I have my wishlist I gave to my husband, so our deal is to not buy anything on our lists between mid-October and January. So the things I really want are off my list. It makes anything else seem kind of meh.
I tried it one year and to me it wasn't worth it. Most of the things I bought or wanted to buy weren't on sale or it was like 20 percent. It's never seemed worth it to me even before trying it.
I’ve made my Christmas gift list and I’ll have a look around and see if I can get any of the items with a discount. Is it poor etiquette to buy other people’s gifts on sale? Oh well😂
Are you guys shopping Black Friday? Why or why not? Xo

I just stay home and off the computer on Black Friday and Cyber Monday. Cleaning my house and decluttering keeps my mind off of it. 😁
Kathryn Predki I love it! ❇️

I’ve tried to remember that when we are in sale season, it just means me spend 50% less not save 50% more. 😊 Thank you so much for this video.
Christina you inspired me to film a video today on this topic. It would mean the world to me if you would watch. 😊❤️ thank you for shinning your light on our YT world!

Not all black Friday Deals sucks! If its something you know yougonna use buying it on a sale really does help save some money on the long run.

#StyleApothecaSquad!!💜🙋🏾♀️ Yess I needed this cause I'm doing my best with temptation of Shopping but I'm sticking to my no buy.
Myrna Joseph yes girl you got this!
I’d love to see your take on monthly budgeting and how it is helping you maintain low buy

I quit my job so I need to pretend like Black Friday doesn’t exist. It’s been giving me anxiety for about a month already lol xx
Hayley Lisa yes babe! Shift that focus! Xo
I try to use my time doing something else, like drawing or running, listen to music to relax and also really play with the things I have.
So excited someone is talking about this. Good for you and great work!

Off topic: What do you do with your hair? It always looks super shiny! :) I also like the length and the waves..are those natural?

good advice!!
I'm not, i just didn't feel the need to this year, can't explain it :)
I really just don’t care about influencers, I guess I just prefer thrift or handmade. My family just gives small gifts for stockings.
I wanted to buy a cricket but the one me and my husband want is 500 and it would be for a business. Im trying to figure out if its worth it right now. Mary Norton lol I think it’s a good opportunity if you plan for it, which it seems like you have! Xo
I recently bought an item that I didn’t need because I had gotten a 20 store credit :(
Dori C can you gift the item to someone?
Susan B good idea!
