800Frozone Strangely his hob goblin and the joker sound exactly the same. Yet when he plays fire lord Ozai or Master Eraqus he sounds distinctively different.
Norman Osborn created the Goblin persona. Kingsley's just a thief who couldn't come up with an original idea on his own, and that's ironic considering he's a fashion designer.
To be fair, Kingsley was also someone who stole other people's fashion designs when he first appeared in Spectacular Spider-Man's "belladonna" arc. So it is like him to steal people's looks!
Mark Hamill is awesome, hobgoblin in the animated series, luke skywalker, the joker, and the trickster as well as being that small character in the darksiders game.
Thanks. To be fair, while we decided to make user suggestions a bigger/more central part of our production process, we only added that aspect in April 2013 and we've been around since 2006 (!) with a library of 7000 clips, so we would not have run out of ideas even if we didn't ask you guys for ideas ;) - it's just that we prefer to give you guys what you want. Too bad they never used the Hobgoblin as the Main Antagonist in any of the other Spider-Man Movies. They should’ve had that same guy who murdered Uncle Ben Parker to don the Hobgoblin costume, since the Hobgoblin’s Origin is related to that of thief & petty thug Arnold Samuel "Lefty" Donovan. Imagine if he was somehow used as a test subject for Norman Osbourne to test the Goblin gear, and all because of one simple motive…..REVENGE.

I grew up with the 90s series, so I always preferred Hobgoblin over Green Goblin, however I completely adored the treatment the Green Goblin got in Spectacular Spiderman. Steve Blum, as always, sensational!
Though the Green Goblin is superior, the hobgoblin is always the most interesting. When you fight the Green Goblin, you know its Osborn you're fighting. When it's the Hobgoblin, you don't know if it's Kingsly, or some poor sap who's been hypnotized. Also he's one of the only villains to never get truly caught and even retired for a good while until Phil tried to take his mantel. And finally, while Osborne seeks power, Kingsly seeks wealth, as he was a well known mercenary for hire who eventually made more profit selling super villain/hero names/identity without lifting a finger. Also his costume looks cooler
haustyl12 and plus with the Hob Goblin, it makes you wonder if you're battling the Joker all along, hiding under a new identity to escape Batman's eye (since The Joker and Hob Goblin are both voiced by Mark Hamill)
haustyl12 But Green Goblin is more iconic, he killed Gwen Stacy and was the first villain to unmask Spider man plus the Green Goblin is Harry's father making his identity more interesting
Charles Floden Well I did say the Green Goblin is superior and the best Goblin. I just like the Hobgoblin more because of the mystery of his idenity, and how he's a very well calculated villain who knows what he wants and isn't insane like the Green Goblin
Rodrick Kingsley is the original Hobgoblin. I read the comics. He figured out a way of getting the strength without the insanity. In the 90's cartoon. The Hobgoblin showed up before the Greengoblin. Instead of the other way around. And they revealed him to be Jason Philip Macendale. He was also the Jack O'Lantern.
Another example of the animated series screwing up origins and characters. TBAS did that with Tim Drake splicing him with Jason Todd and mixed Hal Jordan and Kyle Rayner no idea why they did that.
Hobgoblin was always my favorite character. Amazing Spider-man #239 (his first fight with Spidey) is my favorite comic ever. However, you guys missed a key element in his backstory- Ned Leeds. After Hobgoblin lost the Battle Wagon, he kidnapped Ned and brainwashed him into believing he was the Hobgoblin. Ned, as "Hobby," traded information with the Kingpin until Jason Macendale, a failed mercenary, hired a man called the Foreigner to kill Leeds and steal his gear. Since Leeds didn't have the strength enhancing drug Kingsely had, he was overpowered and killed by the Foreigner's goons, allowing Macendale to assume the mantel as the 5th Hobgoblin (after Kingsley, Lefty, Ned, and Flash). Macendale was the Hobgoblin from the late 80s to mid 90s, where he was finally caught, and outed Ned as the "original" Hobgoblin. This caused Rodrick to come out of retirement, kill Macendale, and reclaim the mantle of the Hobgoblin... only to be caught two issues later by Spidey. Fun fact: When Ned was revealed to be the "original" Hobgoblin in 1987, the writers at the time intended for that revelation to be true. It wasn't until almost a decade later when a group of new writers, sick of the "new, improved" Techno-Hobgoblin, realized a big continuity error in the "Leeds is the Hobgoblin" story- the original Hobgoblin could lift a medium-sized car, and yet Leeds was killed by a small team of assassins with normal strength. The real Hobgoblin should've been able to take on and easily kill the whole squad, but the assassins actually broke Leeds' arm before they killed him, something that should be impossible. That error caused the writers to reintroduce the Hobgoblin in his original outfit, and give Leeds a much-needed retconn and ultimately Kingsley revealed that Leeds was just a patsy, just like Lefty.
Although I like Green Goblin as Spiderman's Arch-enemy (whenever Venom and Doc Ock aren't around) I like Hobgoblin more, because he isn't insane, isn't hampered by a split personality, and was clever enough to keep his identity a secret by way of brainwashing, money bribes, and doubles. Creating a mystery that went on for a long time before we found out it was Roderick kingsly...where as I think we all knew who green goblin was from the start. He also was smart enough to refuse to use the goblin tech or formula until he had worked out the bugs, same cant be said for Harry Osborn as New Goblin.
Me too. Better costume and actually more practical with covering his tracks and identity. I think of the original Green Goblin's time ending when he died the Night Gwen Stacy Died, so I sort of see GG as being a great adversary but painfully inept at keeping his plans together. I mean him killing himself with the glider for one and the constant amnesia and his laboratory being stumbled upon by many different people over the years. The guy was sloppy. Hobgoblin on the other hand had his shit together.
Nightman221k Well alright I respected your defense but still u have to give respect that is due. If not for green goblin we would not have hobgoblin. Hobgobllin is still a rip off of this magnificent villain. Venom is not really a villain to me because he has no real motivation. When he is not killing spiderman he does not do anything villainess. He even saved a baby from drowning. so how is he a real villain. doc ock , Osborn, and carnage are true villains. admit it only reason venom and hobgoblin gets so much love because they look cool, which is retarded. not calling u one just other people.
Everyone seems to be ignoring that Mark Hamill apparently voiced Hobgoblin on the TV show, just like he did with the Joker on Batman: The Animated Series just two years earlier....
Dropkick Piper I’m in agreement. I like the intertwined histories, and the combination of technology, horror and character development necessary to these guys personas. The movies kind of skipped the horror, leaving just the mania and a watered down terror.....
What's interesting is that Hobgoblin was created after Spider-Man let a petty crook go free, much like he did with the burglar who ended up murdering Uncle Ben. After Spider-Man gave up chasing the black dude because he was tired of crawling through the sewer, the criminal ended up discovering Norman Osborn's secret lair.
Also, something to keep in mind is that Hobgoblin was awesome when he was a mystery man but started sucking when the writers began fucking with his secret identity. The original writer, Roger Stern, was building up to a Roderick Kingsley reveal. Fans picked up on this and correctly guessed who he was, though, so when different writers took over before Stern could finish they decided to reveal Hobgoblin as Ned Leeds instead. This was in 1987, and only ten years later in 1997 did Roger Stern come back to set the record straight with Hobgoblin Lives. So for ten years it was continuity that Ned Leeds was the Hobgoblin. This was annoying to fans because all the blatant clues building up to the reveal pointed to Roderick Kingsley. Ned Leeds was a longtime supporting character who never exhibited any criminal behavior during the prior twenty or so years he had been featured in the comic.
Roderick Kingsley had an animated appearance in Spectacular Spider-Man... Hobgoblin was planned for season 3 and we got a taste of “Kingsley” having inconsistencies in personality when under duress. They also changed his occupation to a CEO of a perfume company (probably to justify the chemistry issue) It could have been great!
what always bugged me is that in the 90's series, in season 1, the episode 11, named 'The Hobgoblin part 1', you get a glimpse of Hobgoblin unmasked from the back. There you can see that he is black and bald. This, even though he is much later revealed to be someone of compleatly different complexion
Both Green Goblin and Hobgoblin could benefit a power makeover... simply because there's no way an ordinary, small satchel could contain a seemingly limitless supply of pumpkin bombs, etc. Unless it's magical.
You missed a large part of the story of Hobgoblin. He eventually sold his soul to the demon N'ashtra in exchange for the supernatural powers of a demon. The demon granted him power but exacted a price. He could no longer have a human appearance and must instead take the physical form of a demon.
No he didn't, because that wasn't this Hobgoblin. You're thinking of Jason Macendale, the wannabe Hobgoblin who tried to cash in on Kingsley's legacy. He sucked at it and eventually Kingsley killed him.
Yes he performed the Hobgoblin and later his revealed alter ego, Jason Philip Macendale, the latter a departure from the comic book version. Instead of a mercenary who switched from Jack O'Lantern to Hobgoblin, Macendale in the animated series was a street hood hired and trained by Osborn to assassinate Wilson Fisk. He later used his ill-gotten gains to finance a new socialite identity known as Jason Phillips, which he used to court Felicia Hardy until being exposed.
The Hobgoblin is still my favorite goblin. I'm glad to see him in the comics and hope to see him replace the Green Goblin in the movies someday. I think him setting other people up for the fall would be interesting and for Roderick Kingsley to get away at the end of the movie. Making him totally different than how the Green Goblin had been seen in the movies. The Hobgoblin is more of a thief anyway.
I think Hobgoblin was a really good villian in the Spiderman cartoon series. Probably the only reason though that Hobgoblin was able to beat Spiderman so many times was cause of the hang glider. And remember, in the cartoon, Spiderman didn't beat Hobgolin, Green Goblin did.
see and that is why I LOVE this channel I swear I had my own story about the Hobgoblin for so long I ddnt even really care. Thank you for setting this straight.
Hobgoblin has always been one of my favorite Spider-man villains ever since both a. he appeared in the Gang Wars cross-over and b. his Secret Wars action figure. Probably the most underrated Spidey foe ever. Do to the Hobgoblins demonic character design, a friend's bible-belting mother declared all comic books the work of the devil and took away her sons entire comic book collection and gave it to me! Tough break, but had some key issues I needed to fill holes in my own collection. Strange how in order to save her son from eternal damnation, she obviously didn't give thought to my salvation. Ah well, he's probably more successful than me and and living a better life.
Much like the Joker in the DCAU, most of the Hobgoblin's appeal is in Mark Hamill and his animated voice portrayal. Funny how the man who's been best known for playing the greatest hero in the universe is also, arguably, THE king of villains in voice acting
Green Goblin aka Norman Osborn first appeared in (comic) Amazing Spiderman 14 , when Norman died his son Harry took over as the second green goblin , but at no point in time was Harry Osborn the hobgoblin but in fact the second version of his father aka 2nd Green Goblin ----------- for everyone who keeps saying is Harry Osborn the hobgoblin, god pick up a damn comic book
I honestly believe that Norman is the better goblin. I mean Norman has done so much more as the Goblin. He found out Peter's identity, killed Gwen, ran the sinister six(not to mention the sinister twelve),brainwashed his own son into carrying on his legacy, orchestrated the entire clone saga, took over New York with a goblin army (that Hobgoblin was a part of),and when he "died" he simply came back over and over again sometimes even changing his face. Hobgoblin is good but I'd say he places sixth in the top ten.
Yeah Green Goblin is the better Goblin Hobgoblin is a Green Goblin ripoff. But im not going too lie his boss fight on Spiderman Shattered Dimension was pretty awesome.
Ryan Simmons I think they could've brought him in Spider-Man 4 where George Hill was on the roof of the Osborn mansion and discovers the lair of the Green Goblin.
Ryan Simmons Tell you what this summer when I'm out of school I'll work on a fan made script of Spider-Man 4 and I'll be giving it to Sam Raimi to see if he likes it. Even though it won't be produced I'd like to do something for him since he had several scripts of Spider-Man 4 written but still hated them.
i like both goblins in fact.. Both men have private identites that nobody suspects., Norman Osborn is a rich man, Roderick Kingsley and Jason Phillips Mcdendale were both rich too. i like it when sombody lives a double life..
@@lunakingsley.7247 true, the Kingpin was among the Green Goblin's prisoners along with Mary Jane Watson, Black Cat's mother, J Jonah Jameson, and other Oscorp board members
Whoa, I gotta nerd out for a moment but Roderick and Daniel Kingsley weren't twins. The were brothers that looked very similar (with the help of a hairpiece). I know, I know, seems like a nitpick but this was actually a point of contention for this characters insanely convoluted internal publication history. It's actually quite the story. If you want to see how bickering between writers and editors and all of the other crazy backstage shenanigans in the world of comics can affect what's put on the page, everyone (lol ok, maybe not everyine) should look more in depth at hobgoblins history. Its wild how nuts it got without having the story devolve into clone saga levels of terrible.
I LIKE THEM BOTH!!! The Green Goblin was great, of course. But he got killed and it was really labored the way they kept bringing him back. The Hobgoblin came along when the web-slinger himself desperately needed a shot in the arm -- and the Hobgoblin was perfect. I'm not choosing just because I'm "supposed" to.
I liked the original hobgoblin mystery in the comic books. Marvel kept us reading and guessing for months, years. It was fun. The demogoblin was cool too. It was confusing though because Jack O Lantern became hobgoblin for a while
In the 1994 Spiderman series Hobgoblin was voiced by none other than Mark Hamill. (aka voice of the Joker)

Timothy Phillips wow really? What a story. Hobgoblin has always been my favorite, also.
The Roger Stern Hobgoblin is the best. He did more with than Stan Lee ever did with Green Goblin.
Much like the Joker in the DCAU, most of the Hobgoblin's appeal is in Mark Hamill and his animated voice portrayal. Funny how the man who's been best known for playing the greatest hero in the universe is also, arguably, THE king of villains in voice acting
Hobgoblin is my favorite spidey villain. He was the best in the 90's Spider-Man! And even better that he was voiced by mark hamill
That moment when you close your eyes and hear the Joker fighting with Skeletor...
Ned leeds...
The Green Goblin for me - "BECAUSE I'M THE REAL DEAL YOU CHEAP IMITATION!!" GAHAHAHAHAHA ;-)
Hobgoblin vs The Green Goblin? Whelp Spidey, only one thing to do now... Get some popcorn, this'll be goooood...
I like Hobgoblin it makes me happy
Personally, I feel that Hobgoblin is (pardon the pun) criminally underrated. He needs to appear in more stuff!!
thank you watch mojo for doing the origins of the hobgoblin
HOBGOBLIN IN THE SPIDER-MAN SEQUEL FOR THE VILLAN PLEASE SONY / MARVEL MAKE IT HAPPEN
Fiiinally!!!! I asd for this in the comments a while ago!!!! Thank you
hobgoblin is way more fun than Green Goblin
"i´m such a bad hacker, Bad, Bad, Bad, Bad, Bad, Bad, Bad!"
loved that animated series.
i think in the animated series form the 90s they made the hobgoblin come before the Greengoblin
I wish he was in Ultimate Spiderman and should be the main villain for Spiderman:Homecoming.
they did
Who would have thaught that Darth Vader's son, Luke Skywalker, was also Batman's archnemesis and one of Spider-man's creepiest foes?
The Hobgoblin mask did appear in Spider-Man 3 between the Green and New Goblin masks.
Actually its the gold goblin
+BuddyGuard Dela Cruz there's no gold goblin in Earth-616, so that mask in Spider-Man 3 is the Hobgoblins.
+John03ication The movie isnt in Earth 616 it's in Earth-96283
it was the Green Goblin painted In gold
this was always my favorite goblin
Would've you love to see the Hobgoblin in Sam Raimi's Spider-Man trilogy?
Yes it would have certainly been something. Though I wonder how they could have gone about bringing him in?
Ryan Simmons I think they could've brought him in Spider-Man 4 where George Hill was on the roof of the Osborn mansion and discovers the lair of the Green Goblin.
Ryan Simmons Tell you what this summer when I'm out of school I'll work on a fan made script of Spider-Man 4 and I'll be giving it to Sam Raimi to see if he likes it. Even though it won't be produced I'd like to do something for him since he had several scripts of Spider-Man 4 written but still hated them.
Hobgoblin is someone i would like to see in MCU Spider-Man movies
Supervillain fashion designer, great idea
I wish the hobgoblin would show up more in shows, games and I hope the amazing spiderman 3
Gob Hobllin' all the way!
the 90s background story was actually what the Hobgoblin's creator always intended but he left the book before he could do it
i like both goblins in fact.. Both men have private identites that nobody suspects., Norman Osborn is a rich man, Roderick Kingsley and Jason Phillips Mcdendale were both rich too. i like it when sombody lives a double life..
kristian hove of course, Jason Phillips Macendale, who's been on the Kingpin's payroll before
@@damianprock1650 the only goblin to not be under kingpin's pay roll is new goblin.
@@lunakingsley.7247 yes, that's Harry Osborne, son of the original Green Goblin, Norman Osborne
@@damianprock1650 I know but as far as I know he is the only of the goblin's to not work with kingpin.
@@lunakingsley.7247 true, the Kingpin was among the Green Goblin's prisoners along with Mary Jane Watson, Black Cat's mother, J Jonah Jameson, and other Oscorp board members
I love Hobgoblin even more after his miniseries in axis
Matk Hamill should of voiced Green Goblin in TAS, that being said I love Hobgoblin. Hobby is the man
I love both of the goblins
Mark Hamill, God bless you. You're a great voice actor for insane villains.
Hobgoblin is more cool.. I would like to see him in the next Spider-Man Homecoming movie in the MCU..
you're welcome ;)
the hobgoblin looks better but in terms of a good villain I think the goblin is best
I really enjoy both green goblin and hobgoblin I think they go great with the comics and the 1994 tv series
Are we forgetting about the grey goblin?
Hobgoblin and Loki are my favourite marvel villains
No mention of my favorite: Demogoblin.
One of the best moments in the cartoon. Green Goblin vs Hobgoblin. And people said that show was no good.
Luke Skywalker's Marvel counterpart
i want to see Green goblin vs. Joker
I would pay to see that XD
Haha like a DC comic movie that would be epic
why he's so fucking boring? worst Villian ever...just lame
I wouldnt say Worst..though he is kinda boring...
Who is the most boring?
Holy nostalgia, why is this being recommended to me 9 years later?
Ned
I liked the original hobgoblin mystery in the comic books. Marvel kept us reading and guessing for months, years. It was fun. The demogoblin was cool too. It was confusing though because Jack O Lantern became hobgoblin for a while
Don't forget that Ned Leeds was also the Hobgoblin for awhile (he was the hobgoblin working for The Rose)
hey watchmojo if you didn't do a super villain origin episode on anti venom
We love the hobgoblins yeah because they are awesome and the best and the greatest and amazing and all ways wicked!!!!!!!.
Nobgoblin
Having the first big change the Hobgoblin makes be to the costume is a wonderfully subtle clue to point to the fashion designer.
