  • The pandemic saw an accelerated decline for the Airbus A380, with several airlines storing and even retiring their fleet of superjumbos during the height of the health crisis. Qantas was one of those airlines, having sent its fleet to desert storage in the United States. The carrier always said the A380 would come back, and it has. But for two of the giants, the pandemic has ended in a rather unceremonious manner…

I know the 747 is a much more iconic aircraft type than the A380, but it's still really saddening to see such a young plane getting scrapped. I just hope the remaining A380s get to live on for a few more years.

13 years old is still pretty young for a aircraft. Unfortunately there's really no other options...can't sell it, too expensive to operate, and storage fees have to be astronomical. Love to see one converted into a freighter, but for now seems like the wisest decision. The ones remaining will need parts eventually and possibly sell some parts to other carriers....

    • @brianmcdonald6519

Just an FYI Because of the A380's design, they are not able to be converted to freighters. So, as each one is retired, it will go to the scrap yard.

It’s actually TOO big to be fully utilised as a freighter apart from the previous mention of not being designed as one. Didn't mind flying in the A380. Always found it pretty smooth flying, even in heavy turbulence and relatively quiet, especially the upper deck. Can understand the reason for scrapping 2 of their A380's given that Airbus built the last A380 last year, so spare parts will be at a premium, especially if they are to continue flying the rest of the their A380 fleet until they are eventually replaced by the A350-1000.

I will always remember flying on an inaugural…it was special, if only just a fly-by between LAX-SFO for special friends.
My first commercial flight on the aircraft QF 380 took off next to a QF 747 from LAX, and after take-off the pilot could not stop talking about the better performance of his aircraft during take-off…shorter runway needed, slower speed needed, and other stuff.

Of course the 747 crew will be in their hotels enjoying their time off before the A380 eventually lumbers to its destination. As for the take off, approach and landing speeds- there's not a lot in it. Certainly it appears that the 747 is better in hot and high situations.
They're both good aircraft, but you need to consider how their respective introduction defined an era in aviation. I remember the first 747 flights- they were something to see, completely different to anything else on offer. Aside from Concord, a flight in a 747 was the highest you'd get in aviation and many airlines charged a premium for it. The A380 was still technologically advanced, but it didn't define an era of aviation in the same way. That's why they've barely lasted a decade and a half whereas the 747 has been in production before the European union's political project- airbus- was even formed.

As much as I think the 747 will always be Queen of the Skies, I don’t want to deny the accolades that the 380 has earned.
I remember the 1st time I took my brother to Europe on a VS 747, he had a notebook, and spent almost the entire flight writing about the 747. No other airplane can do that…and that’s what has made it Queen of the Skies.

I remember when the A380 was announced, I was surprised that Boeing wasn't following suit or developing their exciting flying-wing concept further. Their prediction that massive passenger jets like the A380 would not be profitable long-term seemed short-sighted to me. But they were right!

As an Aussie with ties to the UK, i actively seek an A380 - have you tried it..? super spacious regardless of which class you travel, super comfortable - all that mass damps any turbulence. Sadly economics means the world with only order large twin jets, but do you see how they pack the passengers into the 787s, 777s and A350s? Id pay a $200-$500 premium for the spacious A380 anyday - Emirates gets it - and i suggest you get it before you;re sardined into widebody twin - i reckon we have 10 years with qantas and 15 with Emirates - enjoy!

I agree with you fully, having flown A380 to UK and at present in Singapore on way back from the UK, we will only fly Emirates A380 in the future, much more space and less turbulence! We flew Singapore A350 because we wanted to stop over, but it will be Dubai for the stopover next time! By the way we will only fly Airbus as I worked at Broughton making the wings, and don’t trust the integrity of Boeing as far as I could through them!

When I worked for Qantas in the late 90s some brilliant bean counters had the great idea to sell off all our spare parts because they thought having millions of dollars worth of parts just sitting around in storage was a bad idea...except when we needed to order parts for a aircraft and the only thing we got was a message saying 'Nil Stock', which resulted in us having to cannibalize another aircraft for parts, then cannibalize another aircraft to fix that one...and so on...and so on!
This constant cannibalization of parts lead to at least one major stuff up when a line maintenance engineer came to the hangars to remove the dump valve from a 747 toilet waste tanks...without draining the tanks first.
This resulted in about 400 liters of poo flooding the planes aft cargo bay.
That plane never smelled quite right ever again! 😂
Hopefully they learnt their lesson and will keep some parts on hand.

Having told us that the ones to be scrapped are the 5th and 6th of QFs A380s, it leaves open the question as to why it is those airframes that are being scrapped. Are they nearest the next C-check? Do they use more fuel? Have they had more repairs done? Have their engines come near to then end of their working lives? Perhaps the first one has less cycles because it was under repair for a year after Champion de Crespingny's heroics? Just curious.

I expect maintenance schedules have something to do with it, yes. As well as that, VH-OQF was one of five main candidates which all had the old seating layout, whereas seven have been upgraded to the new layout. OQA, OQC, OQE and OQL are the other aircraft with the old arrangement, and I believe OQL has already been ferried for upgrade, and they said they wouldn’t scrap their first A380, OQA (which had the incident).

    • @raymarshall6721
      @raymarshall6721 Рік тому

There have been quite a few scrapped, it isn't airframe, it's costs to operate, store, and limits on where they can fly. 380s have been going through the scrap yards since at least 2021. They can't convert it into a freighter for a couple of reasons, one being how they have the decks designed (the mid floor is structural), and we also go back to it is limited to where it can fly due to size. Millions spent globally just to allow them into the few airports they can go to now... It would be even more to rebuild cargo ramps to take the weight of one. (Not to mention it's MTOW would make it less viable as a freighter anyway).

I worked 30 years in the commercial and private jet maintenance industries and this is very common place. Depending on the availability of spare parts and rotable inventories many aircraft can be worth far more disassembled than they are in one piece. The hair bus is charging too much money or does not keep a great deal of inventory then this will always happen.

It's so sad to see aircraft that were built to last 20 to 30 years in active service. But sadly huge aircraft of this type. The 747 family only lasted so long, because they had the airlines to build them for. But due to fuel economics, these 4 engine giants are a foregone era. Now it's the twin engined aircraft that will endure a long lifespan. The A-380 came too late unfortunately.

Other side of that coin is if Emirates didn't bankroll the A380 it would be speck on aviation history.

there are still daily flights of wings going out, but not as many as in pre pandemic times.
The A380 is just too large for most routes, and with airports in the UK have staffing problems
the last thing you want is more passengers than they can cope with.
