    Had a bad experience with a trainer who insisted i use a pinch collar on my 5 month, 10 lb, puppy, to stop his barking at people. He did instruct me in the correct way of using the collar, but I knew my puppy was smart, and could certainly learn to behave without the need of inflicting pain. I left the minute I realized this was so unfair to my pup. I 100% agree, to try the least harsh method that works. My pup learned all his commands through positive reinforcement, and certainly I have the time to work on socializing him. Thanks to you, my pup has been improving in his behavior little by little, no pain required EVER again

    As a certified dog trainer myself I tend to find learning happens quicker by allowing the dog to think and earn the reward, rather than forcing them to do something where they don't really need to think. Positive reinforcement all the way!

    Another good "punishment" is time-outs!
    You can do that by just calmly removing the dog from the situation that is causing the unwanted behavior, then re-introducing them after they have calmed down.
    It both helps with anxiety dogs and excitable puppies!

  • @LynnMcfatter

    I was raised with GSD & ecollars, when I moved out, I got my own GSD & switched to R+ training. WOW! What a difference it makes!! My boy & I have the strongest bond & communication! He is fearful reactive to dogs, but he’s come so far with R+. I love watching your videos & appreciate you addressing why R+ is such a great option.

    • @nancyg7051
      @nancyg7051 3 роки тому +5

      We have a GSD puppy and the trainer has us using the ecollar and I'm starting to think it is a mistake. I am seriously thinking of just using the sound as a clicker training type thing and eventually use the ecollar to keep her in the yard ultimately instead of an electric invisible fence. Puppy was bite-y and rather aggressive at first but I think it was my fault more than hers. Trying to focus on positive reinforcement instead.

    • @LynnMcfatter
      @LynnMcfatter 3 роки тому +3

      @@nancyg7051 You can always make the switch to R+ training 😃 I gave it a try to see the difference & it’s been the best! Of course it’s not as quick as other methods, but GSD are highly intelligent & learn quick. Honestly I think the best part has been how my dog knows I understand him & we can resolve the issue together. The trust, the communication, the bond... it all is so much stronger! He made a video about off leash training & showed a baseball park with a long lead. I did this for a while with my GSD & it truly worked.

    My dad got me your book for Christmas. Usually I’m like “I can just watch UA-cam videos” but the book actually helped me with a few things for a 11 month old boxador pitbull mix. He is the sweetest dog I’ve ever met and don’t understand how he was mistreated and how someone could do that to him. But the only thing he did was nip on my beard and try to pet my face with his giant paws so he was just so friendly but didn’t understand his size. Thank you Zak

      @@JustBill82 I agree, and you can definitely raise conscious, understanding and self-regulating children with an empathetic approach. I wouldn’t recommend using incentives to influence a child’s behaviour, because like you said we want children to make the right choices based on morals and ethics, because they understand how their decisions can impact others, not because they’ll get something in return. I got a puppy three days ago it was a surprise and I was not ready at all, I’ve been watching your videos for atleast 4 years already but! My dog is too young and I was worried he is a chihuahua 3 weeks doesn’t even have teeth yet. There was also was a blizzard today and I was just seriously worried that I couldn’t take care of him.

    That's a number siren, designed to produce ground vibrations, which warn the hard of hearing and (and this was the main rationale for developing it) the dufuses wearing headphones, unaware of what's going on around them.

    Actually when done correctly corrections are very beneficial to your dog as they make it clear what is acceptable and what is not.

    Love your videos! I'm wondering about how important it is to be consistent with command language? I've noticed you quite often change up commands a bit, eg you might use "kona come" and then "kona come on", and to look at you "look at me", and then "here". Im currently deciding on which commands to use for what, I like "come here" because it's quite natural and most will probably use that to call my new puppy just from reflex, but I just presumed it needs to be consistent either way. Appreciate your insight!

    Hello. Love your videos.. I got a new puppy, and it's 13 weeks old .. I am having problems with the dog about anxiety of me going out of the room and leaving the house.. the puppy Follows me around but I know it's a puppy.. got any tips, Tricks, or videos on this. That would be great.. and the one more think to ask for is what about bitting at the Ankles.. kept up the great work and teaching us about owning a great puppy. Thanks again great job. 👍

    Really liked the explanation of positive reinforcement vs punishment.

      A punishment correction IS NOT what this idiot said it was. Look up American canine educator he will explain it better and show how to properly correct a dog with ramming food down there throat.

    My puppy, Dominic, is a newborn right now. I will be going to visit him in a couple of weeks at the breeder's house. He is a Cavalier Spaniel. In Cavalier Spaniel training, they do not respond to punishment well.
