    I tried making SSTO space planes several times, but was only able to occasionally get suborbital. Using a recreation of this SSTO, I reached orbit with over 2k delta-v despite a sub-stellar ascent path. Managed to rescue 6 kerbals stranded on a failed space station in LKO (I added a mk2 probe core to get an extra seat on the ride home). My landing was rough, but it feel good to reclaim 100% of the cost! Thanks for all the videos they are super helpful!

      +Matt Lowne OH an matt, what do you think of the drag and aerodynamic mechanics? I personally think it's way too difficult to send a SSTO in an interplanetary mission, because I either lack fuel or not enough thrust to get a LKO :/ I wish they could nerf it a bit and rethink it so we can make ssto like in the good 'ol days :)

    • @MattLowne
      @MattLowne  8 років тому

      Nah it's fine, I was never too fond of the old "intake spamming" tactic. I don't really like the heating mechanics though. I understand why they added them but it makes building interesting SSTOs impossible due to the fact that they just explode on re-entry.

    At long last!
    No craft file has been added to the description, you need to build it yourself! As for part 2, it has been filmed, and will show you how to build a 6-seat *Duna SSTO!* It is scheduled for upload in 2 weeks, to give you lots of time to get used to flying to Minmus and back.
    Next Saturday, a new episode of *"Duna Attacks"* will be uploaded. Trust me, it's going to be a good one ;)
    Anyway, the topics of the next tutorial:
    1. How to build a Duna SSTO
    2. How to fly to Duna
    3. How to land on Duna like an aircraft (i.e. horizontally, not vertically)
    4. Ascending from Duna
    5. Getting a 70km orbit around Kerbin from Duna using aerobraking alone (apart from to raise the periapsis again once your apoapsis is at 70km)
    6. How to land at the KSC from a *45 degree orbit* with NO FUEL!

      Duna attacks :O
      I know I'm probably annoying you from commenting right now but I have a suggestion
      For duna attacks, could you make use of a large VTOL craft designed for salvaging and delivering a derelict artifact left on duna? It might add more to the plot, for example, studying it and finding a key military base?

    I have no clue what I did wrong, I built the exact craft, five times, and every time by rapiers would run out of air, so I would switch the mode, then they would almost instantly run out of oxidiser, and the nuclear engine doesnt provide the thrust needed to keep going, ending in a fiery crash.

    My first functional SSTO comprised a body structure of a Mk 2 body with Mk 2 attached to the sides, since it increases the amount of area that I could attach engines to. It had 4 Wiplash Engines on the side mounts, and two rapiers on the center body. It could BARLY get into orbit and back, and it lost stability during decent (which might be because of my flying skills), and it had to do a hard splash down, so it loses its engines, as well as other things. I made it a month ago.
    My second spaceplane that could get into space and survive re-entry (due to not being able to achieve orbit), was much smaller, and only used two rapier engines, 2 Mk 2 to 1.25 m adapters attached back to back, a mark 1 inlinecockpit with a shock cone intake, it also flew VERY well and took off almost instantly. I made it 2 days ago
    My third spaceplane was the first to achieve orbit, return, and survive with no lost parts. I made it last night and it has a lot of potential. It also looked almost exactly like the SR-71 blackbird. It had a Mk 2 profile, with 2 rapier engines on the back, two Wiplash engines in the wings, and it was drone operated.
    Any thoughts on how I did things?

  • @timsebring7188
    @timsebring7188 8 років тому +7

    I could be wrong, but I think the "bug" you saw in not being able to target Minmus was because you were time warped. The actions you can perform on the map screen are limited when you're anything higher than 1x time. (again, could be wrong, but I thought you were at a higher timewarp level)

    so, new to KSP, im on PS4. after getting all sorts of SSTO designs into orbit, ive been trying to get a design that will get me to the mun or minmus and back. I prefer aircraft to rockets, just like I prefer steak to spam in a can :)
    first off as Matt designed it - this thing works, and works well.
    I made a few modifications that I think suit the mission (I mean what good is going to minmus if you cant do anything there except plant a flag, do a crew report and make yourself a bowl of minty desert... by this I mean a surface sample? )
    1. I took Matt's basic design and added more wing and a MK2 drone core because I suck... and none of my pilots have the manuver hold skill yet :(
    instead of a swept wing and a wing connector A... mine gets a full delta wing and one of the rectangular wing connector forming what is called a clipped delta wing (like what the F15 has) my modification has way lighter wing loading than the original, ie: it climbs faster for the same amount of fuel burned the larger wing allowed the addition of dedicated control surfaces at the trailing edge: the inner pair for pitch and the outer pair for roll, which is how delta wing aircraft without horizontal stabilizers usually lay out their control surfaces since roll is best controled from the outer edge of a wing.
    2. I added wing strakes forward of the lateral tank assemblies, and offset them back until the CG and CL were where I wanted them. I also added a pair of wing connector type Ds into the gaps formed by the short mk2 to mk1 adaptor and the lateral tank assemblies at the rear of the plane. this further added lift. plus... the strakes and gap filling connectors look super sexy.
    3. deleted one pair of vertical tails, and left the pair on the lateral fuel tank assembly with the barest hint of dihedral, set for yaw control only
    4. with the lower wing loading I increased the payload of the aircraft, extended the fusalage to include a short cargo bay behind the crew cabin. filled this bay with a science junior, and all the other available science toys. you could possibly delete the crew cabin and short bay, add a full bay and loft cargo to minmus in the realm of 6 tons maybe? enough payload for a compact rover or ? ?? certainly could be great for small sat launches or maybe a subcompact lander for mun landing and departure using the SSTO as a mothership? not so sure about trying to Mun land 40+ tons of SSTO on one LV-N, and then get it back to orbit.
    5. added a folding comunotron on the roof of the mk2 cockpit.
    6. added a set of backwards mounted and offset shock cone intakes onto the ends of the rapier engines, forming a "rapier spike" engine
    supposedly adding a shock cone or a small nose cone to the end of a rapier engine improves the drag coefficient quite a bit (the game drag model really penalizes open connection nodes) since the exaughst eflux doesn't destroy the shock cones or nose cone when you offset them into the rapier engine I consider it fair game.
    7. used medium landing gear with the rears set to "dumb" because I prefer the ground clearance, and it IS a 45+ ton aircraft. also the taller gear allows for belly mounting contract test items with a pylon for easy jettisoning if you run item test contracts for lolz and profit.
    or if you are feeling destructive you can drop full mk1 fuel tanks with nose cones on either end on the administration building... good times. :)
    8. last but not least, I added 2* of positive wing incidence to the main wing components, allowing for a favorable angle of attack while pointing prograde in the atmosphere, further reducing drag.
    with the modifications listed - it goes like a raped ape. and is as agile as an oiled up stripper on extacy.
    shakedown flight it got airborne at 70kph, and maintained a 30* climb and was doing 600ms+ with the rapiers puming out 320+ kn by the time it hit 10k
    managed a 100k apoapsis with more oxidizer than Matt had. I burned it to circularize (no sense in lugging it to minmus... though I guess I could have burned it on my trans minmus injection burn)
    final 100x100 orbit I had roughly half of the liquid fuel I started off with... not bad.
    THANKS FOR THE HINTS AND THE BASIC AIRFRAME MATT, this was just the design I needed I think.
    I've chrisened the modified version "Taipan mk1" if I try out a version with the longer cargo bay and no crew cabin I'll designate it the Taipan mk2.

    • @MattLowne
      @MattLowne  8 років тому +2

      Thanks for taking the time to write such a long comment, I'm glad my design was helpful! And yes this is what I wanted from this video, to hear about people who were able to modify it and use what they learned to apply it to their own builds! The reason I went with the 4-seat crew cabin over a cargo bay is that it's heavier than a cargo bay, meaning that if you wanted to switch it out for science kit instead the aircraft shouldn't need any major alterations to accommodate it!

    • @stinkyfungus
      @stinkyfungus 8 років тому +1

      I have a strange urge to pile Jeb, val, and 4 scientist kerbalinas
      into the Taipan send them to minmus with a boat load of science,
      and then have Jeb claim minmus as supreme dictator for life and
      hang out with his queen (val) and his concubine horde. (female scientists)
      so I needed seats AND the cargo bay
      :)

      I'd take a long hard look at At Matt's ARGUS series... not the original argus, the endignine(sp?) class.
      I think that might have the legs and and payload to do mining. as a total KSP noob im still scratching the surface of intercelesial spaceplanes Matt has it down pat.
      I can build SSTOs for low to medium kebin orbit easy, and atmospheric aircraft are a cinch. but I still want to make a mun return capable rig of my own design.
      getting there I can do... getting back, not so much.
      I think alot of it is I just dont know what the most efficient landing technique is.
      save the delta V for getting an orbit and use it for a suicide burn? or get an orbit and do the slow gradual decent?
      or maybe a steep decent from a moderate periapsis? donno, I fly planes... I'm not a rocket scientist :)
      i have learned that minmus is alot easier, it takes almost nothing to land there or take off.
      the up front delta V price is higher, but after the initial investment its far more forgiving.
      and if you are patient enough getting back to kerbin orbit is pretty cheap.

    • @renegadegray1890
      @renegadegray1890 8 років тому

      Agreed, I already have an orbital scanner over minimus, and a first attempt at a mining rig that's on the surface...with half its landing gear intact. It's in a terrible LZ for mining, and I'm not sure it can even take off again, but at least its a 'successful' proof of concept. Just kinda looking for an idea for a better rig.

      Actually, I tried it again. And although the oxidiser runs out, if you take off with a shallow AOA and build speed first you can take this all the way to Duna. I needed to do an aerobrake at Duna and slingshot around Ike to circularise. I got lucky.

Also great work on the tutorial, I was always able to make a Kerbin orbital SSTO in career mode, but never really go beyond Kerbin orbit without refueling. Certainly helps out in designing new planes, never really looked up tutorials till now, after a nice 350 hours in game.

      +Matt Lowne Anyways, finally got to testing your craft design, I made it to Minmus and back on my first attempt with about 400 fuel left using quicksaves with a science payload in the bay instead of a crew cabin. I landed completely intact after running out of electric charge and tumbling through the atmosphere for about 10 kilometers. Still made it home after it stabilized though for some reason the Kraken kept eating off a part of my left wing AFTER landing at KSC Runway. Tried the landing about ten times, kept getting the same result, wing just kept going poof for no discernable reason. Second attempt I did without quickloading even once, though that attempt I got a bit hasty, screwed up the Minmus approach and got a overall bad orbit. I made it back home to kerbin but ran out of fuel and overshot the runway by about ten kilometers, couldn't get the craft to turn around and glide back, so I had to settle for a water landing, landed in the ocean smooth as silk.

    I did it! I modified the design with emergency ejection of the cabin and parachutes, which worked out well since we ran out of fuel just after making the burn to enter atmosphere and ended up with an ocean landing site :/

      It's a bug with 1.1, I'm hoping it will be fixed soon! They do work, you just have to be really patient and keep trying until it gets off the ground, and don't pitch up too sharply or it will over stress the gear. If you're still having trouble, try using the medium sized landing gear instead!

    An easy way to explain when to burn is the timer is based on being able to get that delta v in an instant and since the plane can't burn all the delta v needed at once you burn for half the time before the burn time and half e time after so if your burn will be 1 minute long you start the burn 30 seconds before burn is supposed to start and finish 30'seconds after for most accurate burn

    Has anyone tried this same SSTO recently? I built one almost exactly like the one in this video and I cannot get into orbit. I follow the same ascent profile, fire the rockets at about the same time, but I can't get the apoapsis up much higher than 70 KM and by that point I can only use the atomic engine, which doesn't provide enough thrust to raise my periapsis in time. Has anything changed in the past year that would change the effectiveness of this vehicle?

    Personal general rule of thumb:
    Shuttle-type SSTO (Mk. 1 or Mk. 2)- 2 Rapier engines.
    Minmus-capable SSTO (Mk. 2)- 4 Rapier engines, 1-2 Nuclear Engines.
    Light Interplanetary SSTO (Mk. 1 or Mk. 2)- 2 Rapier engines, 1-2 Nuclear engines.
    Medium Interplanetary SSTO (Mk. 2 or Mk. 3)- 4-6 Rapier engines, 1-2 Nuclear Engines.
    Heavy Interplanetary SSTO (Mk. 3) 4-10 Rapier engines, 2-5 Nuclear Engines.

    Why do people use the shock cone intake when using the circular one is simply better, its the same intake for less weight, lighter aircraft = more deltaV.

    • @chriss5112
      @chriss5112 7 років тому +1

      works better at higher velocities

    • @Aereto
      @Aereto 6 років тому +1

      And circular intakes lose a lot of air intake at the air speed the Rapier engines want to be flying in, leaving said engines to be oxygen-starved and lose throttle. The shock cone intake has the highest max speed intake ceiling of all intakes, but still has to deal with the absolute altitude limit where the air is too thin.

      Sean McNeely Are you a native German speaker? And perhaps I'm not purveying it correctly via text; it's not easy to make sounds that way. It's like ooo with a "uuu" like oo/uuh. Not like "oooh! look at that!" but more of the "ou"of "would". All I know is there's *definitely* no "eee" as in "Free"

    • @MrHackTheGibson
      @MrHackTheGibson 8 років тому +2

      +Boltzmann alrighty then, boss. One of my closest friends is a native German speaker, and that's literally the exact way he described how to pronounce the umlaut u; by saying "ee" with a "oo" mouth shape. That's why it's sometimes written as "ue", as in the surname Müller/Mueller.

    i guess a huge benefit of using a plane vs rocket is that you recover most of the parts on returning back to Kerbal, so it ultimately costs less... i'm building a base on minmus and having to do it in 2 journeys at 120k per voyage, very expensive. i need to get 6k units of liquid fuel up there, that shit weighs a ton!!!

    You don't want your canards to be directly in front of your air intakes because (especially at high angles of attack) your intake will be sucking in the turbulent air, and that can cause a whole bunch of problems. I don't know if KSP simulates this.

    I actually made it to Duna on this SSTO after recreating it in my KSP (and disabling the Kerbal atomics mod that changed the stock nuclear engine to use lqd. hydrogen, which screwed me over in the first couple of attempts).
    I could not land on Minmus because I botched the ascend and had not very much fuel left but I made it back to Kerbin, nearly overheated the Cockpit during reentry (even after four aerobraking passes, the last one just got to low in the atmosphere) and I had to land without fuel at night somewhere on the western continent from the ksc after I thought I can make it over the ocean and ran out of fuel just shy of the coast. At least I could glide back and land savely.
    I now hope I might be able to recreate something like this with my own designs XD

    I think my proudest moment in this game was when...
    I made a rescue mission after my ssto was attacked by the kraken on Minmus.
    I launched a rocket to go and save bill, (Jeb had died during the strike of the kraken)
    I landed my second stage on Minmus,
    I flew bill over using his Eva jet pack.
    I launched my second stage off of Minmus and made the bun back to Kerbin without using a circularisation burn.
    Hit kerbins atmosphere engaged my 10m heat shield.
    Then slowly defended down into the sea.
    Then I wrote this and missed several minutes of this very video.
