Dirt bike = narrow tire
Tanks = long and narrow tracks
Tractors = tall and narrow tire

With mud a wider tyre may find more traction from the sides of the ruts. Another thing is a conventionally sized tyre (say a 265) may provide more road grip than a skinny on the road (225). Other than that wide tyres are eye-candy and a healthy profit for the tyre company
This video is the cherry on top for my decision to switch to narrow 35s! Im curious how much my mpg's will improve with the 4 cyl diesel. Thanks for the information and clarity on the topic! Subbed!
When deflated, wider tyre not neccessarily increase contact patch, at least not as propotiobally as narrower tyres. E.g a 285r17 from 60psi deflated to 30psi only increased patch by 20% while narrower 255r17 at 80psi deflated to 40psi increased patch by 35% which made them a lot closer in contact patch size than people might have imagined. It is far closer than 285:255

not what I was expecting ; 4x4 marketing people actually talking some common sense ; but then Iron Man don't sell tyres ;)
Mud driving : the old say of narrow tyres cut a track refers to formed dirt roads ; the roads no one should be driving on when they are wet/boggy .
Just for interest ; I have 225 75 16" , still nearly too wide imo

Narrow tyres mean more pressure per square inch, thereby increasing traction.
Wider tires offer benefits when turning and helps with cornering stability
The local P platers with their mud tyres destroy the public sand roads here.
