Just got mine done for the first time today. I was sweating it. Not because I thought it was going to be that bad. I've had more involved surgery, but I just get anxious about any hospital visit.
It wasn't fun, but it really wasn't that bad either. Follow the diet, drink the swill when you're supposed to, and it all works out, so to speak. Definitely get the prep solution as cold as you can. Have some clear soda and hard candy on hand, and beef broth is good too up to the point where you have to stop everything the night prior - usually midnight it seems. The hot broth gave me the illusion I was eating something substantial and helped stave off the hunger a little bit. If you're not a meat eater, I supposed vegetable broth so long as it's clear. They offer the option of ondansetron (nausea meds) to take as well. I think it helped. Just one little pill half an hour or so prior to drinking the stuff the evening prior and morning of.
It's well worth the peace of mind to get done.

@@kenofken9458 the day of the procedure, I was nervous. It was “twilight anesthesia”, meaning I wouldn’t be asleep all the way. I did all the right prep, the gastroenterologist put me at ease, the anesthesiologist asked me some questions, I was moved into a separate place, told to roll over to my side, saw the anesthesiologist open a medicine pack, put it into the IV pole, turn it to the right, then seconds later I felt sleepy. I woke up about 45 minutes later and it was over and everything okay. I could have driven home if I wanted to, that’s how great of a job the anesthesiologist did. But didn’t. Just ate a nice hearty dinner after starving myself for a day.

Hi from Canada. This explanation is totally different than my experience. I had to go through the cleansing procedure. However during the actual screening I was totally awake and watched the whole procedure on a monitor and was very thankful for that. It was very enlightening to see and I didn’t have any doubts about the health of my GI tract. Am going again soon and am hoping for the same procedure.

Here in the UK you are not anaesthetised for a colonoscopy. You can have sedation if you wish, or gas and air is available. I am having one soon and I will be able to watch it on a monitor, which I think is very interesting. It's my body, I want to see what it looks like from the inside!

I’m 16 and my doctor wants this done because of stomach issues I’ve had for a year and a half. My mom said she won’t make me but there is not a single bone in my body that wants this done. I have bawled my eyes out because the idea of it is so invasive. I don’t know what to do

I just had mine done today. Do it. I was scared/worried as well. I'm not in pain or anything. It was fast. The prep was the most annoying part, but even then it wasn't actually that bad as well. Good luck and don't let fear get you.

Just had my second Colonoscopy yesterday. Piece of cake procedure.
The worse part is the prep solution and that's not bad at all. I used the Pedilyte - Berry Frost flavor and placed it in the refrigerator. Not bad at all. You have nothing to be worried about as far as the procedure goes.
      Check in
      Get undressed
Get wheeled into the exam room

      Wake up 15 minutes later

If a doctor is watching this I hope they can answer my question. I recently had my 4th colonoscopy over a 20 year period, my 10th time under anesthesia. For the first time I vomited during a procedure and woke up with a horrible sore throat. The post op nurse just said “You vomited. There’s nothing we can give you for that.” Then they couldn’t wait to get me out of there. I was concerned because my son vomited and aspirated during a colonoscopy and ended up in the hospital with aspiration pneumonia. The severe sore throat and tons of mucous lasted for days gut fortunately my lungs were OK. My question is - in the surgeons clinical notes they only said everything went well. Shouldn’t they have added that I vomited during the procedure?

I was thinking the same thing before I had my procedure 4 years ago. Many snake oil salesmen will try to convince you that the average American has 5-10 pounds of fecal matter in their colon, which isn’t true. If that was the case, you’d lose quite a bit of weight during the prep.

@loumason6120 At 47, I had mine done for the first time six days ago in Arizona. This was also the first time I'd undergone anesthesia. I was very nervous. The prep they gave me was Gavilyte. The procedure and experience itself went exactly like they showed in the video. They gave me an oxygen mask, had me roll onto my side, told me they were starting the anesthesia, then I was out. The next "moment," I was waking up in the recovery room with the Dr., the nurse, and my wife. From the moment I was wheeled into the procedure room to the time I woke up was about 21 minutes. It was very quick, painless, and nothing to worry about. The prep was definitely the worst part, but even that wasn't as bad as I'd imagined it would be, I just had to be in the bathroom for about 90 minutes after taking it. It really does clean you out, and I found some peace of mind knowing that as well.

I personally haven't had one yet being only 44 years old. I'm from Canada and here the screenings apparently start at 50. There are apparently modern methods offered her such as a FIT test which is done at home or a flexible sigmoidoscopy which just examines the lower part of the colon. Not having had the first hand experience myself, I ask myself, how bad can a traditional colonoscopy and a traditional prep really be?

The drugs to provide comfort during the procedure I found unnerving. I was fully awake for the first one. I do not appreciate having blocks of my memory eliminated by these nasty drugs (propofol) used to induce sedation and block memory. The entire process is barbaric.
