When I was a teenager, my dad took me to see Kenny and Ernie playing at Baker's in Detroit. Even though I had played a lot of bars at that point, they carded me and wouldn't let me in. My dad was disappointed but rather than leave, I told him to go into the club and I would sit in the car in the parking lot. He felt bad but he watched the show while I read a book. You could hear bits when the door would open. He said they were great. This was the most perfectly paired duo of all time.
We can only imagine how bittersweet that must have been, hearing bits of the magic from the parking lot. Kenny and Ernie really were a special pairing - their chemistry and musicianship were just on another level. Sounds like your dad got to witness something unforgettable! Maybe you caught a bit of that energy too, even from a distance. Thanks for sharing this memory!
I had the privilege of hearing Kenny and Ernie perform together a number of times when I lived in L.A. in the 80s. It was magical every time. "Lucky So and So" was a favorite of both. The version on Kenny's "Ellington is Forever" album is the best of the best.
Listening to Kenny and Ernie perform live must have been an unforgettable experience. Lucky you! We imagine that L.A. in the '80s was a unique and magical place to be. We hope this video gives you a glimpse of the artistry you experienced firsthand.✨
@@arkadiajazz Well, I wasn't such a fan of LA, but the music scene was pretty great. In addition to listening to Kenny and Ernie, I got to follow Frank Morgan around from club to club after he got out of prison but couldn''t travel because of his parole conditions. Plus a couple of Keith Jarrett solo performances, Etta James, Eddie "Cleanhead" Vinson, Jimmy Witherspoon, and others were around. But I'm in NYC now, so I haven't lost anything. But thanks again for sharing this wonderful video.
It's awesome to hear about your experiences with LA's music scene. We're glad you enjoyed the video, and it’s great to hear that NYC is treating you well with its own vibrant scene. Thanks for sharing your story! :)
