So lovely. Kenny has always been the epitome of class and musical restraint. He doesn't bother with flash. His lines actually SAY something. He's one in a trillion. BRILLIANT!!!
Howdy Mike , you're the fellow with guitar lessons here on YT aren't you ? you make some good observations here and don't do too bad in the guitar department yourself . I remember as a kid mostly listening to big band , Ellington and Goodman and rock was of the guitar of the day . Sonnys Bridge Album with Jim Hall opened jazz up for me and then I got Kennys Guitar Forms . It was like travelling to another dimension ! OTW ! I'm only lately now in my old age getting to actually playing some of Kennys stuff , working on his arrangements of xmas tunes where corny as they may be to some Kenny shows again where his real brilliance lies , as you say , "actually SAY(ing) something" ! putting chords together true to the melody and getting complicated jazz lines actually work in a down to earth way with no pretentious jazz noodling . I could go on but listening is believing , try , ua-cam.com/video/U5coy1E1PvA/v-deo.html
I guess I'll haveto agree with you on the "doesn't bother with flash" too . While some other players are still firing up the boosters on clunky old rockets @ 1:27 Kenny kicks into warp drive and you begin to understand what Jimi meant : ua-cam.com/video/U5coy1E1PvA/v-deo.html
Utterly superb. What was that? About six choruses with the band, then four more in the break, and not repeating himself on a single one, swinging furiously throughout? Good God, the man could play that ax. What a musician.
SRV and JLV, Saw K Burrell, as a great musician and his few Idols among them This Kenny Burrell was one they Saw a giant Before his knowledge of Jazz and the Blues juge player of Blues and Jazz 🎸🥁🎶
Kenny Burrell and Wes Montgomery were in fact the two best jazz guitarists of all time IMHO. Range, clarity, diversity, improvisation....they were the best of all.
+James D. Mac Isaac Sr. I can certainly appreciate the sentiment, as they are both truly great players, but "best" is word I tend to take issue with. Ok ok lol, you say IMHO, and you are certainly entitled to that. Lenny Breau is one that I think is far too often overlooked. There are so many new innovative guitarists today who are continuing to evolve: Kurt Rosenwinkel, Gilad Hekselman, the list goes on. I just believe in favorites, not bests.
1981. Dad took me to see Kenny Burrell at a San Jose jazz club. I was an 18 y.o. guitar player. I expected the place to be jam packed for a legend like Kenny Burrell. Imagine my shock when only 12 people showed up to see Kenny play that night. But all 12 of us had front row tables and Kenny played superbly.
That's pretty typical. The first time I heard my old guitar teacher play, it was the same thing. And he's a phenomenal guitar player. You know what they say: a rock guitarist plays 3 chords in front of 10,000 people and a jazz guitarist plays 10,000 chords in front of 3 people.
First thought that things were dragging, when compared to the Herb Ellis/Joe Pass version (from "Seven, Come Eleven"), but Mr. Burrell really picks things up around halfway through...
Kenny Burrell is my all time Favorite Jazz Guitar Artist/Player/Composer ... and this is a superb example of why .. thanks for posting .. .allows me to forward link and turn more people onto this great player, hopefully they will do as I have and go find recordings to buy and "wear out".
Might be a good idea to add a link so people can easily purchase this and other of Mr. Burrell's recordings .. .out of respect for this great artist and his lifetime body of work(s) ....
Kenny Burrell is one of the greates of all Time. By listen on many of his albums, I've found and learned the infrastructure of his music. in his way to play.
Sitting in his wheelchair, with Kenny Burrell playing in his earphones, the paralytic is feeling jolts in his limbs. He stands up and throws away his whole contraption.
in sufletul meu .Trăiesc si simt aceasta muzica . Dar nu interesează pe nimeni persoana si sufletul meu . Un moment de slăbiciune . Si cu asta multumesc .
+Geepereet Written by Duke Ellington, of course. An interesting contrast to this performance is the reading by Jimmy Smith and Oliver Nelson on their "Bashin' " album. I love both versions. Thanks for uploading.
The Korean Epiphone Emperor is a great jazz guitar. I didn't care for the pickup, so I replaced it with a Bartolini Johnny Smith floater. Epiphone/Samick quit making the Emperor, but you can find them on ebay for a good price. You might like the stock pickup, but if not you can replace it as I did. The craftsmanship is there in the construction of the guitar. Different amps produce different sounds. I play through a Polytone MIni Brute II which gives me the jazz tone I want. Shop around.
Not sure either, but he probably doesn't have his tone knob all the way down and muted like other jazz guitarists do. It is more of a bluesy guitar tone than the typical jazz guitar muted tone.
Most of a player's tone is in their hands . A combo of right hand attack, string position of the pluck, left hand tension/muting, how he's trained his ear over his lifetime and some other mysterious Juju. If you had Kenny B play a mediocre guitar, he'd still get very good tone. Or, give a mediocre player Kenny's setup -how would you expect it to sound? Not like him. And for equipment, don't forget the strings themselves. Hard to tell from the video but most players in this style use flat-wounds and that will really mellow out the tone.
Roy Massie Good points. Also, I think so many jazz guitarists roll their tone knob either completely off or like down to a 1 or so. However, I think Mr. Burrell doesn't do that with the tone knob, which gives it a much more bluesy tone than that muted jazz tone we're all so accustomed to hearing. I suggest if you have a jazz guitar, simply try not muting the tone knob and see if it's close to his tone. Peace!
Happy 90th birthday to this esteemed gentleman.

I think he took classical lessons too
Love the way he mixes up single note playing and chord melody playing without even stopping to think about it too much. Classy player. A pro's pro...
There are some musicians who can make their instruments speak straight to your heart. Here is one. Magic.
Pat Morley That’s because he’s playing from his heart ! Kenny Burrell❣️
Wish we had more classic footage of Kenny!
Utterly superb. What was that? About six choruses with the band, then four more in the break, and not repeating himself on a single one, swinging furiously throughout? Good God, the man could play that ax. What a musician.
The Gold Standard of Jazz guitar tone!
The bassist is Marcus McLaurine and not Ron Carter.
Che gusto, che musicalità, che comunicativa... Straordinario
this guy is an absolute monster on the guitar!
Love the space in his playing......

Humble but warm and singing swinging father of Jazz guitar

You lucky guy, almost a home concert. A remembrance never to forget I guess.
Professor Polymath
Man, I can't even imagine how great that was. I would have sat there all night and absorbed every note he played.
That's why Chet left the US.

First heard KB in the early to mid 60's in a small jazz club and he remained one of my favorites ever since.
Always groovin', always soulful, and always Kenny! Thanks for posting Geeperet.
those things he did with Jimmy Smith are some of my favorites...'
First thought that things were dragging, when compared to the Herb Ellis/Joe Pass version (from "Seven, Come Eleven"), but Mr. Burrell really picks things up around halfway through...
This is recorded in the Subway in Cologne, Germany.
We met in the mid 60's saw him 6 or 7 times Kenny is my all time favorite.
Unbelievable
Burrell is a Beast
Happy 90th Kenny
Wonderful Guitarist Kenny Burrell!

You know my dad loved Oscar Peterson and I used to think that listening to Oscar Peterson and Joe Pass together was like the dance of the gods :)

El Gran Maestro Kenny Burrell: Perfecto !!!!!
I think Stevie Ray Vaughan did his mojo on Kenny Burrell vibe.
I like this bluesy jazz thing...groovy.
Jimi Hendrix

Nice🎼🎶🎸♥
so cool:)
I didn't know Kevin Spacey was such a great guitarist
Marcus McLaurine is on bass. Not Ron Carter. I tease him often that he looks like Ron’s little brother😀
Someone please tell me the title of this lovely piece .
In a Mellow Tone

Roy Massie Here's a strange one; my brother and nephew have the same tone I do!
Of course it' not Ron Carter on Bass. ( Is it... Joe Henderson's ..younger brother?1) lol..
バレルこそナンバー1。
Who's that on drums? Nice drumming...
That it is the great Sherman Ferguson on drums and such a pleasure to perform with!
@@innerlowbass Thanks for that. The bass is very good too...
That is Sherman Ferguson on drums..
Gespereet has a grudge against the drummer here so doesn't want to let us know who he is.
The drummer is Sherman Ferguson.
i don;t think it's ron carter..maybe larry Gales ?
I love Kenny B... but Dr. RC is a living national treasure... put him on money.
Thats not Ron carter
but of course without drums and bass ...
That's a Super 400, not an L5. My mistake, sorry. The inlay gave it away. The L5 has solid pearl blocks.
