Great to hear you and your family speak the toisan dialect. We speak the Hoiping dialect, but it is very close to the toisan dialect. Just some words are pronounced differently. Hoiping and toisan are both variations of the the "Four Counties" dialect known as "Saiyip". Thanks for viewing my video on China Food Tour.
Thank you for sharing this video. I'm going through some old family records and realize I have roots in Hoiping as well. Plus, there is at least one Seto in my extended family and now trying to remember other Setos who we've had a close connection with over the years in Ontario. Hoping you get to back there soon!
Great to hear you have roots in Hoiping. I hope you get a chance to go there soon. You never know who you are connected to. My mom has discovered different connections just by talking to different people. I try to take the same approach whenever I get a chance to. Thanks for checking out my video. Good luck in your search
Taking the boat from Hong Kong to Kaiping. The days when it was mostly bicycles, glaring clear lightbulbs of the night street stalls, the crowded steamy dim sum restaurant along the road, the kindness of the local citizens, the damn mosquitos, the clinging/gagging smell of the coiled/lit mosquito repellant at night...please, let's go back...memories. Thanks Dan and loved seeing your mother in the first bit of the video.
Was that a direct boat from Hong Kong to Kaiping? I passed by the drop off point in Kaiping when we had dim sum in that area a few years back. My parents and brother visited Kaiping in 1992. I wish I did at that time. I would have loved it, the way you described it. I miss our trips to Kaiping and I can't wait to go back again. My mom and I thank you for viewing our video on travel to Hoiping (Kaiping).
@@DanSetoChineseCanadianRootsTV Yes, there was a direct boat to Kaiping from Hong Kong. I could have gone by a series of buses but I like the refreshing air/water standing at the bow. After being in an airplane for 16+ hours I needed the reinvigorating boat ride. My last boat ride from Kaiping to Hong Kong was when there was a typhoon approaching Hong Kong. The waves were huge, even in the river approaching the mouth to the bay. The old scary flight between the city rooftops to land at Kai Tak airport was always a nail-biter. LOL I think the 3rd vaccine upgrade for the latest variant should be the trick hopefully. Then it will be off to China again for peace, relaxation, and fun. I have a dear friend in Vancouver B.C. who has taught English many many years in China (Kaiping) and is 82 years young, still sharp mentally. He feels trapped in Vancouver. He has French citizenship, Canadian citizenship, and US citizenship. I met him on my first trip to Kaiping. It is really amazing how fast the economic growth and infrastructure in China are progressing. Shenzen was nothing but fields of vegetables and farmers. Now, look at it, growing faster than Silicon Valley. I think it is China's time now to show the world what she can do. So happy to see part of the transformation. Always a pleasure to be at your site. R.
@@roykemp6502 I too remember the almost direct ferry to Sanbu (made two stops) and took about four hours. Best way to go. I started going to Hoiping in 1990. Have been back at least 30 times. I still have relatives in Hoiping. I am Hoisan ren. Last time in 2015, I took the ferry from Hong kong to Zhongshan and then a bus from there to Sanbu Matou. Don't know the situation now, last time I went to Kaiping, I flew into Guangzhou and my relative from Kaiping picked me up. I have eaten at the famous claypot (Bao zai Fan) at least a dozwn time in Chikan. It was closed the last time I was there just like at the end of your video. Also I have stayed at the HK hotel that Dan was waiting for the bus to Kaiping.
Have you been there recently? When I was there 3 years ago, they were shut down to do renovations. I'm sure I will be surprised to see the changes if I go there again. Thanks for viewing my video on Day Trip To Hoiping, China.
Hi Richard, I hope everything is well with you. No, the first part of video was a visit to China a few years ago. The last part of video was in January, 2019. I haven't been out of Vancouver since Pandemic. I haven't seen you since you were on your way to your cruise. Time flies. I'll try and phone you on skype. I just reactivated it not too long ago. Thanks for viewing my video. Take care and stay safe. Dan.
As i recall, it was around 5 hours, which included check off points in Hong Kong and also at Shenzhen, which meant physically getting off the bus and filling in declaration forms. Then transferring from Outer Hoiping Station to city bus to hotel. Thanks for viewing my video on China Food Tour And Day Trip To Hoiping, China.
I have lots of footage that I should have posted before but just getting around to posting now. Thanks for viewing my video on China Food Tour And Day Trip To Hoiping, China. Wishing you all the best in the New Year.
It’s kind of ironic people left China to escape poverty and living on the streets to go to a place like Canada. Then their grand children have to deal with poverty and people living on the streets in Canada.
Thank you. This was great. It was an real eye opener for me. My parents were from Hoiping.
You're very welcome. Great to hear your roots are from Hoiping. Thanks for checking out my video.
Love hearing your mom speak toisan! My family speaks the language

Great Salted eggs and lotus wrap! Thank you for sharing. If these food works for you why not.
We seem to order the rice in lotus leaf a lot when we go for dim sum. Thanks for viewing my video on China Food Tour.

The Chinese character says "dog meat ". I would never eat dog or cat!
I'm not sure what you're referring to in the video. Thanks for viewing my video on China Food Tour.
