@georallen It was kind of funny to be talking to kids in the local Hoiping dialect. When I was growing up in Canada, I hardly ever spoke to any Chinese kids in Chinese. Thanks for having a look at my channel and for your compliment.
Hi Dan,
My grandfather visited China when he was young and that is all I know. He married my grandma in SF, Ca and the Hom family started in a small town calls Inverness, in Marin County in California. Our Dad wanted to take us back to visit our village in Taisan but never made it. I hope one day I will be able to visit Taisan with my older sisters after we found out the name of the village my Great Grandpa was from. So far, watching your videos are very rewarding. Thanks again.
I’m gonna binge watch all of ur videos on your kaiping trips! Thank you for sharing! My parents are both from there☺️☺️
Great to hear your roots are from there. Thanks for checking out my videos.
Thanks for sharing your family history. I hope you do get a chance to visit your Great Grandpa's village in Taisan (Toisan), China. Sometimes the names of villages change but I know in San Fran area there are good resources to help you research. Your support for my videos is greatly appreciated.
I wonder if my dad knows any of your relatives. I wished I had visited this area much earlier. Thanks for checking out my channel.
Great to hear you are a Szeto (Seto) and that we share the same roots. Did you find your family house? if not, I can probably find it for you if you give me a few more details. Thanks for checking out my video on Grandpa's China House.
Toisan is a great place to visit. I like the food and meeting the people there. I hope you will have a great trip there this summer. Are your roots from there?
Thanks for sharing your life history. I like to know about people in other countries. Peace to you and thanks for checking out my video on Grandpa's China House.
Great to hear you had a chance to visit this area. I agree, it is a magnificent place to visit. I'm glad I visited there too.
Great to hear you are from Toisan. Thanks for checking out my video on visiting my grandfather's house in China.
I thought those 2 kids would have spoken a more standard cantonese, due to TV, internet and modern media. But wow, they still have a strong Hoiping accent.
+Jackie Chan I was also very surprised by their speech. This is in a rural part of Hoiping. In the urban centre, the accent is less noticeable. By and large most people in Hoiping do still speak the local dialect. This video was produced a few years ago. At that time, most people were still not influenced by the internet. On my last trip last year, it was incredible to see everyone looking at videos on their cell phones. A few years ago, very few people wear brand name clothes. On my last trip, many brand name stores have popped up. Outside influence is more and more evident due to the internet. Thanks for your comments and thanks for viewing my video on my visit to my Grandfather's Village.
You're very welcome. I'm really happy to share my experiences visiting China. Did your grandfather share with you his experiences of life in China or his life in North America? One thing that I regret is that I never talked to my grandfather about his early life in China or North America.
I had checked out all your kaiping video, it is so amazing to watch these when I keep looking my family house in your video. Thank you for sharing these,
You are very welcome. People there are very down to earth. Thanks for viewing this video.
@danny72044 Going to China and visiting my roots has had a great impact on my life. I will be uploading footage of my visits to my mom's ancestral home in the near future. I think I was more emotional after visiting her village. I will also post my recent trip in November when my brothers and I took our parents there. Thanks for viewing. Your support is greatly appreciated.
Thanks very much. Thanks for checking out my video.
Wow, strange to find a Seto on the internet. My dad was from Hoiping; left when he was very young; don't think he recalled much of his hometown. I still speak the dialect with my siblings but my kids have not picked it up though they liked the sound of it.
Great to hear your roots are from Hoiping. Since posting my videos on UA-cam, it has been really interesting talking to Seto descendants around the World. Also so many different ways to spell the Seto name. Thanks for checking out my video on Grandpa's China House.
Kaiping is a very nice place. My mothers side of the family grew up there, I visited 3-4years ago before starting University, I'm just excited to see other people post footage of this magnificent place online :)
Yes, my background is Hoiping. Thanks for checking out my video on visiting Grandpa's house in China (Hoiping near Toisan).
very interesting footage, I`m an oversea chinese (hoa kiao) myself but have never been in China before. I can imagine the impact on the both of you visiting your relatives for the first time and seeing your grandfather`s house or roots. Thank you for sharing with us ;-)
I speak this language too I was born in China I am very happy to see what China looks like rn ty very much. I really want to go back to my hometowm
What age did you leave China? I'm sure you will find lots of changes. It is changing all the time. Thanks for viewing my video on Scary At Grandpa's China House.
I would love Togo on adventures with you ,you do interesting things and go interesting places
Yes, a lot of interesting places to visit. Also getting lost a lot of the time. Thanks for checking out my video.
Thank you Dan for showing us Taisan villages, my Chinese roots, since none of my family ever been back to Taisan after great Grandpa came to US to build the railroads.

Lady Stardust Great to hear your roots are from Hoiping. I hope you get a chance to visit Hoiping. Thanks foir viewing my video.
Do you like living in UK better or living in Toisan better? Did you find it hard to adjust to living in UK?
I guess they think you can't get lost because they are so familiar with the area. Thanks for viewing my video on my Grandpa's House In China.
Yes, we did find our grandpa's house in China. Thanks for checking out my video.
My grandparents and my father came from this same village. I might have relatives there that know yours. My father left China 90 years ago when he was 16 years of age to find work in Malaysia. He passed away 20 years ago. I'm based in London and hope one day I can take my wife and children to see the house my father lived in as a young boy. Please forward info about your visit so that I can follow and investigate further. Are you on Facebook
+Kheng Leong I will be doing more videos on visits to Hoipoing (Kaiping). A good source for tracing ancestry is the "In Search Of Roots" program based out of San Francisco. They may be able to direct you to sources for research and tracing roots. Thanks for viewing my video on Visit To My Grandfather's Village In Hoiping, China.
Dan, I will be going next summer to Toisan! I have heard my relatives talk about Hoiping but my family is from "Git-on" (I think...) anyways it will be a interesting visit because my grandfather house is still there! And will be looking for it!
Abe Lin Great to hear you will be going to Toisan next summer. Hoiping is not far from Toisan. I took the local bus from Hoiping to Toisan and it was very inexpensive. Thanks for checking out my video. I wish you a safe and happy trip to Toisan.
Wow...so nice to see what it looks like. My parents were from there too. I would like to go back sometime this year.
Sui Chin Nice to hear your roots are from Hoiping. Thanks for checking out my video and I hope you can go for a visit this year.
Have you been to 東湖里. Sorry if you've filmed it in any of your videos... Very new to looking at my ancestry.
I haven't been there. I asked my mom but she never heard of it. Some places have names that are different from what they were before, so that's something to keep in mind. If you know of names of other places nearby, that would help. Thanks for viewing my video on Visit To My Grandgfather's House In Hoiping, China.
good video and journey, you are one of the few who are tracing their roots. Our ancestors that made it to North America sacrificed an entire generation so the next generation could have a better life. My great grandfather saved all his money and sent it back home to sponsor other relatives to come over. We will never know how difficult a life they had.
gordon toronto Thanks for sharing your thoughts. Yes, many sacrifices were made. It is important to remember our roots. Thanks for viewing my video on my Grandpa's House In Hoiping, China.
Yes, i did found it in your video, and it seems like had changed a bit since I didn't go home for a few years.
Lol those 2 boys are so badass, they just tell u the direction and walk away without giving a shit and like as if nothing ever happened
Hey my name is Evan. I'm on my way to Huiyang in Guangdong to find my grandpa's homevillage. I have no idea where to start. Do you have any advice for seeking help from the registries there? He was born in 1923.
I probably can't help you much in finding the registries in Huiyang, Guangdong. If possible, find out the name of the village or area where he lived. Any old letters with the address of where he lived. Write down in Chinese characters any names. Even if you know the name of the village or area, it is quite possible it is known as something else nowadays. Write down your grandfather's name if you know it, so you can show it to people you may run across. Do you speak any Chinese? Huiyang seems like a nice place to visit. If I get a chance, I would like to visit there. Good luck in your search and have a safe journey. Thanks for viewing my video on Visiting My Grandfather's Home.
so many Szeto in San Jose .USA and Alberta .Canada
Although I'm not familiar, there is a lot of relatives connected to San Jose from Alberta.
I am from toisan as well! I am going back next year for summar!!!!!
I wish you a safe journey when you visit your ancestral roots next summer.
^_^ Toisan is a nice place isn't it? Going back there this summer ^_^
This looks exactly like the village where my dad is from!! I wonder if it's the same one lol!
ricebubbles4 Great to hear your roots are from the same area. If you know the name of your dad's village, I could maybe tell you. Thanks for viewing my video on going to my Grandpa's village.
As I walk down the road
I am not afraid of being robbed
As I look for grandfathers house
Poetry at its finest !
Much appreciated.
Yep, I moved out here to the UK a few years ago
Is quit nice to say that I am from toisan
Wow!!!!!! What an amazing video!! I cannot go to China ( due to low money funds 😿) but at least I can see the real China 🇨🇳 on UA-cam thank you for wonderful video
Great to hear you enjoyed my video on Scary At Grandfather's Village. Thanks for checking out my video.
Hoi Ping is my hometown too but I was born from Dichoi area of guangdong.
I just see your comment now. Where is Dichoi in Guangdong? Thanks for viewing my video on Scary At Grandpa's China House in Kaiping, China.
@@DanSetoChineseCanadianRootsTV I don’t remember. I came to US long time ago with my parents. Just look it up in a map!
my wife is Judith Szeto Yuen Ting in San Jose CA USA now
Any Seto/ Szeto out there recognize her name?
@@DanSetoChineseCanadianRootsTV thank u very very much indeed for let everyone to know my msg
My great grand father picture in my profile is Soo Hoo Chouk ( Aka Soo Hoo Joke) His Name would be soo Hoo Moon Juck? His brother Soo Hoo Moon Yuen came to USA in 1893. the other brothers Soo Moon, Oh, Soo Hoo Moon Ock & soo Hoo moon Woon are sons of Soo Hoo Yee Hoy. Could these men be relatives of yours? I am overwhelmed by your video in emotion! I am seeking my generational name & my sons too. generation from 20th to 22nd ( including my dad's) THANK You!!!
Lainie Johns Great to hear your roots are from the same clan. Most likely your relatives are from the same region and are from one of the Seto/Soo Hoo villages. There are quite a few of these Seto/Soo Hoo villages clustered together. It's possible that the land that I walked on in this video, your relatives had walked on in previous generations. I would have to know the name of your ancestors' village to see if we are directly related. Thanks for checking out my video and good luck in your search for your roots.
You are brave! I am from rural area in China, similar to your grandfather's village. They are scared of strangers because the security is bad almost everywhere in China. They have to go to cities to make money to support their families, only older people and kids stay there. You don't want to visit China before Chinese new year, the robbers need money for the new year, the chance of being robbed is much greater compared to other time of the year.
+Yanhong Guan Thank you very much for your advice. I have also been warned not to wander around at night time. Your last name is Guan. Are you from the Chiak Hom (Chikan) area in Hoiping? Thanks for your comments and thanks for checking out my video on my Grandfather's village.
+Dan Seto (Chinese Canadian Roots TV) Your mom's wonton recipe brought me to your channel. I am Hakka(客家), not very far from Toisan, 350 miles. I was one of those that work in the big cities to support my family before I came to the U.S. through K1 visa in 2008. China is a great place for travelers, the food is much cheaper compared to the American living standard. When it gets dark in China, you need to stay in your room.
Yanhong Guan Thanks for sharing your personal history. It seems you are a hard working person who has sacrificed a lot for your family. Thanks for sharing your thoughts.
Serdenipity
The dialect on point !
The people in this rural speak the dialect just like the way I remember when I was young. Even in the urban area a few miles from there, the dialect has Mandarin blended into the vocabulary. Thanks for checking out my video. Wishing you a Merry Christmas and all the best in the New Year.
can u find your grandpa,s house finally?
Hoiping dialect is very similar to the Hoisan dialect. Maybe 90% overlap, don't you think so?
I can't really say what percentage, but the two dialects are mostly the same, except for pronunciation of some words. Thanks for checking out my video on my visit to my grandfather's house in china.
That looks like the village my grandpa lives in
Wayne Tan Great to hear that your roots are from the same area. Thanks for viewing my video on Grandpa's House In Hoiping, China.
this is cool, seto clan represent!
So basically I am from the same village
oh you're from hoiping -.-
