So I wanted to point out one quick thing about parallel compression : the same can be achieved by using a stereo compression with a parallel knob and place it at the end of your vocal chain as usual. May I recommend Soft tubes CL1b MkII. Its the blue stereo compressor you see in literally every studio - specifically for rap. And it is amazing ... so is the plug in version.

Try turning off the direct signal in the doubler plug-in so you just get the effect from the doubles (left and right signals). Great vid! Keep up the good work! Also, it sounds like Drake's retune speed is a tab bit faster in comparison to yours.

something that i just understood from schooll these days is that cutting frequencies using the Notch Filter to find the frequency its not just finding something u dont like, but even you the frequency u got rid of is the right one, cause the way u find the frequencies that u need to cut with the notch filter are the ones that create a constant whistle while the signal is playing

Glad you're trying to help aspiring engineers and mixers! A little advice from someone who's learned personally from the top engineers and who pays all his bills through mixing: I think you may be using too many inserts homie, it sounds a lot dirtier than Drake's ultra clean sounding vocals. Less is more. All the top engineers barely use any inserts in their chain (including Drake's mixer); just because Pro Tools lets you have up to ten inserts per track does not mean you should. Your mic and pre amps are one of the (if not the) most important part to achieving clean crisp "Drake" vocals. On top of that bro, I don't know if you simply use headphones for the video, but if you're mixing on headphones you will never reach your full potential. The most important ingredients for a good mix are good monitors and room treatment. This is why the top studios spend tens and even hundreds of thousands dollars on speakers and room treatment. I see you're smart and have talent, you'll go far bro. Investing in yourself is key, always remember you have to spend money to make money. I wish you all the best.

Yea he might of went 2 Eq's and 1 compressor over in this process. Seemed more like compensating for overcompensation a few times when he could've instead just went back and undid some eq'ing... For instance when he cut 1.5 to get rid of some presence and then 2 Eq's later he cut the same frequency lol But other than that, overall he has a good ear and good techniques

Sebastian Guirola yea understand this I make videos for people that mix in their bedrooms with little to no analog gear etc . I personally have heard that drake records with a C800 and a neve 1073 which is WAYYYY OUT of the price range of a lot of folks watching this video. So what I do to get my end result honestly doesn’t matter and I state clearly in this video that it is not the same but close as possible for me so I don’t think it’s wrong especially in our business engineers of the 80s would look at us like we’re Nuts but this is a different time. I say learn from me what u can not emulate ya know. Take what u can from it and apply it to your own ideology

      YES!!!
Everything is so reliant on plugins and that IN YOUR FACE sound. Back in the day it took people actually perfecting their music. I mix using the old-style that most rock engineers use today, modern hip hop and pop have ruined mixing in a sense.

    • @MrAnuragindia
      @MrAnuragindia 4 роки тому

@@AriJordan there's nothing wrong in using plugins, but there needs to be a limit to what you put in.... I see mixing engineers using 15-20 plugins on one vocal track... That's killing creativity and talent of the artist. Rather make instrumentals only why bother to call a vocalist to perform.

Listen you gotta stop being mad at modern day things. Instead of complaining about it why don’t you create an innovate the next sound of mixes. Cause realize it’s about what the consumer will like

Hi Devon really love your tutorials, thank you so much for these videos. Your music sounds really amazing and your voice too, I would love to see a tutorial on how you did the background vocals (choir) on this track as they sound amazing! Much love :)

Bro there are some points which you might have forgot 1) how many aux are you using in main vocals
    2) why you put stereo compressor not mono.
    3) If slots are not there how to expand should we sidechain or simple link it
    4) So many plugins are they really important?
    5) compressor input level how to set according to track
    6) compressor output level according to track
    7) There are many times where autotune discorrects correct lines how to fix those if we want autotune all over our vocals.

Hey Devvon! Been watching for a little while love your tutorials, they are so informational and low on bs which is so rare for this industry. You're a super good teacher and you come across very humble when you speak.
I was curious are you ever going to do anything on rap vocals?
Edit: nvm found your pro tools one, thanks :)
