What if in replacing with a taller stut 2.5 inches? It looks like this barely squeezed out.
I will say you show the most efficient way of replacing these struts. I see other UA-cam videos that loosen or take apart the ball joints and the control arm. A waste of time. I did mine today with your tips and it was a smooth strut replacement. Also you give the torque specs which saves me some more time by not having to look them up.
I will never go anywhere else for DIY videos for my 4Runner. This was perfect!
• 14mm deep -sway bar link (52lbs torque)
• 12mm socket-skid plate
• 21 mm deep- tie rod (67 lbs torque)
• 15mm closed end wratchet wrench top of shocks (47lbs torque)
• locking wrenck pliers -hold tie rod
• 19 mm wrench+ 19mm socket- bottom of shock (100lbs torque)
• hammer- loosen tie rod (dont hit thread side)
• punch - push out bolts
• long pry bar/cheater bar- push down lower control arm to push out shock loose
awesome video sizes and torques, I hate searching for tools. Biggest life lesson learned when I went to school for surgical technology surgeons hate waiting on tools so I always make tool kits for the jobs, would have loved to learn this when I fixed tanks in the army.
+Tony Espino Thanks for checking us out. Also, thank you for your service!

What if my strut is 2.5 taller ? Will I have to loosen something. It looked like it was tight just replacing when you are prying with the bar.

@@TRQ question
Best repair video I've seen. Very clear, and you don't waste the viewer's time! Subscribed.
+eric rosolack Thanks for watching and subscribing!
Really informative. I managed to do my struts within 3 hours. The OEMs have been on there for almost 200k miles and the bolts were a pain to remove.
+iChronic Thanks for watching our video! 1aau.to/m/Shop-TRQ
I just finished replacing my struts. The tops were fused, and I had to beat them loose. Thanks for the tutorial and the torque values!
Great video for all DIY out there, just don't expect this job to be as quick and easy...
+1 ...my thoughts exactly. Complements on this video for being instructive for diy, but watch carefully. It won't just fallout/drop in. Be patient. He's a professional and had to goose it, pry, and persuade. It will likely take you longer.
Excellent video. The camera work is phenomenal. Great job!!
You make it look so easy, lol. I do this and it takes me like 2 hours. Thanks for the video!
Great vid man!! Looking to change shocks on my 08 4Runner. Thanks!🙏🏼
This is an incredible video!! Exactly what I needed! Thank you so much
Great video I just finished replacing mine. Thanks!
One of the very best repair videos I have EVER seen BY FAR ! Huge Kudos to you and the outstanding work of editing and camera work by that Cameraman ! Great job guys ! Can't wait to watch more of your videos !
You are an absolute Angel for this video. Thank you! 🙏🏽❤️
Made my life so much easier.

Thanks much for Amazing well informed videos with torque, wrench specs and more. Amazingly in-depth video of Do's and Don't. You guys have the best videos for me to replace my brake and discs. I like to know if it's necessary to replace the rear disc rotor. I hear 70% usage of brakes are from the front so changing pads and rotors. Do rear rotors ever get warped!. I will be buying oem parts. Thank you for any feedback before i start my project. Any feedback on ceramic vs. metallic (oem) AND rotors slotted vs. cross drilled vs. regular (oem).
This works for a 2010 4runner 4x4, there are a couple cross members behind the skid pan that need to come off, then the sway bar.
I struggled for 3 hours during the disassembly, only to find the KYB stut plus will not fit due to a incorrect bushing insert.
Part on it's way back to rock auto for a 2nd try. Outer tie rod very difficult to remove, even with a mallet. I used a spare 3/4 drive extension and hit the top of the nut/bolt many times before it finally broke free. Some thread damage, but was able to turn back and forth to clean up the threads on reassembly. I'll be back at it in a couple of weeks with i hope correct strut.
Used a 6ft 2x4 as a lever placed the end on top of a tool chest to hold the upper and lowe control arms down, you will also need to turn the now free rotor assembly away from the lower bushing to allow just enough room for the shock to fall out into your hands.
Otherwise a great video- thank you very much
Stabilizer bar mount bolts looked ok , but I soaked the threads inside the frame with oil anyway. They broke loose but bound up after a turn or so. I could feel the bolts were near snapping so I carefully worked them back and forth over that one turn. They didn't loosen any further. Tightened them back and gave up.
The 3 upper nuts per strut are 14mm on the 4th gen with X-REAS
My SR5 doesn’t have xreas, and they’re also 14mm
Best way to do it. Very informative.
A thing of beauty.
After seeing this install - Im ready to do this myself. going with the Rancho shocks 2" lift
Quick tip, careful removing and inserting the lower bolt on your strut. With all that pressure, mine both had several threads smushed. I had to use a skinny file to clean it up (didn't have a die that big). Keep the pry bar (or a helpers foot) to hold the lower control arm down so that inserting the bolt is capable by hand.
Just drop the lower control
This video alone made me subscribe. Excellent work and video.
+Sunset Rider Thanks for watching our video! 1aau.to/m/Shop-TRQ
Video makes it look easy, lol. I am still working on it but the video is really helpful. Taking my time hopefully get don't soon. I am not a mechanic but I do want to learn stuff. Thank you for sharing how to and the tips and tricks!!! Stay safe
Did you finish it?
OEM top strut bolts are 14mm,most Asian vehicles use 10,12,14,17 19,21 mm
If you're replacing the lower control arm at the same time do you need to remove the sway bar and separate the tie rod from the knuckle?
You can use a prybar to push the bottom of the strut into place instead of using the bolt since I've ruined a few bolt threads doing just this in the past.
What if your lower control arm doesn’t budge when prying to be able to get the strut lit
Thank you! Very straight forward. Like all your vids
+runningbean Thanks for watching. Buy the part in this video on 1AAuto.com: 1aau.to/m/Shop-TRQ
Hi, do I need to do a wheel alignment after this job is done?
Hey! I watch your videos and would like you to work on my 08’ 4Runner or recommend to a shop that can replace my XREAS shock system.
He definetly kicks ass*
Now that's how a tutorial is done point blank
+jdizzilicious Thanks for watching our video! 1aau.to/m/Shop-TRQ
With manufacture torque specs!!
Do these struts lower the right height?
..."awesome".
Would you that’s about one hr of labor for each side per a mechanic shop?
If I want to eliminate the x-reas shock absorber system, do you think those same ones that you installed work for me? I have a 2004 4runner
So awesome. Thanks man.
+Gantry Crane Thanks for watching our video! 1aau.to/m/Shop-TRQ
Great video unless you have a Xreas system like almost all 4runners. Would love to see that video
There are a couple good videos on how to remove the Xreas system (fairly simple) on youtube. Installing regular shocks and struts is your best option. The Xreas system is a fortune to fix and there are much better suspension options to go with.
@MikeD D Absolutely. In fact you will find most owners of a 4Runner encourage it. The Xreas system in it's time was decent but there are better and cheaper options for shocks and struts. Bilstein makes top notch items for a 4Runner and so does KYB. Bilstein has the upper hand but KYB is also good and a little cheaper option.
I purchased your top strut mount and there are no videos. I building a strut with Bilstein 5100 shocks and Moog springs and a1 auto top mount. Is there supposed to be ( working bottom to top ) the Bilstein shock- the boot it came with- then a washer-a rubber bushing-a1 shock mount- the truck frame- a rubber bushing- a washer - the top nut? The Bilstein don’t come with bushings or washers for the front? Are they supposed to be there or is the washer-bushing- bushing-washer incorporated into the A1 top mount or am I supposed to be taking the old ones off the original and reusing…. I really wanted to pre build these then just toss the old ones. Thank
Do you need to completely take off the sway bar or can you replace the struts with it just disconnected from the sway bar end links?
I was gonna say the same..I don't wanna take it off 😂
lol anybody figure this out? I don’t see why you need to take the whole thing off haha
@TRQ great video. Can you please provide the torque specs for the four 14mm bolts that connect to the sway bar brackets? I can't seem to find them anywhere. Thanks!
I have a question for TRQ. In the Toyota service manual for my 2003 4R on the front suspension components page there is a notation next to the front stabilizer link assy which says "non-reusable part". Why is this part non reusable? I see the one you are taking off looks new, do you have to replace this every time you need remove the swaybar. Interesting that remove the tie-rod end, in the service manual it doesn't mention having to remove it to remove the strut, but looking closer at your video I'm not sure how you'd get the bottom of the strut out without doing that.
when buying new strut and springs, they already come together? i didn't see you remove and install that part.
+kracksmith4ejm1 For many vehicles, we have the complete strut and spring assembly available. It is preassembled with the spring, strut and mount. Thanks for checking us out!
Will this work on a 3rd gen?
No antiseize anywhere?
Can this kit be used for a 2004 Toyota 4Runner Limited edition ( with XRes ) I wanna delete the Xres but on your kit it says it can’t be used Xres vehicles
@TRQ If I have lifted suspension (2.5"), will I need to remove the lower ball joint or will the pry bar method still work and give me enough room to take out/put in strut?
Ive heard you can still pry it, but you'll need a lot, a LOT,, of leverage. I couldn't push enough to get my 2" lift on
Is this for the 08 4Runner 5gen
Great video, subscribed! Btw, what size are those rotors; 319mm or 338mm? I have a 2007 4Runner 6 cyl and want to do a brake job soon. Tire size is 265/65/R17 112T. Thank you!
Rotors are either 12.6 inch or 13.3. You can check by using a tape measure to measure diameter.
What type of strut assembly did you install?
Wow!
Is the work the Same for a 2011 4 Runner, 2 wheel drive? And, do you need to do a Front End Alignment with the method you used?
It's the same, should not need an alignment as noting that affects the alignment was removed. I have a 2WD 2011 4Runner SR5.
lfcjr9 Thank You for Advise- as Long as I do Not break Cam/caster nuts, (my 4 runner is sr- 5 also), sounds like I will Be Ok. Watched a Shock replacement on 2009 2- wheel drives (via UA-cam), And, it was required to align because they could Not get the “free play” (needed to Remove Old Shocks), without Breaking Loose Nuts for alignment on each side. Did you replace Both Shocks @ Same Time- Toyota recommends to Replace Both at same time- they claim tire wear will not be Equal if you Replace 1 Side Only? Thank You
@@davidmazzotti4526 Correct, as long as you do not touch the cam bolts you will be good. I would replace both at the same time, I do believe that the newer shock will behave quite different from the old one, tire wear and ride might be uneven. Good luck!
No bonking required?
Did everything but the struts are stuck. What can I do?
did you end up hitting it with pb blaster or a torch?
It thought you have to torque them when the truck is down.
What is he prying against at the top of the strut, mine is stuck and I can't get it to drop out
I used a torch to heat it up and it work, just becareful on where your flames are pointed at. Good luck!!?
@@jaydeguzman764 thanks, I got it out with a large flat head and a hammer, found the technique on another 1A video of a Tacoma strut replacement
Is this really as easy as it looks?
Does it take only 11 mins?
9 if you're quick.
We have an 06 4 runner. Liked it but never seen something made w such crap steel. Everything is rusted beyond belief making a simple job like this take 10 times as long. Like my other friends w Toyota’s. The frame is the weak link.
