Messi had 9 Goals in ucl that calendar year and Ribery 3 goals in that ucl calendar year
if messi deserved it in 2017 and 2018 then ronaldo desrved 2011 and 2015 because he won the golden boot in 2010/11 and 2014/15 , he won a couple trophies won ucl golden boot with messi 2014/15 and won many more , in 2011 ronaldo won the copa del rey beating barcelona , finished as highest goalscorer along side in 2015 aswell.

@sonyangoat The reason behind changing the day fro voting is because during the beginning voting season, the votes weren't enough to make a decision so Fifa decided to extend the date so that a lot of votes can come by, if Ronaldo robbed it then how come Messi was 2nd??? The reason why Ronaldo won is becuz he preformed in a team where nobody else preformed and at some moments was mind blow in and on top of that 69 goals and 15 assists in only 59 games
For me, Messi was heads and shoulders above everyone for at least 3/4 of 2013....Ronaldo being the best individually was more of recency bias such that they had to extend the deadline as a professional way of saying......we've changed our pick to Ronaldo. Collectively it should have been Ribery and individually Messi did more for much of the year esp the period for voting to be ahead of Ronaldo. So it was a good steal for me.

If you read my point......the award should be on individual basis imo and not collectively. But we know they change their criteria a lot.. So I'm saying that I'm not one of those who just do revisionism and see how many goals Ronaldo scored throughout the year. By August of that year, Messi was clear of Ronaldo in every sense....performances, trophies, even goals. It was about September but especially october novembet that Ronaldo started covering more ground. So if not Messi's injury, he definitely would've won. But that not withstanding, if it's a fair thing, it shouldn't matter whether or not Messi was injured so long as he did enough to best what Ronaldo did until November the deadline which imo he did. So again I say, individually it should've been Messi (but Ronaldo wasn't far behind at all in the end) and collectively it should've been Ribery.
In 2010, Messi was heads and shoulders above every player individually but collectively behind the likes of sneider, iniesta etc.
In 2021, only Lewandowski sympathy and lack of knowledge made people think messi wasn't deserving because based on the time frame for the award, as usual Messi had the best case individually.
As for 2023, the most deserving imo was Rodri, but between Messi and Haaland, then Messi all day..
People should stop using sympathy to award or discredit people unjustly. Haaland and Lewy only scored more goals for eg.....they neither played better nor made more difference to their teams than Messi did.

it seems to me that the golden balls, when they were given out together with the FIFA and the golden balls before / after them, are a little different, with the FIFA they were more focused, it seems to me, more on individuality, not trophies

I prioritize individual stats over team stats personally which is why messi has also won the most ballon'dors and it isn't that close. Ronaldo 1000% deserved 2013 ballondor without question. messi should have 7 ballondors, as haaland deserved to win it objectively. (I am a staunch messi supporter btw, he is the best of all time easily)

Though in messi defence his Barcelona side post 2016 in the ucl wasnt great so Messi had to drop deep and create chances, while cr7 could just focus complety on scoring clutch goals because madrid in the champion league are just different

Ronaldo in 2015/16 CL scored 11 goals in group stage just vs Malmo and Shakhtar. Scored 0 goals in SF and final. Got injured in Euro final with 0 contribution and scored 2 goals vs the mighty Wales in SF. Didn't win the league or Copa. Griezmann dominated Euro and CL campaign. Clear robbery.

Important thing is that Griezmann lost both finals to Ronaldo and if you look at the overall stats for 2016 calendar year, Ronaldo was more impressive.
