I’m a Gen Z kid and I really only knew about Nasty, Rhythm Nation and (funnily enough) Feedback growing up and it wasn’t until I started really getting into music that I discovered Janet’s hits. It’s so crazy how little younger generations know about Janet considering she’s one of the most successful and influential artists of all time… We really need to start a movement on social media to restore her legacy because her discography (and videography) is way too damn excellent to be forgotten.

Same, I knew only What Have You Done For Me Lately, Rhythm Nation, and eventually Nasty through MTV classic. It’s not until I started getting into her music where I really understand how bas the aftermath of her getting blacklisted really was because how did I not know a hit as big as That’s The Way Love Goes until getting into her music

See, you can't kill Janet's legacy. Eventhough Damita Jo and the era's after that didn't produced any hits, it still sold 3 million WW, something ppl would die for 2day. On her next project, 2OY.O, Call on Me was #1 for several weeks on on the R&B charts and #25 on Hot 100 based on her name. On Discipline, Feedback reached all the way to #19 and the album went to #1, all while blacklisted. Unbreakable also went to #1, her 7th #1 album. She can still sell out arenas and stadiums. It's funny how things come full circle because today in 2021, she's beloved and favored more than anytime in her career. Her legacy is still intacted, she's in the R&RHOF and it's no question she's still Pop Royalty.

@@TINKERB121 maybe so, but her music and videos were still being blocked by the industry from airplay. Probably 10 years after the blacklisting, you were starting to see more of her old videos on UA-cam. Her artistry and contribution was blocked for several years, meaning not given credit for her decades of craftsmanship. A lot of young people (teens) didn't know how big she really was and the impact and influences she has on other artists (and yes, gasp, including Beyonce) until about 3 years ago. The 2008 promotion of her album on MTV did nothing for the backlash or what the industry has done to her.

great video. I'm older so, I was there at the start of Janet's career. I remember when "what have you done for me lately" video dropped. I remember in school folks arguing who was better janet or whitney, because whitney came out around the same time. it's so funny now to think about. amazing artist. she worked hard for hers. as far as the Superbowl, I really think it was white mainstream media trying to take opportunity to knock out two birds with one stone. as around that time, that's when they were going after her brother. Janet was the one who always provided the more "normal" face of the Jacksons, compared to her brother...so this "controversy" was what they need to show how "strange" the Jacksons were. glad she didn't let it hold her back.

Loved this in-depth analysis. IMO DamitaJo is right up there with the best of Janet’s catalogue and the whole blacklisting thing just shows how unfairly Janet was treated with respect to other artists. Indeed, this may be an early example of someone being ‘cancelled’ though by twisted execs and not by the public and fans who generally continued to adore her. I wish the Janfam could do a ‘justice for DamitaJo’ and get the album to #1 on iTunes or something

This is my take. I am 48 years old and I have been aware of Janet Jackson since the late '70s when I saw her as Penny on good times. I always liked her acting and still to this day prefer it and wish she would do more. I think her damita Joe album and the one that came after that weren't successful not just because the production was old and we've heard it all before for almost 25 years but because I don't think she's interested in being a singer artistically at least anymore. I think as she gets older she should venture more into acting again and writing. She's a wonderful writer. I have seen her on tour and I even saw her 2 years ago and even if I say that I don't think she prefers to make albums anymore she certainly loves to perform the songs.
My most played album...the velvet rope. That is ART..that was HER most vulnerable album....I also appreciate the fact that she delved into shades of mental illness on it.

...NO, no, no-no-no...It was BEENIE MAN, who did that; Janet's label wanted to add "Feel It Boy" to the re-issue of her "All For You" album (the one where she's wearing the USA bikini top)...He went on STAGE at one of his shows, and ranted...making Janet give a call to her label, and properly 'distanced' herself from Beenie, claiming she 'didn't know' of his stances..... It was racially screwed, hands down. Honestly, it definitely would've been in the same ballpark as All For You if not better. It's better than AFY imo. Island Life/Just a Little While/Truly are my top 3. Pretty much almost every song could've been a good single as far as how 2004 was sounding.

The higher-ups are still pissed at her....... can we just take a moment to recognize the power of a black woman. Only a black woman's nipple could cause this much chaos and controversy. It's always something about us...our hair, curvy bodies, lips etc etc. The second half of the video angered me so and then it just made me so proud to be a black woman! With 1 breast( my lord not even a pair) we can shut the world down, spark UA-cam, make America take time to reconsider what's deemed appropriate and inappropriate for children because they sure didn't seem to give a damn before! Yasss Janet, the Queen, Living Legend ❣❣❣❣💪💪 Amazing job Calvin, I mean at this point why are we even watching TV when the internet is giving such quality journalism👏👏👏👏💯 BTW is it just me or is it something about Diane Sawyers's approach in her interviews that just makes your ass itch?🤔 She's had a history of coming for women in a way that I just don't appreciate from Whitney to Mariah to Brittany to Janet. It was a risky decision to do it in the first place however he totally f*cked up by pulling the attachment off of her costume a second too soon. We were definitely supposed to be left with the illusion that he pulled it off, not actually seeing him pull it off.

Janet was originally supposed to have her skirt ripped off with just Justin stepping on the tail but because it just looked awkward. Janet and the designer came up with the idea I think two days before and called Justin telling him what their idea was.
The reason why they called Justin was because he wanted to get back a Britney spears because of her kiss with Madonna at the VMAs and Janet did consider him a friend 😒(even though she should've known better because he ain't nothing but off-pitch falsetto frat boy). But I digress🙄

@@jeremiahborders2959 Lol no. The stylist is lying. First off, USAToday already exposed that stylist some years ago as he was seen buying Janet the nipple jewelry she wore on stage from Byriah Dailey the weekend before the Superbowl. (I would recommend reading the USAToday "What really happened?" article, its the most in depth explanation of the incident). The stylist is just trying to sell a book and was using the attention the Hulu Britney documentary was getting for press to find a publisher.
Janet has never claimed the idea was anybody's but her own. Justin was on tour in Europe and didn't arrive in Houston until the very day of the Superbowl. The idea that he was seeking vengeance over a Britney/Madonna performance (that was already old news by than) is ridiculous. The performance is inspired by Tina Turner and Mick Jagger's Live Aid performance right down to the clothes. Secondly, Justin and Janet had been friends since NSYNC opened up for The Velvet Rope tour in 1998 and were rumored to have dated briefly in 2002, that's why she's on his album Justified ("And She Said Take Me Now") and why she invited him to be her surprise guest in the first place. I was raised by Janet Jackson. I was born in 82 and as a small kid I had a red mickey mouse tape recorder and headphones that I would use to listen to cassette tapes all the time. I would go through my older sister's cassette collections (there is an 8 year difference between us so she had a lot of popular albums on cassette) and just listen to whatever. When I was five I discovered Control on cassette and my mom said I would play it all the time and my sister would get annoyed because it was always missing from her room. My mom ended up buying a copy for me. When 1814 came out I listened to that tape over and over again. My mom was an artist and use to make art as a welder and she even made an 1814 hat for me with the sign made out of metal. For my 8th birthday my mom took me to see her live during her first tour in 1990. I had a blast and I remember so many people saying how much they loved my 1814 hat and so many asking where I got it because they wanted one. I've always been a fan of hers to this day. I hate what happened to her in 2004 and how badly she was treated and took all the blame. I will never forgive what this country and entertainment industry did to her.
