  • Explaining some of the Pros & Cons of using Gloves, Fingerless Gloves and Bare Hands as a Futsal Goalkeeper.
    This ultimately is a personal choice and what's best ultimately boils down to what you feel comfortable playing in. I've tried to be objective in explaining the key points but it is opinion based and therefore I'd love to hear yours in the comments below...
    What do you prefer and why?

    Here's my theory on gloves:
    The main purpose of gloves is to enhance grip. On 11-a side the ball is bigger, and having gloves is a must if you want to grip the ball efficiently. However, in futsal the ball is much smaller, and you can grip it even without gloves. Sure, wearing gloves would make it easier, but your hands and fingers aren't as agile. This can have a major impact on how fast / precise you are able to throw the ball into play, for example in a possible counter attack. And this is much more important in futsal than it is on 11-a side.
    I personally can't throw the ball with the same speed and precision with gloves as i can without. Thats why i chose not to use them. In today's match it cost me two sprained fingers (mainly because i tried a more flexible tape than usual), but I had some damn good throws tho ;)
    Anyhow thanks David once again for sharing! I would really like to watch a video from one of your training sessions!

    Bare hands is good but the most problem I've had with this is confindence, because you're worried about get injured and this makes you play worse.
    But with the time you improve and maybe I'll buy a finger less glovds

      PantsTheThird my fingers never got injured playing futsal and football either. The one thing that I did tho is that me and the lads ALWAYS play barefooted so my toes get hurt pretty often but there is only one time when I actually DID have my toe injured. It was from blocking a shot during futsal and I kind of slipped, making the index toe of my left foot stubbed. Well damn, that toe needed 3 weeks of recovery, straightening it with some support
      Well, either way I don’t take any injuries with my fingers when playing football or futsal, and I’d like to try fingerless gloves for once IF I can find a set of those

    Hey guys. Foreigner opinion time! I'm from Brazil, and I believe brazilian players often prefer a very artistict and less objective style of play, which accentuates the need for an efficient and concentrated goalie, specially when it comes to giving the ball to your teammate, this is why I prefer playing barehanded. So I can create plays from the very back. Be it with my feet or my hands. If you ever get a chance to play with a brazilian keeper, or at least then ones I know, to be really keen on making risky passes and of course, play bare handed.

    I've been using the fingerless for the past 1.5 yr. Since I hadn't goalkept before, the transition to me was faster. One of the opposite goalies uses the full gloves... but I think is because they had played for 11-player games. Preference for sure is key as pointed out. I will continue with the fingerless path. Thank you David!

    • @DavidHaynesGK
      @DavidHaynesGK  7 років тому

      Yeah! You're exactly right - I think a lot of 11-a-side keepers that come into Futsal are very used to gloves and will continue using them. Preference is the key. I personally use full gloves, but I'm working on changing that to fingerless.
      You're welcome, thank you for taking the time to watch.

    Personally playing at State level in Aus i feel bare hands is by far superior. Shot blocking is important for keepers, but in Futsal it's not EVERYTHING. Distribution is VERY important for a goal keeper, especially at higher levels, and having impaired distribution cuts down on your effectiveness as a keeper. Similarly, keepers should be working on their foot skills, and be at least capable enough that the players you are playing with are more then comfortable using you when needed, and not simply so you can boot the ball up the field, but actually make a play when you receive the ball.
    Futsal keeping is quite different from many forms of goal keeping because of this fact. Therefore, distribution needs to be considered higher on the list of skills for a futsal goalkeeper. Thus, bare hands (whilst POSSIBLY being slightly worse at shot blocking - although i'd disagree) is a superior option then wearing gloves in Futsal. IMO.

    Thank you so much for these videos, very helpful, I would like to know your opinion on a wrist injury I recently sustained in a five aside game, I stretched my left arm to try to block a very hard shot coming to my left, I did block the ball but my wrist went back (hyper-extended) which caused me a scaphoid fracture... I was wearing gloves, and we were playing with a slightly over-inflated size 5 ball!
    I'm wondering why this happened!? was it my hand position? was it a weak wrist?? was it bad quality gloves (puma gloves) ??
    what do you think?? and thanks in advance.

  • @romiarkan450

    The best answer for me, after all these years, are Gaelic gloves. They're full finger gloves with latex palms that fit snugly and aren't as chunky as even the tightest of goalkeeper gloves, therefore giving you better feel for handling and throwing the ball. They're also not as expensive. Top of the line O'neills only cost 20 euros, around the same price as fingerless futsal gloves.
    If the ones made by Penalty are hard to find, I suggest giving Gaelic gloves a try.

    Find that gloves are better for me as I have confidence to receive hard shots or deflect them away without that much fear of injury and it helps cushion shots so I can save them better too. Fingerless or those thin gloves gave me sprained fingers at times.

    I play both 11 and futsal. For last 2 months I olayed only 11 and now is very dificult to change to futsal, positioning, movment, ractions, parades, but hardest is to get used to bare hands even tho I used always keep without gloves on futsal. But my palms ar much softer and more sensitove to contact with fast balls, but I decidet to take some time to adopt and them will bi good. Becouse i think that ball distribution in futsal is imaportant as much as savings. So is better not to reduce feel on ball due protection of finger, and there is tapes that can protect enough to safe you from injuries.

    I used my bare hand last Monday and the ball hit the right side of my right hand where the little finger is situated so now I have a muscle pain in my forearm. I used to do mma or u can say for a hobbie actually, I used to play. So I wore fingerless gloves for quite a bit but I never thought of using them in futsal. Now I want to buy full protected gloves as my forehand has got a little bit of pain left in it or should I use those fingerless gloves. I know this sounds a bit odd but still I want to know cause I lack agility so I don't want something to ruin my speed further and I also don't want to get injuired. So what should I do in this case. I have not used full hand gloves before. Sorry for the long comment.

    • @DavidHaynesGK
      @DavidHaynesGK  7 років тому

      Hey ya,
      That's a tricky one to be honest, I personally value protection really highly (especially as I play all the time) so I tend to wear gloves to look after my hands. And in all honesty I get on fine with them, I don't think they're heavy or affect my movement in anyway and I also get the benefit of increased grip.
      I would maybe try and wear full gloves until that hand is better, and also make sure you rest it up well to allow it to heal. You also may grow to prefer it. Then once recovered have a little play and experiment with both gloves/no gloves and fingerless to see what you prefer when fully fit! :) Best of luck and safe hands! :)

      David Haynes well I am very much thankful that you are giving us your precious time, replying our comments and motivating us. Today I had a practice match where I wore full hand gloves and I got that spark, that confidence I always wanted and as futsal balls are slightly smaller I felt like I was having a slight advantage than my opponent gk on throwing the ball, gripping and accuracy. The pain is gone. So I am looking forward to buy fingerless for next match. Thank you once again for the hard work. Best wishes from Bangladesh.

    If u want to use full gloves, i would recommend using standard training gloves for football/soccer GK, not the matchplay type. Sometimes these kind of gloves are thinner at the palm and they do give u more feel of the ball, thus improving distribution. They are quite cheaper too.
    Currently i use the fingerless type to get some feel of it, and i do feel some significant difference. For me, i'd prefer to go for full gloves type. I HATE to hv my fingers injured!

      I'm no doctor and I wouldn't know the best advice frankly, but I'd perhaps go with fingersave - look after yourself and those fingers. Try out tape as well for that extra little bit of protection, but I would have thought that'd be too much and therefore uncomfortable underneath gloves.

      Hey ya Alvin!
      I've done that in the past - I have 3 or 4 gloves that I buy at the start of the season. I typically find the one I like best and wear it until it breaks then switch to another. There's no harm in keeping them unused. Just keep them in your house as opposed to outside or anything like that or the temperature/moisture might affect them. I normally keep them under my bed :)
