Definitely good points. I've been doing CrossFit for the first time the past four months 4x week, and I notice these problems. People in the gym trying to make the fastest time sometimes cutting corners; everyone does at some point. Coming from years of gymnastics and multiple other sports, I have come to like CrossFit and definitely will stick to it (even though it's mostly lifting and cardio: there's not much gymnastics). It's the best option I have found for adults that want more out of a gym membership. I just take longer to finish a workout, so I know I actually worked out! The rest of the hoopla, I can take it or leave it, but it's nice getting to know people that you workout with.

Yes. Also, it's a great way to get into shape and stay in shape. I prefer to take my time with the barbell work though. I'm not comfortable rushing those movements for time.

Ash K then there's an issue with your coaches. If I my WOD includes cleans, and they're not done well technically I will be asked to repeat them. So they concentrate on technique rather than numbers.

Then I joined a conventional gym and dropped from 21% body fat to 14% in just 2 month and my back no longer hurts. So yeah, I definitely think CrossFit is not good or at least not for me, now I want to get started on calisthenics.

@@0kojack0 I agree 100 percent. You also can't expect to see results with limited training either. You need to have both a good diet and a good training program. In my opinion Cross-fit cuts many corners in certain exercises that require proper form and technique. Many people that take Cross-fit result in many injuries because they lack proper form.

I've been involved in Crossfit for the past 2 years - and at first this was a huge issue for some of us (for example I come from a martial arts background where form and proper technique is king). Our headcoach took our points to heart and implemented proper weightlifting classes (our WL coach is an Olympic WL athlete), functional body building w/ calisthenics by a coach who properly knows his stuff, and even yoga by a qualified instructor.
During training his main goal is that our movements are properly done and not just reps for reps' sake.

    True Story:
20 years ago, I came across a Men's Workout magazine that promised phenomenal results with a simple basic routine where perfect execution of the exercise was prioritized over rep amounts. It only required total devotion to form and discipline in executing them perfectly and without haste. I tried it for a week.
A week later, the only difference I noticed in my workouts were that they were easier, but I wasn't doing more of them. Even though I knew I could add more reps, I stuck to the plan against my natural inclination to do more. I focused on more perfection over more reps.
However, my body looked amazing. It truly was the fastest way to achieve results that were more than just aesthetic. There's a saying I learned recently that seems to fit this approach; "Slow is fast." Something done perfectly as needed is always more productive than something done improperly more times.
Moving forwards after that, progression was the key once you mastered the basic exercises and variety was added to expand the benefits of said workout.
    So Chris is 100% correct.

I've been doing CrossFit for about 2 years now, and I agree with everything this dude is saying. There's too many coaches who don't train people right. Not only are these people not seeing the results they should, they're setting themselves up for some nasty injuries. Fortunately I got a great coach that stresses fundamentals above all else, and is big on progression to tougher movements. He's got degrees in sports medicine and was a trainer for about 15 years before doing crossfit. That's why I trust him. If I hadn't met him as the spouse of my wife's co-worker, I never would've set foot in a crossfit gym. I say all that to say, this guy is right about a majority of crossfitters, so if you're gonna do it, make sure you get a coach that knows his stuff.

Exactly, I'd say it very much depends on the coach. Mine also stresses form and progression over cutting corners for time. Also everyone in the gym should be holding you accountable because you're not only cheating yourself by cutting corners but you're saying with your time that you are better than everyone you beat.

It's also the same for a lot Martial Arts schools I'd say. You have a shitload of Bullshido "Masters" saying how they're this and that, and almost the totality of them have a fat gut and weigh over 300lbs... They focus on "technique" but it only really "works" if it's done in the same controlled environment demonstrated in the course. Chris
I’m a 55 yr old guy. Who at a young age was very active and athletic. Over 30 yrs life happened. Couch potato, junk food you name it. 2 years ago I came to a cross road. I needed to decide if I was going to live a life or give up. I decided to do something about my situation but something that would last. 2 years ago I started learning about diet and nutrition. I started out at 330 lbs. and now I’m down to about 265lbs. Great progress in my journey so far but exercise is also important so I started walking. At first I could only do about 15 min but gradually worked up to regimen of about 3 or 4 miles a day. This past December I’ve implemented mild weight training and I’ve found it made a big difference. However, since prowling around UA-cam I stumbled across your ThenX channel and loved it. At this time I cannot do even one pull up. I can do about 30 push ups but not with good form so I’ve started over and am committed to doing one push up with perfect form. I went onto the internet and found a couple of local parks that are set up for calisthenics. I’m going to practice the Australian pull-up and I don’t care how long it takes me to do it but now I jacked to do one good pull up with perfect form and progress from there. I’m a year out from retirement and I want to enter my new life with an overall health and wellness mindset. I wanted to thank you for your great perspective that you’ve given to me. Here we go!!!!

Fast reps equal no hypertrophy; which is when the actin and myosin contract in order to increase size. When you just focus on speed, you lose form, it's a compromise, would you rather do 10 good pull ups in a row or 30 non engaging exercises and lack strength just to "look" like their strong but in reality people aren't really development technique but speed.

I have been doing CrossFit for 2 and a half years. And you do make some relevant points here. It is true that some boxes will allow anyone to start doing butterfly’s and kipping ring muscle ups super early. But not all boxes. The ones with good coaches twill make members have strength before moving into kipping movements. For example at my box you need 10 STRICT good form pull ups before you can do kipping. And you need 15 before you can do butterfly’s. This DRAMATICALLY reduces chance of injury. Same thing with ring muscle ups. You need to know how to do strict before you can kip. It is not true there are no professions. The good boxes will make sure there is progression.
The whole reason for kipping is to improve efficiency of the movement, to make it easier and faster for competition. Obviously kipping is useless in calisthenics because it does not build strength anywhere near as fast as strict. In CrossFit though, we still do strict training to increase strength. The only time we will do kipping is if there is a fitness test, or we are working on technique.
Also some point you made is that you will never bet able to do one arm pull ups and weighted muscle ups if you only do kipping pull ups. Well for starters, CrossFitters don’t have the goal of doing one arm pull ups or weighted muscle ups, we couldn’t care less because those movements are not in our competitions. And I I said before, we train with strict strength to build muscle, and are well aware that kipping doesn’t build muscle

Funny that I get the video recommended moments after I've signed up for a trail training in a crossfit box. Now I completely agree with you but apparently not all crossfit boxes are like that (fortunately). A colleague of mine has been training there for years now and the part that got me is that the trainers there are all physiotherapists. They don't do the time shit and don't just push for as many reps as possible. They enforce proper posture and a another big thing for me is that people are training together, not against each other. Well, let's see..
On a side note: I mainly want to get "back" into shape, didn't do much apart from rehab after I've broke both my legs about a year ago and soon I'm allowed to go bouldering again. Still, I think when I start with crossfit I try to stick with it along bouldering.

There are numerous Crossfit types of people out there.
    1) The person who is very competitive and will cut corners to be at the top (This individual gets called out, noticed, and is only cheating himself in his workouts)
    2) The person who scales their workouts and never worries about where they are located on the Wodify board. This person concentrates on progressions and getting better at all movements before, during, and after WODS
3). The person who just started and is interested in learning and come out to give Crossfit a shot...generally they have an unbiased view of Crossfit and will go in because they have seen the games before
4). The competitive crossfitter. This individual has it all, can run, jump, pull up, clean and jerk and snatch more weight than most people can and is the best at ALL progressions, not just one.
All of these people enjoy one thing...the comradery and push from being in a group workout. When someone finishes a WOD, you feel a sense of accomplishment. Not all Crossfit boxes care too much about form and that’s what the issue is with the persona of the sport. But if you find the right gym, they will stop you mid WOD and make sure that your form is on point. I cant tell you how many times I have been stopped mid workout to be told to tighten my shoulders, get off my toes, etc....It’s not the sport but the people who coach it. No matter what gym you go to, you will find those that cut corners to get the bar overhead and such.
Ultimately, Crossfit as a whole is not in the wrong one bit. Everything has its own progression and own style. Butterfly pull-ups are not strict and therefor, a bit easier to do in multiples...I get it. Don’t compare apples and oranges.

CrossFit trainer here. I agree with your points. If you go to a CrossFit trainer certification class you are taught the charter of mechanism, consistency then load. No one should be doing kipping pullups before they can do a strict pull-up. And believe me every crossfiter wants that ring muscle up. Speed is one aspect of fitness that we are after but not all. There are plenty slow and heavy workouts and skill sessions that are not timed in a good CrossFit program. And if you watch the top athletes they are doing more and more of your advanced movements the rest of us are just getting there. There's only so much time an individual can allot to training so instead of focusing on being advanced in one specialty we choose to be good on a lot of things. As a coach, if you move perfectly I will encourage you to move faster until your form breaks a little and work at that pace to build capacity untill your form is perfect again. But I wouldn't allow your form to break down so much to the level of unsafe. Intensity is relative to the individual. The world's best gymnast can't win a strong man competition. We don't want to train one thing to the extreme at the expense of other aspects of fitness. Constantly varied. That's the key

I do CrossFit but I think a huge issue is the short time to get an L1. Most of the best coaches tend to also have more than just L1 knowledge and training, as they have prior coaching experience in sports like Weightlifting or Gymnastics. Will say props to you for knowing how to manage load and form - something many CrossFit coaches at gyms have no clue about.
Most of the top athletes like Justin Medeiros and Tia Toomey are not doing the classes. Instead, they are doing full on training programs like HWPO, PRVN, and Mayhem. They spend so much time addressing their own weaknesses and enhancing their strengths.

Alex M I stopped Crossfit for a few reasons; time, money, and goals shifting towards more body weight skills. The place I was going to was actually more technique focused than other Crossfit gyms I’ve worked out at and the coaching was good but Chris did sum up the mentality of the competition side of things well. I’ve been humbled by my true lack of strength starting this program and will be super stoked once I get my one arm pulls down.

Usually when I train, ill mix crossfit with bodybuilding program and trying my best to avoid all the cheat form. To be honest, I couldn't perform the kipping pull up efficiently so I go with the regular pull ups. I found its actually helps you get fitter and stronger personally.
In my opinion, Thenx always share important information on bodyweight training, no doubt on his opinion in crossfit. Also, you may change to a correct form for those kipping movement to get yourself better.

He never claimed natural and vaguely hinted at his usage in a video about steroids. Also, he has too much muscle to be natural, there's plenty of videos where hes shirtless and you can see that he's pretty lean, combine this with his stats: 1.78cm & 100kg, and you get an ffmi of 27 at 15% bodyfat. Too high.
edit: not to say that he doesn't have very good genetics, a good work ethic and years of dedication. He probably takes a pretty low dose.

Perfect form! Makes perfect sense! :)
That being said, I have to say the person with the (in my opinion) highest amount of energy I ever personally met was a woman doing crossfit training. We were helping a friend to move to another place, and she has so much power and endurance that everyone else, including me, was highly impressed. I was (only) doing Parkour at that time. I later learned she is actually not only practicing it but is a trainer. Wow, she was strong!!
I think Calisthenics gives extremely strong muscles and great body shape, also enormous will power required to engage those muscles at maximum strength. Crossfit may not shape your body as well, but the endurance you get is incredible. Cool thing would be to combine the strengths of both!

I've been lifting (mostly powerlifting) for the past decade and can do over 20 strict pull-ups. I've benched 335 lbs and dead lifted 510 lbs. I recently joined a CrossFit gym to improve my overall fitness. I was weary at first, but after doing a lot of their classes (it's NOT just WODs) I see that the coaches want all athletes to learn the FUNDAMENTAL movements before doing, say, a kipping pull-up or muscle up. One of the coaches said "you should NOT be doing kipping pull-ups if you can't do strict pull-ups." I've been learning snatches and power cleans all while following programs that STILL INCORPORATE heavy back squats, front squats, bench press, strict overhead press, STRICT pull-ups (and pull-up progressions for those who can't do a pull-up yet), etc. I see that you are a calesthenic guru, but that is your SPECIALTY. A lot of these guys were gymnasts, cross-country runners, or powerlifters before doing CrossFit. At the gym I go to, form and technique is VERY important. I would challenge you to do one of the workouts OUTSIDE your specialty, like one involving power cleans, rowing, snatches, etc. Everyone has strengths and weaknesses. The awesome thing about CrossFit is that you are able to become a stronger and fitter version of yourself. I respect what you do, but it seems you are only focused on a few surface level aspects of CrossFit, or maybe have only come across bad versions of it. Drop by CrossFit Invictus Boston if you ever want to get a more accurate picture of what CrossFit is.

You don’t get it don’t you ? What he is taller about is called perfect form , and that’s a thing in every other sport , you need to be efficient, in boxing for example, you can’t be throwing punches randomly you have to learn how to throw a punch perfectly or it’s not gonna work in a VS match ! In power lifting too , there are rules to follow to not injure your self ,to not excessively workout the wrong muscles, how to grip or how to lift , you need to do things perfectly, that’s good for you and you probably not get injured , and even if you can lift a million ton you still can’t do a muscle up.
