I just noticed an editing mistake in the video, at around 7:57 to 8:13 there is a section with no voice over. I'm so sorry I didn't notice this while I was editing. For updates on my new videos and projects, check out my UA-cam Community page. :)
9:15 in an interview for Super Mario Bros 25th anniversary, Miyamoto claimed in the original concept for the game Mario would shoot bullets straight forward, but this was changed to the fire flower because they wanted an emphasis on platforming rather than shoot-em-up gameplay. There's no art or prototypes known to exist of this tho.
Good video. This is not a criticism of Astral Antonio: many of the entries got dumber the farther down the "iceberg" went. I have played Super Mario Bros for over 30 years, and I can tell you with absolute certainty that there never was any "secret" simultaneous multiplayer. Ever. The NES just did not have that capability, at least when SMB was released.
@Ajay R Nah, icebergs are fun but you just have to know going in that the deeper you go, the less likely that the entries are much more than dumb urban legend stuff.

Regarding toads being bricks, later on in the manual it explains that when you hit a brick block, you free the toad inside it and get rewarded 100 points, coins, or power ups.
Great video! Deserve more subs. Iceberg videos are my favorite, definitely going to add some of your videos to watch later to watch on my lunchbreak at work 😂
10:33 Sometimes when playing Super Mario Bros. in an emulator, when pressing start, the game loads World 0-1 by default (Pressing A + Start in the title can make the player go to World 1-1). World 0-1 is an underwater version of World 4-4 (without enemies, and you can get trapped). I remember World 0-0 being the same thing as World 0-1.
@@astralantonio2020 I also remember an old hack named Mario W-256, where you can choose 256 worlds (depending of these, they are fully playable or unplayable, or somewhat unplayable, the Minus World appeared to be World 36) My favorite world was World 9, which is similar to the World 9 of Super Mario Bros. 2 Japan (Super Mario Bros. The Lost Levels): an underwater world. World 9-1 is World 6-2. And World 9-2 is World 1-4.
The source of this was about a glitch by switching Tennis and Super Mario Bros. (in a real NES, emulator will not work) I don't remember this but you can research it.
Just found your channel. This was like ASMR but for retro video games. Cool way to combine memes, reddit, retro games. Well done, Another sub for you sir!
FYI, NES games are not made of "files". The ROMs are pretty much contiguous blobs of data. At best you could separate the code from the graphics. As such there can be no 'lost files'. There are some unused graphics, though, and some unused code, but nothing really all that notable. Famicom Disk System games are made of files, to be fair, but SMB does not have any unused ones.
Oh, I was unaware of that. I just said files since that's what it said on the iceberg picture that I was using. Thank you for letting me know that though. I always enjoy learning new things I didn't know about retro games. :)
The Beyond The Finish Line glitched graphics can only be seen if the player gets infinite time, which is normally impossible. Cheat/Game Genie codes must be used for this.
I believe that the Toad people were turned into unsmashable bricks, such as the ones you walk along. Nintendo wouldn't let Mario destroy innocent lives, just my opinion.
The 1-up trick isn't infinite, the hexadecimal only allows for 255 lives. If you get more than that the number rolls over into a negative integer and will trigger a game over after 1 death.
@@astralantonio2020 IIRC, there's even been later games poking fun at this: either encouraging the trick or tweaking the physics so the shelljump strat doesn't work.
small note: the time:000 is a unused parameter originally used for the underground/under water level entrances but the final game just had it so that the timer is completely unused and the "mario with guns" is believed to be from the same piece of concept art as the cloud or a similar piece highlighting planned controls for the game with up on the d-pad being used to jump and the A button used for a "item" with brackets naming a rifle and a beam gun i got these from the cutting room floor which also gives a development timeline which goes a little something like this (which i copy-pasted from the cutting room floor just the source links removed) 1984 Fall - Development started at the same time as The Legend of Zelda, after Devil World and Excitebike were finished. December - Miyamoto requests programmers at SRD to form an experiment with a controllable rectangle. 1985 Unknown Date - Specifications for Mario riding around in a cloud and rocket are drawn up. February 5th - An early control scheme is designed. February 20th - Specification describing the mechanics of how becoming big would work is written. February 28th - Planning sheet is drawn up containing Donkey Kong and Donkey Kong Jr. assets such a red girder and a vine. March 8th - Another planning sheet is created, possibly made for level planning. June 27th - A draft of an early green title screen is drawn up. July 19th - World 1-1 is finished around this time. July - Although the initial release date was intended to be during summer break, development time was furthered by 3-4 weeks to finish the game. August 12th - Game was likely finished around this time according to the SMAS partial source code leak. September 13th - Game released for the Famicom. October - Game released for the Nintendo Entertainment System in the USA. The exact date for the release is unknown. 1986 February 21st - Game released for the Famicom Disk System. 1987 May 15th - Game released for the Nintendo Entertainment System in Europe.
I once saw a vhs tape of my dad's playthrough on smb. After saving the princess, he was the send to this unknow water level that was black background, & clouds as the floor. Only a few seconds in, he swimed until there was nothing, all pitched black as the star music continued to play. There was nothing he could do so he called it quit. To this day I still don't know what that was & tape was never seen again along with other recordings.
Just an hour, I found the level that I described & turns out there are more hidden levels. I tried to find more footage but this is the closest I'll ever get. You can find it here ua-cam.com/video/E6qRbk5Cscw/v-deo.html on 24:25
I wonder if the secret multiplayer is talking about how the second controller can pause the game while player 1 is playing and that can drop them into a pit? Also, in case you didn't come across it, the infinite lives "glitch" was added intentionally. No one knows if the rest were as well. I'm surprised the small fire Mario glitch wasn't on the iceberg, actually, that's a cool one.
Hello I would like to weigh in on this. In 1983 Mario killed my father in a Chicago arcade, I was there 🐢 In 1990 I was the first Green Koopa in 1-3 but I just kinda hung out, until... I got a starring spot in Super Mario Kart! I entered so I had a chance to avenge my father, but I lost. After that I moved to Southeast Asia and started working with Hummer Team and got some light plastic surgery (See profile pic) and worked with some actors in the fighting game Kart Fighter. My cousins have been in all the games since. Nintendo won't hire me back looking like this 🐢😆
Yeah, I completely misinterpreted the cloud concept art in this video. I thought it was like in later games where Mario could ride in Lakitu's cloud. Thank you for clarifying, and thank you for watching. :)

Well maybe that's connected to the shooter levels in the GB Mario Land version? Miyamoto may have gotten (some) of what he wanted there :D
There was an early diagram listing the controls for the game that did have a shooting button on it

I don't think most of the entries were serious. Most icebergs are just memes anyways
@Ajay R Nah, icebergs are fun but you just have to know going in that the deeper you go, the less likely that the entries are much more than dumb urban legend stuff.
A two player mode would be possible only if there were no enemies in the levels, or just much less of them, because it would be a flickery mess.
@@noveltyman6723 That or no scrolling environment and no background graphics and now you're playing Arcade Mario Bros.
