  • I had the pleasure to attend and setup at the 2022 Red River Free-mo setup. This year our venue was in Gainesville, Texas. We had many fantastic modules and models show up. Sadly a few attendees had to drop out at the last minute. This weekend was ruled by passenger trains, having 2 big stations on either end of the layout provided good opportunities for such trains. A good portion of the layout had MSS (wayside signaling logic) functioning, it is technically not a standard but it is becoming strongly recommended as more and more existing and new modules are incorporating the feature.
    This was my first Free-mo attendance in quite awhile due to life getting in the way so I was happy to attend and see all the wonderful gentlemen who were in attendance as well, I look foward to our next setup opportinity!

    What a cool idea to link up the pieces of layout made by different model railway enthusiasts. It really is superb and will cement the relations between participitants constructively too. Thanks for your video.

    You're a great tour guide throughout this video. 🎥 I am pleased with all the scenery, trains diesels, testing , Another impressive, inspiring layout the entire groups have built with every arts & crafts that goes into the hobby. My outstanding rail pro picks: the underpass with the orange tunnel lighting, & The E unit diesel engines including AMTRAK. Excellent video of 100% very well done! 👍✅👋👋👋⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

    Greetings from Birmingham UK 🇬🇧. I have seen many, what we consider large layouts at exhibitions over the years. Some have been modular, but by individual modellers, who can take various parts of their layouts to suit the accomodation available. This is something new to me and a very interesting idea. A cooperative model that could go on almost literally forever. Eat your hearts out train simulators 🤣🤣. Loved the walk about demo, and the many individual scenes. The various bridges were quite outstanding. My one, not critical, observation is that many of those scenes are probably better seen from inside the layout. Fantastic overall, thank you for sharing 😀👍

    We just had Mike and Jim Zucker from Spring Creek Model Trains on a zoom/UA-cam meetup show I help direct. Do you know them? Jim does Nscale and Mike does HO.
    What’s the radius of that end loop you showed at the start? Any diagrams of the frame to build that?

    • @southwestchieffree-mo6136
      @southwestchieffree-mo6136  2 роки тому +1

      Hi Ken, as it turns out I have known the Zuckers for over a decade, I live less than 45 minutes from the store and work about 30 minutes away so I sneak over there fairly regularly to see how everyone is and peruse the shelves for anything that catches my eye. They are truly good people with a passion for the hobby! As for radii and drawings of the loop I have no idea, all I know is those are not the plans you would want to follow as the builders of the loop tell me it is a substancial pain to setup and transport. If I had to guess I would say the radius of the middle track is about 60".

      @@southwestchieffree-mo6136 wish I lived that close, or maybe better for my pocketbook that I don’t. Really huge looking from images they showed of the store!
      As for the end loop, I saw that it was made up of linear sections rather than curved sections. That’s what I felt I wanted to try for making a test loop/return loop. What are they called? Trapezoid? Since I do Nscale, I’d shrink it down though. Oh well, back to the drawing board.

    4:27 I see someone has beaten me to it, building an F45-B unit.
    8:09 Dallas Union Terminal build to scale, absolutely impressive! I would ask just where did they get their "big wooden clothespins from?", but I know the project is far from being done and those are a great idea of keeping the trains safe and not sticking out like a sore thumb as a smaller silver-colored metal clip would.
    Great tour. I wish there was a Free-Mo N group near me.

    • @southwestchieffree-mo6136
      @southwestchieffree-mo6136  2 роки тому +2

      As far as I'm aware we will not be setting up. I am out of town and many of the other Nebraska guys have other obligations. Even though we most likely won't be there I'm sure it will be a great show, sadly this will be the first time I've missed it in nearly 20 years. I'm not sure when or where the next local setup will be, we have had a lot of good setups that require a good bit of travel. I would try to organize one but my work schedule has me traveling from coast to coast at random times so commiting to anything has been difficult. Maybe I'll get one going around Beatrice-Lincoln area next summer once I'm off the road and in a more predictable place in life.
      Thanks for asking!

    • @southwestchieffree-mo6136
      @southwestchieffree-mo6136  2 роки тому

      Thanks Louis, as for setting up its a bit of a process. First we have a design telling us where every module will go (most of the time that doesn't happen as planned but its usually pretty close). Then everything is unloaded and put in its general location, we then stand everything on its legs. Next we finalize the position of what we call the cornerstone module, the one that everything is referenced to. From the cornerstone we work in either direction setting up and connecting the modules together untill we have them all connected. After that we hook up the electronics and install fitter rails between modules.

    Is there a video showing how it all comes together? How is it decided where to put the sections?

    • @paolomargini7904
      @paolomargini7904 2 роки тому +1

      It is normal that such gatherings are made up by many modules. The important is that the height and the position of the main lines are perfectly aligned so they can be joined to any other module.

    • @southwestchieffree-mo6136
      @southwestchieffree-mo6136  2 роки тому

      The biggest challenge is fitting a layout into the space provided. Most of our modules have a CAD file for digital layout building. The layout designer can play around with module postions until they get something useable. I have designed a couple layouts and will say its a blast but time consuming. As for the video I attempted a time laps but it didn't turn out so well, I may try and salvage parts of it but might not be able to use much of it.

      I'm modeling the Rio Grande Zephyr and toward that have a Palace Car Company brass P-S combine painted for late 70's operations. I also replaced my older Genesis F9's with the newer version that came out a in 2020 which has most of the detailing correct. Of course Broadway CZ cars will be standing in for the no-nameboard cars but have the correct D&RGW names.

    Can you provide dimensions of the corner/curved modules. I know there are specifics for the one and two track straight modules . A photo or drawing of the frame for a corner (45 degrees) would be very helpful. Thanks.

    • @southwestchieffree-mo6136
      @southwestchieffree-mo6136  2 роки тому +1

      Aric, unfortunatly I cannot provide any drawings or plans at this point in time. My best advice would be to find a Free-mo setup near you and offer to help setup. While in attendance ask all the questions you can think of and make plenty of friends, experience goes a long way for building modules. In the mean time check out free-mo.org, the standards are on the website and will help you understand the basics of module construction. My biggest tip would be to start small, maybe a 4 or 5 foot gentle curve like 10 or 15 degrees.

    So different people built each scene? How do you get all the tracks to line up perfectly??

    • @southwestchieffree-mo6136
      @southwestchieffree-mo6136  2 роки тому

      Yes, each scene is built differently. As an organization we have a standard that must be adhered to at the end of your scene. Each scene has the same standard so they all line up perfectly and can be interchanged in any order or orientation to fit the needs of the space.
