Hi… Originally the Blacking was just Tar or Pitch and when it was being painted on it had to be heated up a lot ( in old photos you would see various buckets dotted around the Boat on the fire or braziers being heated up ) it had to be heated because it was more of a solid state when cold ( just what you need on a Narrow Boat). The temperature and humidity is pretty important when painting the more modern paint ( blacking ) ,obviously steel is a cold surface and you will have hot spots and cold spots, old saucepans come in handy for the process of decanting from the big paint container. You have two options :- 1 : Heating up the big tin on a portable gas Hob using a diffuser on the flame so it doesn’t burn the bottom of the Tin,you then use your saucepan to get a pan full and either use a brush ( preferred ) or put that into a paint tray for the roller ( not cheap tray’s but metal ones as they hold the heat better ). 2 : Decant the blacking into the saucepans and warm them up using portable hobs ( No diffuser necessary ) and use a brush ( because the blacking is hot it goes on lovely and smooth and will start to set/dry as it cools down ). Boatyards have done it this way for years and it is a lot quicker and you will actually use less blacking than if you did it cold. Top Tip if you are going to do it Cold, you must make sure that the brush or roller is loaded as much as you can with blacking,it’s the complete opposite from where you would be painting a wall say,if you don’t have enough paint on the roller or the brush you will " Drag " the coat off beneath from what you are painting. Great video ❤

I'm sure your blacking problem was due to the low temperature. The manufacturer provides a temperature to drying time table and below 10deg C it takes a long time, it's not a winter job or even spring come to that. Hi. Not sure what a copper bottom would do to our boat. Some are having a zinc coated bottom done now but not heard of copper. Thanks for your comment. 👍❤️
I ask another narrow boater and they weren't sure but, speaking of paint colors, I've noticed some narrow boats have a multicolored trim on the front, usually along the top. Some I've seen have colored triangles like red, blue, yellow for example, on the top of a post mounted on the front. Others have multi-colors on the top trim along the bow. I was wondering if you may know if they mean anything. They look like they could be something used by boats in the past to indicate what kind of cargo they carried or maybe the area they were from or... ? Thanks!

🤣🤣🤣 I did think that… Michaels space suit was covered in it! Mine however was like it had just come out of the packet 👌👌. Great comment thanks for taking the time to leave it x
Hi guys, silly question from a non boater, do you blacken right underneath the hull if so how, there doesn't look like there's any room?
Great question John thanks for the comment 🙏. The base gets done next time and yes you’re right so little space. We’d do it when we’re hanging in the strops… more on my hands and knees looking upwards!! Look forward to that experience 🤣🤣🤣
That was a messy but very necessary job Michael & Jackie. well done for preserving and getting it done despite the peeling issue at coat two .. look forward to seeing her be put back into the water in the next episode. Thank you for all your lovely videos … can I ask where the clip in your intro was filmed where Jackie is having a good lick of an ice cream? Was that in Henley upon Thames ?
Hi David love the comments 🙏🙏. Next weeks is a real treat as well as being so scary seeing your home suspended above other boats 🫣🫣!
The ice cream was Marlow, the store was Amorino… the whole process was a work of art and was one of the best tasting 🍨 I’ve ever had. I had to sit down in the shade to devour it 🤣🤣
@@cruisingontheborder sounds like it’s another exciting episode .. thanks for letting me know it was in Marlow .. I knew I recognised the town but couldn’t quite put my finger on where!
Will see if I can visit it next time I’m down the south of my county visiting the tap room at the Rebellion Brewery in nearby Marlow Bottom!
David make sure you visit the ice cream 🍦 shop!! Shouldn’t be missed 👌
I love your banter! Very entertaining 😂! Especially painting the stern 😂! Lovely videos guys! Well done with the painting 💪
Thank you so much… all this is our natural banter 😂😂😂 we’re both as cheeky as each other 👌
Gas! There are plenty of ropes on a narrower boat
Hi John.
There are.. good thinking Batman! I suppose we got it done without a dead back again so all good. 👍❤️
My wife also picks faults with my painting it must be a woman thing 😆😆 good to see you managed to get a chocolate break in 👍great video 👏😊
Hi Gaz.
I should have just left it to Jaq! She went over what I’d done anyway as you saw so it would have been easier to chill and watch! 🤣🤣🤣
If only married life was that easy 🤣🤣
No one told us it would be easy Gaz! 🤣🤣
You know how the old wooden boats had there bottoms covered with copper to stop them from falling apart, would doing this help your boat????
? Thanks!
Hi Roger thank you 🙏 so much for taking the time to drop us a comment. Now we hadn’t heard that idea, it’s s very interesting one and maybe you have something?!?! Does anyone else know?? 😀
Did you check the date on the paint.
New subby
Hi George
Welcome to our channel. Thanks for subbing!
I did check the date. All was good. Think it was a temperature problem.
We post a new video every Wednesday so lots more adventures coming up! 👍❤️
I tied a rope to my gas bottle to lower it off my boat and the same with getting the new one back on. My boat is out of the water and has been fir two years im sick of waiting for the ork to be finished
Hi 👋 what a great idea. A least there was two of up to lift it up. Hope you’re back in the water soon 🤞
how dare he say you cannot have A CHOCY biscuit with a brew, enjoy
Hi Foxy.
I don’t think I’d ever stop Jaq having a biccy even if I tried. But it’s good to bants with her. She does love her chocolate! 🤣🤣❤️👍
hi can you give me the full details of your Ariel as when I went onto the website there was lots :) if you could tell me exactly what the code or full item description as I would like to order one , PS your you tube is our look forward to each week
Hi Chris
The Ariel is a game changer! Really great piece of kit with a very high gain.
Here is exactly what we have
MIMO MAG ANTENNA
Product ID:
MIMOCOLMAG TS
It is from Badland uk.
Good luck and do let us know how you get on with it
👍❤️
how you do bottom of boat as its on the ground
Hi
We only do the base plate every other blacking but some do it everytime. It’s personal choice. The boats are lifted and put on high chocks so we can get underneath. 👍❤️
@@cruisingontheborderand do you lift the boat up to shuffle the chicks along, so you can paint the bits that were previously supporting the boat?
Need a tub of pussers boot topping, remember having to paint that
Ah.. your right my friend. I’m sure if I’d have put the call out to a few ex Navy friends like yourself we’d have got it sorted in no time. Jaq could have brought the blacking brushes etc back in my old pussers grip.. still got your too?? Take care my friend and fair winds..
👍👍👍
@@cruisingontheborder What map books do you recommend, that covers all the canals, rivers and other navigations, that also has max aircraft, beam etc. I know most stuff is on the inter web but I still like to use books, all best
Hi .
We use the Nicholson guides. There is one for every canal and river. They are detailed and have lots of info from dimensions to historical facts etc.
Hope that helps?
👍👌❤️🇨🇦,
A challenging few days for us. 🤔🤔 🥰
Dont buy stuff at a Chandelry its premium price and most is available elsewhere .
Hi.
Thanks for leaving us a comment.
We were aware that things are more expensive at chandlers but time was pressing and we had our car there so needs must I’m afraid. 👍❤️
It's not dride properly in places.
Thanks for the comment, as we mentioned the temperature was a problem but we rectified that and it all went really well in the end. Hope you liked the way we presented it all. J&M x
