    Beating ZeRo in top level play is like going Super Saiyan for the first time. At first, nobody could do it. But once one person did it, other people started to do it as well, and after a short amount of time, pretty much everyone's already done it, and the achievement is no longer as grand as it once was.

      i think this is mostly attributable to the 2-month dip combined with people training extra hard for the summer of smash. if you look at street fighter tournaments, pretty much everyone except the top 2-4 players can randomly just drown in pools sometimes, both due to the format, and the skill levels. Tons of street fighter players have enough knowledge and execution to have a chance at beating top players, should the stars align. I have a feeling smash 4 has the potential to go in that direction, in addition to the fact that a lot of consistent strategies have been nerfed up.

      I'm so glad you included the part about learning different characters and especially learning characters that are better or "broken". You will immediately pick up on the characters' weaknesses if you play them yourself. It's also good for learning techniques that are commonly used for certain characters and attempting to apply them to your mains. So broken.

    Yes, another method that may have not been mentioned is have confidence and don't blame your character all the time, observe how you're using the character and find a solution.

    Very good guide for basics. I do wish everyone would take the advise though. I've said similar things to others and they just got mad at me for suggesting it. Particularly when it comes to trying out other characters. Some people think you're insulting them. They usually give me the excuse that they like the character, and that's fine they have a main, but you guys give the good point that playing other characters helps you understand the game better.

    How to improve
    1. Practice beating 2 level 9 cpu's on the same team with team attack off(1v2)
    2. Go in training and Ko the cpu 2 times in run mode
    3. In training play the speed in 1/4 to get increase in your gaming speed
    4. Play handicapped matches where your health is at 80 and the cpu at 0
    5. Aim better in classic mode or beat 9.0
    6. Practice true combos or combos in general or study your character's play style or play style's

    I have been playing Smash for 5 years now and I started learning obvious things like fast falling really late and I barely just started playing "mental" (like observing what your opponent does and reacting conveniently). It makes me kind of sad and frustrated but hey, better late than never after all. I started watching techniques, pro players ect. a few months ago. What made me realise that I played the game completly wrong and made me decide that I really wanted to improve was simply watching Smash Central's lesson 1 on how to Smash for beginners.

    The part about playing characters to learn their weaknesses is what grinds my gears about the DLC characters, if you don't pay up you can't do that strategy, making the learning process MUCH slower.

    so i actually recommend to anyone who wants to improve that they learn smash mechanics in-depth on smashboards and ssbwiki, down to the technical level if possible. i especially recommend this to people who live in an area without much of a smash scene. It gives you the benefit of being able to theorycraft and innovate accurately, and makes it so that you can think of your own options and solutions to practice on your own, and apply against a live opponent afterwards.

      Go into the stage builder room, and make a box made of lava. Leave a little opening in so you can get through. You'll bounce around in the box, and be given multiple opportunities to tech on every direction (ceiling, wall, floor).

      Well, since they do sort of predict by using probabilities, you can sort of mindgame them, but most of the time, especially in the air, if they have the frame data to do so they'll avoid your attack.

    • @PotatotheTroll
      @PotatotheTroll 8 років тому +1

      You can use them to train reflexes, but those situations will probably show up in a human match as well, so it's not as useful to use CPUs unless you're like me and you have bad internet, can't go to tournament, and can't train against friends often.

      +ChillTerumi My friend has one and I only play on his console when we're not playing friendlies offline. I would go out and buy a Wii U and Smash 4 in a heartbeat if the netcode wasn't ass-tier. It feels like I'm playing in mud. I have to predict every narrow margin instead of being able to play reactively in close scenarios and it is a killer for me. I know playing reactively constantly isn't good, but for example, I can't react to an attacking animation or a defensive one. I just have to guess their move. My friends play competitively and they have sworn off online play because it hinders their offline performance. I have seen players pull off some sweet shit online and it boggles my mind because I can't even consistently auto-cancel a move I don't even have to think to do offline.
      Do you play offline commonly as well, or are you just adjusted to the online play?

    • @todanderson9772
      @todanderson9772 8 років тому

      +KvatchIsInDanger Online ranges from .1 - .5 second lag for me usually. Every once in a while you find that one guy with like two seconds, but very rarely. After you play the game for a while, you realize habits that most players have, like rolling in when they are pressured and their back is to the ledge. Little things like that make it easy to read most opponents. Skilled players will need to adapt to each other's styles much more quickly, which is what will separate them from the rest. But you're right, in the end sometimes you just have to throw out attacks just because. Sometimes you just need to guess because the lag makes it really hard to play reactively.

    Great video cFive! :)
    I think one thing that should be noted about observation - If observing another player, you should understand WHY they're doing what they're doing (i.e. why did they do X move in Scenario A?), as opposed to just trying to mindlessly mimicking (not saying that you said to mimic tho). I also feel it's VERY important to find YOUR OWN STYLE as well. If it works for you then go for it!
    I am a Ness main myself, but I actually play pretty differently compared to the other Ness players in my scene; I go SUPER aggro, which admittedly isn't always good (esp. when I land), but when I panic, I airdodge a LOT. But I have pretty good control of PK Thunder and I'm very eager to just jump in (basically I go HAM xD).
    (I save all videos of me playing in my own personal playlist, in most cases I dread watching my old vids and wonder wtf was I thinking? But rewatching some of my better matches feels great)
    --
    Should also note it's pretty important to ask for advice and have even your most little, simple curiosities answered; more often than not, people WILL point out where you go wrong. Or hell even asking something like "how did you act out of Magnet so fast?" (answer to that is that Ness can Magnet Cancel into a spotdodge/roll/jump) can help you out a LOT.
    --
    I personally have issues dealing with tournament nerves, I CONSTANTLY find myself needing to use the washroom and tend to feel feverish so I now bring a spray bottle to cool myself a bit and try to relax. I always get scared but also excited waiting for bracket to start. I also like having my music on as I play (at first I was like "HOW DO YOU PEOPLE PLAY WITHOUT HEARING THE SOUND EFFECTS" but as the weeklies got more crowded and louder I started playing with music on and it helps me feel more focused). Moral: Find a way to enter your "zone" and ways to stay relaxed, and try to stay positive as you can! :)

    I have something to say.
    From the beginning of my experience in Smash, I have always learnt with my own knowledge, I watch only a few tutorials, but nothing else.
    And so I possess my originality, my own fight style and my own combos.
    It needs a lot of time, but the result is that you deserve your skill.
    I see a lot of players trying the combos seen on UA-cam, and I always see the same movepool around a character.
    I think that the "self-teaching" is pretty fun, and efficient if I can say (even if I have a pretty low level).
    Your video is great (of course), but personally, I try to learn by my experience on the game, learning only the bases (B reverse, dash dancing, Foxtrot...)

    You are giving honest advices for advanced players, begginers and pros because this kind of advice can apply for everything, just as you said. Thanks for that.
    But I just think there are many people that get stucked in their "Diddy" and "Sheik" that they don't want to improve at all. All you said is good, even recording your loses. But I wouldn't recommend playing for glory 1 vs 1 because that is not a place for practicing. People there mock at you even if you try or not, sadly.
    So, I think is the best find somebody online that has interest like oneself to improve, or practice yourself with two or three computers. Or even looking for regional (or people in the same city) to meet and have some Smash rounds.

    • @NightmareZV
      @NightmareZV 8 років тому

      That and because when I say the "Diddy and Sheik" think he said I mean that everyone is trying to hard to play the same. For glory 1 on 1 is (at some point) lack of creativity. Most of players use the same "combos" and "chains" they've seen applied in tournaments expecting to always win and when you are able to break and win through that, they don't want to play anymore, they don't approach ever and report you because you win.
      Sounds stupid, but is true.
      Hell, has been too many times I've been in ban list because it'd look I'm too good for some players. Seriously, I don't consider me that good tho, but that's what they left me thinking when they don't approach anymore, self destruct now and then say something mori. and then go.
