Ohhhh man this takes me baaaaaaaaack!! I remember the NinjHax and LoZOoT hacks were all the rage... I went to visit a local game shop in my country and as soon as I entered the store a game brought my attention instantly! A new, sealed copy of Cubic Ninja! It was priced at around 5 bucks too.... I grabbed it ASAP and bought it with the money I had to buy lunch that day haha I was hungry for most of the day, but my gosh I was so happy! That streak of luck let me hack a large number of consoles for friends and anyone who asked me for help. I never charged a dime for the "service" and I made a lot of friends with it! 13 years later I still have that game securely stored in a drawer. I'll keep it forever since it reminds me of a great time in my life :D Thanks Smea and everyone from the scene for creating one of the most epic and cool communities I've ever been part of :) The PSP one was also great! Had a lot of fun with that one too n.n
It was nothing short of a miracle that my daughter had gotten this game at some point. I successfully soft modded her DS and loaded up some NES games on it, since that’s my favorite to emulate. Worked like a charm. I should revisit this mid to see what other emulators are available since I did this several years ago.

I just dont like to have games thst Ibdont wanna play on any of my consoles. But I highly appreciated the effort to look into tons and tons of shovel ware to find that one game that is potentially exploitable and get a stating point frok there... It's magical.
What a funny coincidence. I was just looking for something in my storage room today and then I found the game and remembered how I modded my Nintendo 3DS XL with it back then. I bought it at Gamestop for 9,99€ while it was already sold on eBay for a lot of money. The only Gamestop store with this game was 400km away from me and a friend bought it and sent it to me, it's always a funny story when we see each other.

haha what a great video, i remember asking neimod if i could get more dumping devices xD ending up getting one shipped from a friend back then, great times, gateway came up, eshop games it was fun and a great handheld! loved to play the layton games !
You know that the exploit was the ONLY reason this game got a dedicated Wikipedia page instead of being pushed under the publisher's or developer's page
Quick math lesson: when a game gets 51 out of a possible 100 it's average. It's not poorly rated, it's average. This number inflation thing really needs to be tossed across the industry.
A bit related is the Vita 3.60 firmware version thing back in 2017 or when was it right before H-Encore showed up. Any Vita on firmware up to 3.60 was easily 3~6 times the price of a newer firmware version. I happened to get interested in the Vita again right around that time, and managed to find a cheap 3.67 firmware version one extra cheap, right before people figured out those were also hackable now.
I remember those days like it was yesterday. When the game name was announced, I was VERY skeptical; I had this feeling like it was going to tempt me to buy the game at an inflated cost only to find out it didn’t work or was already patched. By the time I was convinced, it was too late haha! Price was crazy. I ended up waiting for another hack and don’t regret it, but I would have been nice to be on the front lines :)
I didn't know about Ninjhax, since I never even heard of Cubic Ninja. That released in Nov 2014, but in Dec 2014, only a month later, the same guy Smea posted the first UA-cam video of Soundhax. I personally used the MP3 player exploit with the parrots, but that wasn't released until 2 years later. This guy is a legend. Glad Nintendo didn't assassinate him
Seems unlikely. Nintendo aren't that stupid, they learn from their mistakes and make architectural changes with newer generations, just like say Microsoft (going from the 360 to the Xbox One architecture)
I remember using that game, sadly I lost the game card in the train, at some point. At that time the price of new copies was still high, and I caved and got a gateway.
This was the big start of 3ds homebrew. Things just expanded from there. Soundhax was big for a long time, and then when NTRBootHax was found it was all over. Of course while NTRBootHax can hack any 3ds model, it did have the issue of requiring a flashcart. And then we got seedminer.
When I jailbroke my 3DS, I still ultimately used a game. But it was Flipnote Studio, which you could get running for free by getting your security code and then replacing the Health and Safety app.
My New Nintendo 3DS (Cover Plate model, not XL) started crashing yesterday! It would either power up but not boot, boot but crash 3-10 seconds after the Home menu pops up or crash at a random point during use! I unfortunately dropped it a week earlier so hopefully it's just a matter of reattaching a ribbon cable! However, I'm worried a trace or even a ribbon cable may have broke! My whole life is on that 3DS, including the many eShop games I bought just before the March closure! I know I can still redownload my eShop purchases if I do have to reboot the system but knowing that certain updates like Mario Kart 7's 1.2 update needed to be downloaded through the eShop, hope those updates can still be redownloaded! This video release came by coincidence the exact day Nintendo released the 11.17 Update for 3DS. which broke the normal 3ds hacking method.
Always look forward to your Monday releases. You are in my top 5 favorite channels. I especially like your ‘(x) console is still awesome in (x) year” format videos.
The Nintendo powerpoint presentation was so damn hilarious because his pfp looks like something out of UK Dennis the Menace.
The GOOSEBUMPS when i hear that synth at the start
QR codes being a feature in games was a thing for a brief time. Fez springs to mind..
Keep covering the others exploits on 3ds, the 3ds homebrew scene was the only one that I actually participated. I love the 3ds
The thought of companies having groups like those Nintendo ninjas is quite scary - I assure you that there’s almost always two companies doing it (whatever that “it” is)
Everybody gangsta until MVG comes up to tell you “mistakes were made” 😂
I already knew this video was going to be good when I saw Cubic Ninja and "mistakes were made" in the thumbnail.
Better watch this video before Nintendo gives it a copyright strike
Better download it then 😁
Why would he? This is old news and no one uses cubic ninja anymore for exploits. It’s all been done. Also Nintendo doesn’t support 3DS at all anymore especially after the recent shutdown of the 3DS and Wii U shops. My Wii U is already hacked and my 3DS I got coming in will be hacked too once I get it. Lol 😂 Nintendo doesn’t care about these platforms anymore. Why would he get a strike? He’s done allot of videos like this and they’re still up
@@Callieforniiaa It's a joke because his Nintendo video about a paperclip got taken down... chill.
@@v3ck1n then the joke is innacurate.
Its UA-cam who takes stuff down, remember how they took down that Cocomelon diss track a few years ago?
@@Callieforniiaa Apparently, you greatly underestimate the sheer pettiness of Nintendo.
Just as I watch this video, Nintendo just pushed a NEW system update to the 3DS...yup.
Ive seen enough of MVG's videos that as soon as he said "Level editor" I knew exactly where this was going lol
Funny that this released on the day that update 11.17 released
Life is goOOd when you're a ninja block. Here's a TV that looks like an apple.
I'll keep it forever since it reminds me of a great time in my life :D Thanks Smea and everyone from the scene for creating one of the most epic and cool communities I've ever been part of :)
The PSP one was also great!
Imagine having the Nintendo mafia (or Yakuza?) show up at your real front door and politely "ask" you to sign a contract in exchange for your safety.
Yeesh. Feels like living in a third world country or something, and yet it's not. These companies are freaking crazy, trying to make it look like they didn't just threaten you for making them lose some money.
And if you deliberately refuse?
@@karisasani7006 then you get sued for enabling piracy.
And nowadays you would also go straught to jail if you live in Japan.. modding a console is forbidden by law in Japan (unles they got rid of it again).
I heard about the game when it came out. It's cool to think a minor feature in a game could get past all the security.
Dude, that was raw.
As soon as I saw the cubic ninja box , I knew what this was gonna be about. Great video, man. By far one of the more interesting methods of hacking a console.
The moment I saw cubic ninja on the thumbnail, I immediately realized what this video was going to be about
I missed out on the ninjhax days of the 3DS...however i was there for the Soundhax one, that was fun. I hope to see a video on that someday.
As important as it is I never really liked hacks that involve getting a certian game to use its features to exploid the hardware.
I just dont like to have games thst Ibdont wanna play on any of my consoles.
But I highly appreciated the effort to look into tons and tons of shovel ware to find that one game that is potentially exploitable and get a stating point frok there... It's magical.
Thanks!
Great video, content packed, personal connection, good twist and all! 👍
Nice watch
What a funny coincidence. I was just looking for something in my storage room today and then I found the game and remembered how I modded my Nintendo 3DS XL with it back then. I bought it at Gamestop for 9,99€ while it was already sold on eBay for a lot of money. The only Gamestop store with this game was 400km away from me and a friend bought it and sent it to me, it's always a funny story when we see each other.
Mistakes were made is back!!! I love those episodes man keep it up
Your music is always great to listen to :)
i saw a copy of this game at a local gamestore that was closing its doors recently and picked it up for around 4 euros, neat little part of 3ds history.
imagine if the guy who made cubic ninja did the qr code thingy rather than streetpass or internet in order for pirates to crack the 3ds security
One of the few 3DS games I have, yet I never played it so it was actually kinda fascinating to see the gameplay in this video lol
haha what a great video, i remember asking neimod if i could get more dumping devices xD ending up getting one shipped from a friend back then, great times, gateway came up, eshop games it was fun and a great handheld! loved to play the layton games !
what curious timing, you uploaded this just as nintendo released a new update that blocks most ways to install cfw on 3ds
Finally you made one for the 3ds! I remeber buying this to mod my 3dsXL in 2015/16
You know that the exploit was the ONLY reason this game got a dedicated Wikipedia page instead of being pushed under the publisher's or developer's page
I picked up Cubic Ninja after the price plummeted because there were other options. Great video on how it all started.
Just hacked a 3ds today and lucky it updated to 11.16 before .17 was released. Used the audio hack and worked great.
Glad Nintendo didn't assassinate him
found mine in a deal bin at a Best Buy during Black Friday that year the hack was released , what a time that was.
Hopefully one day the Switch will have it’s own Cubic Ninja exploit
Seems unlikely. Nintendo aren't that stupid, they learn from their mistakes and make architectural changes with newer generations, just like say Microsoft (going from the 360 to the Xbox One architecture)
I remember using that game, sadly I lost the game card in the train, at some point. At that time the price of new copies was still high, and I caved and got a gateway.
I LOVE the “mistakes were made” videos
This was the big start of 3ds homebrew. Things just expanded from there. Soundhax was big for a long time, and then when NTRBootHax was found it was all over. Of course while NTRBootHax can hack any 3ds model, it did have the issue of requiring a flashcart. And then we got seedminer.
I love that Ubisoft is on the card´s logo
Thank you!
