Oh wow. We thought this was a light hearted romp like Toy Story. So we watched it with our kids who are 4 and 6. By the time us adults realised this was going to be about loss, our kids were already so riveted by the story that we warily stayed with it.
And actually, I'm glad I didn't know what this was about, because I wouldn't have played it. And it was an incredibly rich, thought provoking and heart warming story. Its brutal. I cried a LOT. The kids didnt. They were horrified by Zozo's brutality, but also sympathetic to his pain. They wondered if if bully must have a mean family who make him mean. They LOVED the twist at the end, that that wonderful little girl at the beginning was going to be Ollie's kid afterall.
I think the maturity of children will surprise you if you give them the chance to experience feelings. That's what this film did for us.

Just watched it, and I think an explanation for them being seen and everything is the amount of love you put in them. Like we're told with what happened to Nina she fell apart because she was loved so much, and we see bully talk to them which we know he loves. Mommy can which makes sense considering his heart is full of her love, Billy's kid can because I'm assuming it's the same with the mommy, that love represents their love for the child. Would make sense for her to see Ollie

I haven't truly been invested in the struggle of a main character in a while. But that "damn bunny" broke me and I said "N-No!" out loud when ZoZo tried to rip out his bell after all the shit Ollie went through.

when ollie comes to in the first ep its years after billy's dad leaves him at the shop. shown by him having memory issues. billy takes his daughter to the shop that sets ollie off on his adventure. likely them coming close awakes ollie. its already modern day when the majority of the show is set. not sure how long ollie lays in that puddle but cant be to long as the little girl doesn't age. looks to be about 15 odd years when ollie is taken to the shop to the time he finds billy again.
