Kevlar is heavy. Could bring death faster in hanging. Smart to wear.
The neck often doesn’t break if the noose is positioned in a certain way. Read about hangings in centuries past. They say if the guy hooking u up didn’t like u he could make the noose so you’d strangle without anyone noticing the difference in how he positioned the rope

Such a ‘public’ way of dying is a message of some sort. Whether that was a message from him - or someone else - is obviously debatable. However, I’m more inclined to believe it was suicide.

The bruises could have happened by him struggling while he was hanging, like you all mentioned about him "lowering himself down gently."
He wouldn't have gotten bruises if he was already dead, scrapes & cuts sure, but not bruises. You all were right, you can't get bruises after death.
    Great episode!

Let me specify bc I don't want to piss anyone off on here lol
The blood can settle after death as well as decomposition can cause discoloration that may look like bruising. But the type of bruises that come to mind from injuries specifically, like a black eye etc, are very unlikely to happen after the person is already dead. Hope that adds some clarity hah.

Well, his neck wasn't broken so if he did do it to himself he definitely would have struggled. Without the "instant death" of a hangmans fracture - he would have thrashed around for SEVERAL minutes before suffocating. Pretty terrifying.

That theory about him conditioning himself to be able to hang himself from a window is wilder than the death itself. Jumping from planes and all.. only to make sure you're not scared as you hang dying. Whoever thought of that theory needs help or a publisher cuz damn that's some fantastic story.

If there's a perfectly fine and effective gun right there in the room that's accessible, why would you choose a method that's more elaborate, more painful, and requires more effort? At the end of the day most people will go for whatever is the most effective with the least effort.

What about the threats? I wonder if someone could do a handwriting analysis -- it's _very_ hard to hide your own handwriting; you will always leave in little identifying quips. And the voicemails are always the same woman -- could he have paid someone to recite those things? I could see himself wanting to become one of his novels, to fake his murder.

I remember this happening. I lived in Calumet City from 1989 to 1996. Hegewisch was a small northern part of CC. And you said he moved from Chicago to Park Forest and then say wealthy conclave of Forest Park . Then Stephan says Forest Park too. Park Forest is a drug riddled hole in the map. Forest Park is a little better . Hegewisch is a huge pile of crap on that same unfolded map of south Chicago. All three of those towns can't sit in the Beautiful Shadow that is Chicago . I am positive it was a suicide. He had a bullet proof vest on and brass knuckles in his pocket. He killed himself bc nobody alive is famous. But he wanted to be infamous . He was so paranoid he wanted to kill himself before the mob did ...he was just a paranoid little man and he would never be great. He was forgettable and hoped he would make his name for his family by killing himself. If it looked like murder the insurance would pay , a suicide would pay Zero. He was smart , just not That smart.

    • @ogdencastle
      @ogdencastle  2 роки тому

Yeah, I think I noticed in editing that I switched around Park Forest with Forest Park and vice versa at some point. It would be easier if I had ever been to Chicago!

First let me compliment you both on your podcast, I never miss an episode and I am a very picky consumer. You do a lot of research and put time into your presentations which not enough presenters do, your parents should be proud.
Creative suicide is my guess, he clearly loved his family and friends but was struggling with many issues, career and trauma. Perhaps his soul was rent by the ugly and shallowness of the publishing world, not to mention the movie industry and he couldn't bring himself to capitulate to that market but also loved his family and needed to provide for them. He may have seen suicide as his way out but did not want to hurt his family so did it this way.
The reason I think this is because it reminds me of the story of Granger Taylor and I was a kid who lived around the community he was in and he truly was a hero to us kids at that time and that is why I believe he crafted his brilliant exit, to spare the children. They both seem to have created scenarios that were in line with their brilliance and craft.

I think it was an accident. I think he wanted to see if his character would've been able to save him self by climbing up the rope.
May be he called for his son because he had a bad feeling or premonition that some thing would go wrong.
And in case it did go wrong, he wanted to pass on a possibly final message to his family through his meeting with his son.
It could also have been a stalling tactic because he was nervous about doing it. That's how I think all this was.
