Just wanted to let you guys know I'm hearing y'all loud and clear - very sorry I omitted the original recipe from the game! I was short on time when I shot this last week, and figured it was so full of crazy/toxic ingredients, I should just skip it. There is actually a Chinese restaurant near my house in Seattle called Regent, the creators of the game use to eat there and they based the cake off their Black Forest cake.

The true Portal cake is a Black Forest cake from the Regent bakery in Bellevue, Washington. Close to Valve's HQ and is where Valve bought the cake for reference.
The bakery there even sells the cake itself its really cool I dont like chocolate cake but I still had some and told the Baker there this cake isnt a lie lmao

My mother made the cheapest version of this for my 7th birthday. Boxed cake, homemade whipped cream and a can of Cherries. I’m 40 and it is still my favorite birthday cake ever.

While this is a good and tasty looking facsimile, the actual recipe for the Portal cake (which was based on a cake made at a local Seattle bakery) is listed in the game on computer monitors, and can also be found on the Portal Wikia. I'm sure you can't go wrong either way, but the option is there for those seeking the most authentic experience.

I just finished making one of these. Some advice:
Cook the Jam filling on a high heat for a bit otherwise the corn starch will make it taste bad, while doing this be careful not to burn the sugar.
Place the chocolate bar you are going to grate in the fridge before grating it, then put the flakes in the fridge before decorating.
Use a cake spreader thing (I don't know the actual name, it's a little square peice of semi flexible plastic)
If using a cake stand put a plate on it first. This might seem obvious to most of you but I was an idiot and assembled it on the cake stand and then it wouldn't fit in my fridge. Luckily I managed to lift it off with a serving slice and brute force and by some miracle it all stayed together.

Hey this is 5 months old but how do you keep the eggs from deflating? The instant I turned on my stand mixer's paddle they sank like the titanic
@@ScaryBoiSupreme You really should fold in the dry ingredients and not use a paddle or any other mixer attachment. Folding is done with as large a rubber spatula as you have and the motion is straight down, then turn the spatula and bring the egg whites (or whatever is in the mixture) up over the flour and cocoa, and turn the bowl. Repeat until it's just incorporated. Watch Julia Child fold something; she explains it way better than I can.

Cakes really aren't too hard to bake by hand, I do all my baking without electric tools and if anything I think it gives you a greater level of control over the outcome.
This cake is from a hundred years ago; no mixers then. A big whisk and elbow grease.

It‘s called “Kirsch Wasser” in Germany. Which translates to cherry water. “Kirsch” is just the abbreviation of the name used in England and France.
And if you get the real stuff there’s nothing fake in it whatsoever. They must have sold Andrew some sort of artificially flavored bilge water and slapped a “Kirsch”-label on it and since “Kirsch” is not a thing you can probably throw some jolly ranchers into anti-freeze and get away with it.

It’s based on the cake that the crew of the game would get from the next door bakery every milestone. It is a Black Forest Cake with Coconut chocolate frosting and marinated cherries on buttercream rosettes, it’s great! I loved this

@@epicman720 In the game the villain promises you cake for your accomplishments, constantly. As you go through the levels, you reach a point where you go out of bounds in the testing area. there you see someone wrotr "the cake is a lie" repeatedly on the walls, suggesting that there IS no cake.
So at the beginning of his videos he usually shows a few of the ingredients to make the recipe, but since there is no cake, he showed nothing.

Not gonna lie. I wish he would have made a "game accurate" version first, then made the delicious one. It's fun to see the comparison like in the always sunny video.
Little difficult to make a cake with "fish shaped solid waste" and "ethyl benzene." It's more that he couldn't create create an entirely accurate cake. He probably could have come close by using SOME of the ingredients. I expected a cake with fish guts and such at least, but I do like the cake that he came out with. He showed his mistakes too, so I'm all set.
Making a game accurate version would result in transforming his apartment into a potential Superfund site. I think we can all agree that would be a bit daft on his part.

Cutting the cake in half is much easier when you make only a shallow incision on the outside, then wrap a strong yard around the cake (following the incision) to form a loop, and then pull on both ends to have the yarn loop cut the cake.

Jason King all the crazy stuff is just a “garnish”, underneath is a probably accurate cake recipe. I still love the show but the reason I started watching it was to see recipes made as close to what was described as possible, despite the outcome.

Kirschwasser by itself is definitely gross 😖 but it’s an essential part in an authentic Schwarzwälder Kirsch Torte 😁 the only thing missing that would have made it even better would be the real Black Forest cherries
