      It's designed for nylon strings, but you can make it work on steel strings. You need to control your attack so it doesn't sound too metallic.

    • @neilchanmusic

      You should practice doing that without the guitar. I do that all the time when I'm commuting, just get the motion of your fingers ingrained into you before you even try it on the guitar strings.

    • @neilchanmusic
      @neilchanmusic  Рік тому

      Haha I know! It's quite fun to apply flamenco rhythms to different harmonic progressions. Of course, we need to be discerning if it sounds palatable or just cheesey.

  • @amitgokhale3765

    Hey man great video series. I've been trying to use the flamenco technique on my steel string acoustic for while now but my finger nails get hurt (esp. during rasgueado, I use the middle down, thumb down, thumb up triplet technique). What do I do? :((

    • @neilchanmusic
      @neilchanmusic  3 роки тому +3

      That's normal, rasgueados aren't intended for steel strings and will shred nails in no time. You can work on the technique on nylon strings then transfer to steel strings. Another alternative which I do is apply some UV hard gel on your nails. It takes some patience and trial and error to get right, and you have to deal with strange looks from people who observe your done-up nails on just one hand :D

    • @amitgokhale3765
      @amitgokhale3765 3 роки тому +2

      @@neilchanmusic would lighter gauge strings help? Moving from phosphor bronze to silk and steel as well, probably. Also how long does the hard gel thingy last? Thanks for the help big time!

    • @neilchanmusic
      @neilchanmusic  3 роки тому +1

      I'm not sure if lighter strings will make much difference to be honest. As for the hard gel, if you're really good at applying and maintaining them they last as long as your nail takes to grow out. But normally they start to fall off after between 1-3 weeks. It really varies quite a bit from my experience, but the more you do it the better you get at applying it well.
