Giving Great Thanks to Mr Carlos Santana for his mention of Sonny Sadrock in his recent interview with Captain Lee.... Now i know why Carlos has placed Sonny in the same category as Jimi Hendrix and John Coltrane
Wonderful! At about this time I volunteered to pick up a guy at the airport, who was flying into D.C. for a music showcase. It was Michael Knuth. He had recently produced a Sonny Sharrock album. He popped a tape of Sonny into the car’s cassette player. My first time hearing Sharrock.
This damn-near brings tears to my eyes. You don't really see people play with such spiritual intensity hardly anymore. We are witnessing a man who is truly free when playing. Such a rare sight!
Mr Sharrock is the last jazz guitarist. Before him, Pete Cosey, Zappa and Hendrix could play guitar jazz. Most jazz guitarists have no idea what they're doing.
I remember when I first got wind that they [CZTV] were rebroadcasting these concerts from this tour. I patiently waited like 6 months for this one which of course was the last one. The night arrives and I was home alone my wife was back here in the states with her family. I think it was scheduled for like 2:40am. The big moment arrives and AAAAAGGGGGHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!! Interrupted for that day's Czech parliament proceedings!!! I probably woke up half the building! I started e-mailing CZTV the next day pleading with them to rerun it ASAP. They never responded but eventually they did rerun it.
@@allen-rp3gm my daughter spent 6 months in Prague doing film study. We spent a week in Prague starting at a top floor walk up near the big communication tower. We planned to spend 3 days in Prague and to travel but we never left. Just love the energy. It seemed to us that there was a lest a sub culture of art that is woven into the fabric. Street art, music in sub terainian grotto’s, of course the museums. Art so often seems to be a luxury item. In Prague it’s a necessity. We saw Adrian Belew at a club and that crowd was eating out of his hand. So enthusiastic. A hungry animal. So Adrian kept playing, and having seen him a few times I can tell you the connection of that kind of audience lifted his performance. Plus he spent about an hour just talking to people afterward. So I don’t know what the scene was like then but if we go back to 68 we know there is a power that seems to spring from the Czech people maybe going back to Charles and his university, to Jan Hus, to Milan Kundera and your choice of Vàclav Havel.. and especially someone like Sharrock the expression is a shared moment that can shake you out of your safe zone to reach for the infinitesimal. Carlos Santana told me to look for this and you should know that extra work you did to get this performance up comes from the root of appreciation that makes your city so amazing! Děkuji!

A lot of people only know Sonny for the noisy free jazz stuff, but I always enjoyed the more melodic side. He was a much more versatile player than we realize.
The first track is My Song, and around the 17 minute mark thats Venus/Upper Egypt, a medley of two tunes - the second starts at 19.10 - originally on Pharoah Sanders' Tauhid lp, which Sharrock played on (although these versions are quite different). Sorry, can't help with the rest. .
A lot of really moving melodic structure here, but he suffers Veron Reid'itis to a degree. I guess if I was less of musician I would miss that detail. I was just reading an article about him being considered the founder of Avante Garde guitar. I suppose its right thing to say these days.
Thanks to Space Ghost for introducing me to Sonny
He's really got his tone dialed in here, and would immortalize it the following year on the profoundly moving "Ask The Ages."
U got it....its his love supreme moment....

My god his tone is locked in and flabbergasting. No pedalboard is god-tier level playing. Sonny is one of the greatest to ever pick up a guitar.

Check out Tisziji Munoz sometime, another guitarist who plays with Pharoah, Rashied, Ravi, and other Coltrane associates. Free and on fire!

Seeing this lineup of Sonny Sharrock's perform live was one of the most memorable concerts I have ever experienced.
You’re so fortunate and lucky to have seen such legends perform
Agreed. I saw these gents at the Painted Bride in Philadelphia. Not sure if it was just before or after this European tour.
Awesome! Thanks for the post. Watching this concert in 2019 is the point of the internet.
