I had the pleasure of doing sound for him at a club in NYC around 3 years ago. The show was packed!!! We lost a beautiful soul but I'm glad we get to see him here. R.I.P.
Amazing!!, I came to Milford through Albert A and a picture of him somewhere in America eatly 70’s giving a performance from a flatbed truck. Devastatingly great image!! ❤️🌫🙏🏻
I love how the head of the mallet came off when he was hitting the gongs and he was like “ah, fuck it” and creates an explosion of sound with the severed mallet and the cymbals
Everyone's comments here are funny & correct, powerful stuff! Thanks for sharing this rare footage and thanks for the personnel there 23skidoo down below
Milford Graves solo hubo uno solo. Uno de los bateristas más originales de la historia. El sonido de África, profundo, visceral, descarnado. Un maestro de la improvisación.
I'm killing myself laughing right now because this is the FIRST video of Milford Graves I've looked up and while I wouldn't be surprised that this is exactly what he was doing, I also can't tell if this is one of those dubbed vids to make them sound like shit and i am DYING. Does it sound like a kid could do it? yeah. Does it sound like anyone other than incredibly skilled musicians could do it twice? no.
Many Free Jazz musicians were undiagnosed cases of ADHD. Mama don't let your children grow up to play Free Jazz. I'd rather have a colonoscopy. Don't get me wrong. I believe in liberty and the pursuit of noise, just not in my head.
keith might be considered overrated to some, but the way he played is seemingly impossible to copy. bonham on the other hand was doing licks 50 years ago that every drummer still references today.
MILFORD GRAVES left us today February 12th, 2021

One of the most magical 21 minutes of video on the internet
Joe Rigby (sax), Hugh Glover (sax, orgel), Art Williams (trompet), Milford Graves (percussie)
Thanks
This is one of the greatest and most astonishing jazz performances of all time
this is a special kind of free jazz
that's why Milford had to play with others i.e. John Zorn, Albert Ayler etc
What page of 'stick control' is this on?
there exists randomness, and then there exists the right kind of randomness
How many arms does one hear?

Siempre toco con esta, su única batería, que el mismo pinto a mano al óleo y con su silla metálica plegable de sala de espera.

What a bizarre thing. 🤮
This sounds like a horde of dying elephants
Goregrind is like Händel compared to this shit
I love how tranquil, calm and relaxing this music is. Just the thing for my anxiety... said no one ever.
and yet it is cathartic

Fuck you
overrated
Overrated would be John Bonham and Keith Moon, mediocre drummers at best and every boomer thinks they're drumming gods
