- Dave talks about the trucking industry making attempts to brainwash the truck driver community into thinking pay raises are forthcoming by most carriers in the near future.
What the carriers are offering in pay raises are mere pennies/mile, which in the end, results in very little net earnings increase.
Pay in and around 1980 was around $37,000/year. With proper cost of living index, around 2 - 4% yr, wages are not even close to what they should be.
Be very aware of the 'ads' in various trucking industry publications. Promises of sign on bonuses, higher mileage rates? Hmmm.... think again. Are these REALLY higher wages? These offers do not even come close to what they should be.
Carriers have a long way to go to be at the rate of pay that is a fair wage.
Dave does talk about a carrier in the province of Quebec, a long haul flatbed company who has started to pay their drivers by the hour when driving (a set wage) and a lesser wage, when stopped or tarping. If this carrier can do it, more can do it. They are just not willing to do it, so it does not cut into their profits.

Nice video.. I have been off the road 10 years now.. went with driving a bus for a Transit agency. People have asked me why would I ever stop driving a truck.. they think trucking is an episode of BJ and the Bear or Cannonball Run... Shit wages, loading dock waiting for hours making nothing, very little vacation time. I'd never go back even if I got fired tomorrow. Too bad the truckers cant band together and shut this country down until changes happen.. Be safe out there.

Jaysin Nunya so dam true if all truckers were to shut down completely for 24 hrs the industry would fall apart, think about no fuel at your local gas stations= nobody going to wrk unless you drive a prius or tesla, no fresh food at your local supermarket lol enjoy that canned food & now imagine if the truckers all shut down for a week it would devastate the economy but only truck drivers know this & the average person wouldn't understand how important trucking is until this actually happens, i think thats the only way truckers can make a point for higher wages because the dam brokers & dispatchers are taking half the $$ while we are to blame for being late to a appointment or an accident that wasn't our fault, we are sheeps among wolves & i only see it getting worse if we dont stand up for ourselves, they will keep taking advantage of us its so easy to blame the driver than the rest that are in the logistics market.

Do you get to stop the daily 11 hour clock, or any other clock, when waiting on someone else, not earning money, and not even getting to sleep? Or is the clock still ticking? What constitutes a legal reason to stop that clock, or can you, once it starts? If you wait 3 hours for a load to be ready at the start of your 11 hours, then another 3 at the end, you only got in 5 hours of driving, minus all the other delays.

Kim Behne I completely agree. I feel that you can get your point across effectively without the use of profanity. Those who use excessive profanity look like they are uneducated. Do they Kiss their mother with that mouth? You are correct. Dave is a perfect example of how to get a good point across without diarrhea of the mouth as my grandmother loves to call.

After being out of the industry for a year it is laughable at what companies are offering to come back. My time is precious to me and when I find a company that understands this I will return.
I drove a tanker for two years, that was enough for me, hardest job I ever had for the lowest pay, it was fun for awhile, but the fun wore off quick, like on payday when you looked at your check and tried to justify the work load and responsibility of driving chemicals and petroleum products around the country. No thanks!
Got SCREWED all 30 yrs. I drove OTR. Some companies used a dry stick, some with a lube, some places even gave me a kiss, but all poles had splinters as a reminder that 99.9% of drivers were looked upon as trash. If you were a complete brown-nosing suck up you'd do fine, the straight shot drivers didn't & still don't stand a chance. Here's a kick in the head, when I 1st started driving my wife was my seat cover for 6 months. She has never had any connection to the driving world. After those mos. as an observer more or less, she stated plain as day, that she'd never seen & experienced a more cut throat, backstabbing, two-faced industry that makes up the trucking industry. It is, was & will be for many many more yrs. To survive you need motion lotion in your blood & love the sound of grinding gears, the sound (only sound sometimes) of yer beating heart & the thrill of puttin' yer foot thru' the floor as you mash yer motor. The latter which is on the way out sooner than later looks to be. The industry of trucking has already rotted to it's core like a worm infested apple & with the save ourselves from ourselves crowd & the piss-ants on bended knees to kiss their butts in DC the ways of the road are soon to meet a hell fire end as the drivers are left to pick up the pieces of their destroyed lives! Sick & Sad...
Sadly, A LOT of employers are the same way. It's not just the trucking companies. They want the best employees but for very little pay or not fair market value. And they wonder why they have a difficult time finding workers. Because they are getting cheap.

You really think enough drivers will park their trucks long enough to make a difference? I don’t. The big companies have an out. They can hire lower experienced drivers at a lower wage by adding technology to trucks until full driverless trucks are here. Right now drivers are ok for another 5 to 10 years until the companies stop hiring, layoffs happen and lower pay comes. I do enjoy some of your videos and they spark thought which is good. Keep making them.

Smart-Trucking.com ....As someone who has studied propaganda (sales) , business, been a top 2% straight commissioned sales rep producer knowing first hand the incredible power of mind fucking tricks, read more material about business than 95% of people , I think this "driverless truck" information is another exaggerated story to make truckers worry. Fear is a proven tactic of control. I don't need to exaggerate and say I'm positive driverless trucks wont happen for at least 15 years. I'm NOT positive. But my track record for figuring out things virtually nobody else does is quite good. So my educated guess is this is at least 15 years away. People get fooled by so called fake facts the news pawns off with no penalty for being wrong like they are so often. So what that ONE car that's driverless has worked!.This bullshit works?! Let's see the lawsuits (Insurance companies can go out of business and will not leave any stone unturned about so called 'successful' testing of ONE lousy driverless car on a road.)that insurance companies want to risk paying when 200 million insured cars are weaving through traffic and pedestrians! What happens with 200 million driverless cars on the road versus one test car? And there's no way huge 40 ton semis are going to be as easy to perfect as cars. Here's one example of sales bullshit that got exposed and 99 out of 100 people won't even remember it or know it. Speed reading material was a huge success in the 70's. They sold people on being able to read an entire page in under 3 seconds if you buy the training materials! To this day, it was all a clever scam since nobody can prove it works. Me and my friend both tried it in the 70's as well as millions of others. Who got prosecuted for getting rich off this? Nobody. There are thousands of the same scams over the years. The sales tricks so often use FEAR. Basically they make people feel like they need to react to these claims. If they don't, they risk being passed up in the workplace by those who do. I really think driverless trucks (I also drove a semi for about one year and respect what it takes to be a good driver) are at least 15 years away. Just an opinion, but coming from a person who studies and analyzes and tracks my theories for accuracy all the time. There's already experienced drivers who quit because of fear since they can't afford to risk being unemployed for 12 months. See how fear works? How many experienced truckers who quit get to sue the media for fear mongering when there are not millions of driverless trucks on the road in 2020 or even 2023? They will never win a lawsuit unless they got a spare 2 million in their account to hire a top notch lawfirm...and the endless litigation for a new blockbuster high profile lawsuit will actually take well over 30 million to get any one of these huge comfort zone cherry picking top firms to even consider the political repercussions they are privy to contemplating they are risking with every high profile case. As a business savvy but very street smart person, I wish I could get away with the crap the media sells. I would retire rich selling pyramid scams to the public.....oops..but for some reason, when individuals scam people, only then is the fraud police interested. Huge corporations?!?!....its prosecuted less than 2% of the time.
@@jusayenso81865 autonomous truck companies have been delivering in Arizona since 2015. Barely in the news. Better yet and autonomous semi Chinese manufacturer has been in Tucson a couple years. Yes drivers may be in them for another 15 years but they'll be paid half what they are now
As I’m watching this, I’m being paid. Load was delayed by 5-6 hours so I have to wait. Good thing I’m getting paid by the hour. I couldn’t say that about my last company.
jholzer1989 I'm perhaps 2 weeks out from finishing my "on the road with a trainer phase". Once tested out and solo, $20/hr straight time. They told me pre hire they anticipate this position for me to be 50-55 hrs/week, home most night and weekends.
On duty = get paid just as if the truck is rolling. So it's up to me to be as efficient and productive tfor the company as possible, but it's nice to know the company also has a little extra incentive on their part to make sure I keep moving.
Because I can count 4 times in two weeks with shipper/receiver delays, truck/trailer mechanical issues no less than 24 total hrs of on-duty time wasted. Time my CPM based trainers didn't get much for. $95 for 10 hr breakdown pay. The other $45 for 7 hr breakdown pay.
As an hourly based driver, a 2000 mile week over (5) 10hr days = 50 hrs. $1000/2000 = $0.50/mile. At least 14 cents more per mile for a new hire CPM driver at this same company.
I would have to have a 2,777 Mile week at 36 CPM to gross $1000 (or 50 x $20).
jholzer1989 great for yu buddy im also getting hourly pay plus ot after 8 hrs or 40 hrs a week & dbl time after 12 hrs or over 60 hrs weekly whichever comes 1st (over $40 an hr on dbl time) delivering to CVS pharmacies its local home every night & most of my day im not driving im unloading, thats the way loacal companies should operate unless its drop & hooks but even then if yu hit traffic that means your getting less than minimum wage, sure they wanted a good driving record & 2 years experience but its well worth it plus quarterly saftey & on time bonuses= an extra $2k a year👍👍

100% brother!!! You know, the last year I trained for Swift, they made a $836 million profit. Not income, but profit. That's after all expenses and pay to drivers. I was so pissed when they gave us a 3¢ raise. That 3¢ raise only cost them around $25 thousand.
Central Transport was paying me and five other guys $2100 a week pulling turnpike doubles Cleveland to South Bend,IN. There's good paying jobs out there you got to keep your ears open and keep your record in good shape. Do your pretrips well and don't take short cuts.Weigh those loads if in doubt, you don't won't scale tickets to mark you with a bad record. Stay safe out there y'all!
A driver position is - for the most part - a one person job. $28/hour after 5 years may sound good, but a freight train conductor on the CN or CP railroad starts at $30+/hr, and are fully unionized, with complete benefits, and Railroad Retirement here in the states. After two years or so, most trainmen enter locomotive engineer training. After they qualify and get their locomotive engineer license, they will start at $48+/hr. These are 2-person crews.
I think of a flatbed driver, trying to tarp his/her load in freezing rain or whatnot, or a hopper bottom driver trying to get his load of DDG to come loose in the summer humidity, and that $28/hr after 5 years ain't nothing.
Brainwashing. Our current "president" wants us all to work without unions. That's so his multi-billion dollar donor buddies can continue paying drivers a pittance, while they buy a bigger yacht.

Supply and demand...how many truckers could be train conductors? That’s like comparing apples and tomatoes... Don’t get me wrong, truckers ARE underpaid, but Trump’s fault? Seriously? As long as there are drivers willing to drive for $30,000 a year...then that will rule. What is OOIDA doing? What are the drivers doing? What is your congressman doing? What did Obama do except Elogs? $20 per hour is NOT huge. That is about $40,000/year. Most first year drivers are near that with no CDL and no experience. Again, truckers are underpaid, but as soon as there are less people willing to drive for low pay, the money to drivers will increase.

Thank you for sharing. My husband is a General Contractor and he loves Trucking. I bought him a truck and trailor because it was his dream. After a few years when I became frustrated with my husband juggling both careers, I told my husband to choose trucking or construction. In my opinion Construction is the better career. We are an owner operator, but I do the financing and with all the California regulations It's not worth it. $21 an hour won't cut it in California. He charges $80 an hour for electrical and $30,000 for room additions. He did three room additions starting from September. We had his friend over today on Christmas and she argued with me that he loves trucking, and I told her then he should be single. I handle the financing and we live in Newport Beach, Ca. I welcome anybody that can give me proof that trucking can bring in $20,000 a month and still have a family life. I told my husband if he wamts to be a trucker then he needs to stay on the road consistently, so then why be married with a family? PLEASE let me know the reality of trucking and if my husband could realistically make at least $15,000 a month net worth. I am saying $15,000 a month after wear and tear and maintenance if truck & trailer, $2,000 upfront insurance fee plus $600 a month for 10 months, 2% cash advance fee and $15 fuel advance fee. State tax fees for driving on there roads and $450 a month to store his truck and trailer. We live in Newport Beach so we need to store our truck and trailor. As a business woman, I don't think the trucking business makes sence living where we live. Our mortgage alone is $3,500 a month plus $12,000 a year for property taxes. Please tell the truth because I love my husband, but I do not believe that trucking will bring in more funding then the construction industry. If you believe otherwise and can show me proof, please do. I want my husband to be happy but realistic. Thank you.
Very educational videos as always. I am so glad that there are people like you that see it for how it truly is. You are not afraid to call those people out on their nonsense. I appreciate honest people such as yourself. Without the drivers these carriers obviously would go belly up. Also without truckers, The United States and Canada is goods would just be piling up at the loading docks not going anywhere. Stay safe out there trucker.
with the ELD's it should be a snap to pay by the hour, they can see how many hours you work.
Most truckers I talk to are happy if they clear $1000 a week. That is really nothing if you are a otr driver. Maybe ok if local but with the current rates I am counting down my days till retirement in 2019.
Oh wow!! 3.6 cents per mile! Wow, that almost pays for the little bit of tire wear on one tire, shoot we still got 17 other tires we're paying for to plus other matainence as well!!! I guess the carriers expect us drivers to remain stupid.....

You did an excellent job identifying the problem. Unfortunately, decisions about whom to work for by individual drivers will not significantly improve the situation. Labor issues are not about companies doing the right thing. Corporations are formed first and foremost to enrich their stockholders. Employee welfare is at the bottom of their concerns even when they encounter hiring shortages. If they can bamboozle people into working for them without increasing wages and benefits, they will.
Even if a company tries to do right, less scrupulous companies will undercut them.
This comments thread will not like this, but the weakening of regulations and unions disempowered workers and played them against each other. They have the money and power. All we have is our numbers.

No it's over immigration and work visas. Just compare the 4000% increase in billionaires to the 2% increase in wages in the U.S. over the last 30 years to figure out who's behind it. Where can a carpenter and Plummer make 35+ 25/hour?

So lemme get this straight: noon to midnight is 12 hours and you get 50 bucks, right? $50.00 / 12 hours = $4.16 per hour. Then $100.00/day after 24 hours. Take 10 out for the DOT break and that's $100.00 / 14 hours = $7.14/hour. And this is their new and improved layover plan? :roll:
No wonder these companies can't find any drivers.

On a different topic Dave. three and a half years ago, you posted a vid in which you spoke on the subject of Team Drivers. I just watched it. I'd like to make a comment on the subject. For 25 years, I was an ambulance paramedic working here in eastern Ontario, between North Bay & Ottawa. Of the heavy truck accidents that my station responded to, along the Hwy # 17 corridor, 70% of these accidents involved transports operated by Team Drivers. Coincidence......I think not. In my previous vocation, SLEEP HYGENE as it was called was drilled into us. That is, making sure that the sleep we received was of a recuperative, quality type. Simply shutting your eyes for 8 hours won't cut it. The stats don't lie. KEEP ON , KEEPING IT HONEST DAVE!!!

When I drove teams for Yellow back in the day, I would knock out for an easy 10 hours every single day. Some of my co-drivers would ask me if they were bothering me or something, and it was never that I didn't want to hang out and talk with them, it was that I was looking out for both of our safety. My number one job is to get home safe. The pay and the rest of it is just bonus.
Steven Andrews I drove team myself, I had a few nights where I completely dozed off for 10+ seconds. Almost crashed on highway 17 at 3:30AM, I probably only got 2 hours of sleep during the day. Team operations should be illegal, it's so unsafe. I'll never do team in my life ever again.
I ran sleeper team for CF out of Seattle. My partner and I ran 8-10 hour shifts when a lot of other teams ran 5/5. Then they complain about being tired. We still averaged 6,000 miles a week with average 350 horsepower and 7 speed transmission pulling TRIPLES about 1/3 of time.
Agree 1000%. I get rested by SLEEPING until my body decides to wake up on it's own. With the gubmit and trucking company combined, telling me when to drive and when to sleep, whether I need to or not, is it fair to say that trucking is not for me? I'd probably be wide awake during my forced break and reset time, then ready to konk out as soon as that time is up, and not be able to safely drive when it's time to go cause I'm now dead tired and need to sleep after being awake for so long - driving, followed by NOT sleeping OR driving. My body tells me when I need to sleep, not the feds. I detect a potential problem here.
You've hit the freaking nail right on the head again Dave! When I first started researching the realities of this industry 10 years ago, I obtained every publication available at the time. I spoke with drivers at the 3 area truck stops for 3 years before I made the plunge. If I had relied solely on the garbage that this publication often prints under the guise of representing truckers, I would have been woefully prepared for the realities of the job. To be fair, there are stories in the mag and it's sister publication TRUCK WEST that are accurate, but too often the stories give you a biased opinion.

Most “news” stories are biased boarding on being “fake news” geared toward generating advertising dollars or readers. If you really want to look at a corrupt industry, look at news and advertising. That said, a company needs to recruit and will spin it as best they can, not unlike people who exaggerate their resumes or have not experience, criminal convictions, lots of bad decisions, and need a job under any circumstances that pays more than minimum wage. As long as they can drive, they can work. It is in-depth reporting and analysis sites and channels like this one that are rising up to fight back against the propaganda. Trucking is tough, but you can rise for a know nothing driver with no experience or license and build up to some serious money not found in other employment options. But face it, not everyone should be a driver. Some come in because they think it is easy money, a get-rich scheme. They always fail. If we keep putting out good knowledge, it will improve.

I don't know RVT. I remember thinking even back in the 90's, that man, this is the worst it can get, it can only go up from here. And 20 years later I've been proven way wrong! Past performance doesn't indicate future performance of course, but man, we have a lot of fixing to do. But it's not just trucking that's a mess in the world these days. Lots of changes are coming in many areas.

I just subscribed to your channel, I'm new to trucking I have been doing it for a year I like how you skip the B.S and get straight to the point with your videos and I find your channel to be full of good Viable information. I work Local for the time being I am also a crane operator I would definitely recommend this Channel to other new drivers like myself because even in the short time I have been in the industry I have seen for myself how these carriers treat their drivers and its only getting worse as time goes on. I think if more Veteran drivers like you came forward about the industry at some point these carriers may have to sing a different tune. Wishful thinking probably but with the shortage of drivers all across the board, id say their going to have to do more than tell stories If they wanna keep drivers pulling there loads there too many choices right now for good drivers to find work. The good news is if you get with one and you don't like it there's 10 more begging for you to come work so at least we have that going for us.

$28 dollars an hour ? Geez, even when I'm stuck in traffic ?! That's amazing. Other companies must follow suit. It's almost as if C.H. trucking is actually paying drivers as if theyre professional drivers ??? Pretty much converting my CPM to hrly pay I'm probably at about $15-20 wow.

Been driving just over a month and consistently doing over 600 miles daily since starting. kinda feel like i'm luckier than some of the others out there hearing your statement about a perfect day. Making 30 cents / mile, heard that is pretty shitty in the industry but the miles make up for it.

I was an o/o until 2004 and I always tried to get drivers to understand that pay by the hour is the only way. I am now a company driver we get $27 an hour ot at 50 hrs and we are always at 70 hrs per week home almost every night. I wouldnt have it any other way

i watch your videos to learn about trucking and the industry. i'm just a rookie but i'm one with open ears that doesn't allready know everything just because i've survived a year out here... my question to you is. what are we supposed to do about it? even though what you say is true and the pay out here is a joke in more ways than one... it's still a lot better income overall than a lot of jobs. compared to an owner op with his own authority or a driver with 20 yrs exp. i'm sure i make crumbs but in my first year as a company driver i made over 45k. is everyone supposed to just quit? should people keep there jobs flipping burgers or delivering pizzas because they at least get payed for all of their time but dont make enough to buy the pizza they deliver? lol should i tell my fleet manager the industry is a joke and they don't pay me enough so i'm going to go break my back in a factory for less than 20k a year? just curious what the "smart-trucking" thing to do is now that i know i'm brainwashed and everyone for the past 18 and a half years before me is brainwashed?
Stay in the industry, never stop shopping while you gain experience ,be sure before you jump ship and keep in mind how many hours you put in for the money you net, then subtract the road expenses. It may not be long before you trip across a factory job that pays better or a short haul job with nights at home. Dave
American Nomad i agree with dave on this one my 1st year i made less than 40k with a 1099 so i had to pay 5k in taxes =avg $35,000 take home but now in my 5th year driving with a good driving record & experience i got a local job that pays hourly & home every night(Penske that is contracted with CVS pharmacies & trader Joe's) ot after 8hrs dbl time after 12 hrs or over 60 hrs a week whichever comes 1st, last year i grossed over $65k with w2 & got almost $5k back from taxes, jus my 2 cents get your experience in then apply for a better company that pays hourly if you want local wrk or find a good company that pays at least .45 cpm(more if you got hazmat) for long haul. Most good paying companies dnt want a rookie driving for them due to insurance costs & they want to keep a good record with d.o.t.
I drive local now after getting screwed over everyday as a mileage driver. Anything over 40 is time 1.5 per hour now. So that being said a don't care how long it takes at the docks, traffic, weather. Very few days overnight, no $12 showers or fast to the grave food for me. Currently my company is down 40 plus OTR drivers and growing. Guess what no one is applying that can pass the drug test. How do I know that? my Wife works in HR department. People vote with there feet won't get better either. These mega carriers better push for driverless trucks.
I got marked late going to San Marcos, Texas because they shaved 100 miles off the destination and there was no way to make it in time.
They are penalizing you for miles that they are not paying you for in the first place!

I drove for eight years and simply got tired of the BS carriers, dispatchers, carrier CEO making a speech at orientation to which no one, including the already hired dispatchers et al could give a flyin' RA. It's all the same BS, day in and day out. Am not driving anymore but have to admit I miss driving trucks. But not going back, though. Good luck to you Truckers still running. Wish you all well. Best video EVER!!!! OTR mileage is 50 mph on logs. Period. This is not open for 25 million truck drivers to debate. 50 miles per hour is legal. DOT looks at any mileage over 575 miles logged as questionable. OTR driving is dying based on deep water port dredging in the Gulf of Mexico. The "wallets" will now stretch "regional" drivers to drive 2 weeks out for "off time." DRIVE LOCAL!!

James Schrader A conductor (American and Canadian English) or guard (Commonwealth English) is a train crew member responsible for operational and safety duties that do not involve actual operation of the train.
Also there is 3 months of training in Winnepeg Manitoba. That's a lot more then what most drivers get.

You make a very good point on hourly. I was O/O OTR 85-87. Terrible job then and only got worse every day till today. Trucking is a dead end street. I was Lucky, I went back to Oil n Gas, worked all over the world and made 6 figures every year. 2000-2014 retirement. I made 250-300 every year n slept in my own bed, no brokers, no stress, no logs........I wish u all had the same opportunity. You start talking smack about USXpress...well brother, let me give you some more fuel for this fire...in 2012, I joined USXpress in their L/P program...I struggled through it for 2 years, and at the near end of the lease, having gotten fed up with not making any money, I took the truck to Freightliner, and sold it. Now, fast forward to Feb. 2018, I re-hire, this time as a company driver, (opting out of the bus ticket, I drove my personal vehicle to orientation), I hire in at over 40cpm, suppose to have been actually I think, 41-44cpm, did all the hoop-jumping I was suppose to do, deliver on time and all, when I asked for time at home, they missed my request by 4 days (gotta squeeze a dollar out of a dime), and when I get home to look at my pay stubs, finding out they are paying me, a 20yr driver, 31cpm...I am infuriated. I know I have done the right thing when I cleaned out my truck today and quit, no bus ticket home was needed, as my personal vehicle was still at the terminal. Back in the hunt for a job.

You should talk about the "performance/safety" bonuses the big carriers promise. I've never known, myself included, anybody to actually get these bonuses because of some b.s. reason or it's based on the entire company and you know the odds of something happening to screw the deal.

Why lower the hourly wage to do the physical work of loading & unloading. Now that's a great hourly wage. Why not leave it for the whole time you are on duty. I once figured what I made into an hourly rate that I made once I left the house until I got back home & it was less than minimum wage. Now this was years ago & the minimum wage at that time was $2.50 per hour. Damn I was getting rich, lol. If they are going to pay an hourly wage it should be the same hourly rate for all work while on duty. Just my thoughts. It's great that a company is stepping up to the plate to pay a real wage.

They are not going to pay 20 hours on a 10 hour run. They don't want to pay top $ for a layzee basted to tarp a load or watch a fork lift guy load you. I pull a tank locally and make more than you by the mile super slab gear jammers do day by day

Mega carriers are so professional that they can professionally lie.
$50000 sign on bonus translates into "We will give you X money every 6 months to a year provided you take our crap for 5 to 10 years" also I have never seen a company pay a couple pennies more per mile without costing you 2 or more hours a day with delays, switches, appointment times and traffic on top of shorter runs. Not worth it. As for overall pay, I made $51000 in 1998 before I took a long break. Now I am lucky to make $70000. Keep in mind a house cost $150,000 then and $400,000 to $450,000 Now.

I fell for that bs thirty years ago. By the end of one year of driving I was no better off than a factory worker. What they don't tell you, is sitting doesn't pay you. Sit for more than one day you are getting screwed.
You pay for food, maybe a room in a truck stop. Driving is a no win proposition.
I quit found a job in a factory paying $ 14.00 per hour and was home every night.
If you are going to drive, make sure you are reimbursed for any and all training that you pay for any student loans you take out. That your health insurance is all company paid. Paid vacation time. And that your allowed to take your family from time to time.
Yup I came off the road to run local longest run is 600 round trip started 18.50 by end of 1st year at 20 an hr I’m 5 years in still at 20 hr about 3 months ago they said were are going to give you more pay so we went from hr pay with an average of 48 to 52 hrs a week to 50 to 58 hrs a week on mileage stop and load pay .42 miles 32 load 18 stop we all say it’s to get out of paying overtime so I’m working more for same pay when you break it down
you are right I am from canada and been driving for over 20 years and these guys advertising is always in that paper so making 50 dollars per day you got to drive for 11 hours without stopping so like i said truck driving is only a meal ticket.

Mileage base pay has always been a scam. Hire a contractor to build a house and pay him/her for just installing the two by fours and not the siding,flooring,roofing foundation etc and see what happens.

Why don't the actuaries post the cost per mile to run common trucks? I would have stayed on the job if I could have made a dollar. After seven years I was no better off than the day I started.

100% correct! Besides the $21 per hr and $18 for strapping, on duty time, that's only $1200-1300 a week before taxes and your not home at least 2 weeks probably AND flatbed! And $28 ONLY after 5 years might be your top pay 👎👎
