This was the first time I have seen this problem. I charged them for the trans service the first time. I did not charge them for the comeback because I should have known better. And it was a learning experience for me as well. I always try to learn from my mistakes.
your customers must realy like how honest you are, so many mechanics out there would have told the customer they had to drop the trans to change the torque converter seal or something like that to cover the honest mistake.
Great video....I'm a tune up/oil change-"basic specialty tools guy" when it comes to fixing cars and did this job myself. If you're handy AND patient, this is a DIY job. MAKE sure you have that 7 mm deep socket and the proper adapter for your ratchet FIRST. Hands down, the best video I found for this problem. After dealing with a leaking transmission for 3 years+ (having replaced the trans gasket already and giving up), I'm happy that I can park in my driveway again without a pan!! Thank you for posting - PS- local mechanic quoted me $840 for this repair; the part is $12-$15 online, maybe a bit more at your local auto parts store (don't get ripped off if you think you can handle it).
Thank you for this info. Changed my pan gasket yesterday and drove it around checking for leaks while driving. It stayed dry. Sat overnight and leaks again. It did seem it was coming from the location of this plug. Going to napa tomorrow to get a plug and cross my fingers. Thank you sir!
Thank you! This is a great video for doing this job. Just did this on a 2007 JGC Laredo 3.0L with the Nag1. Dorman 917-505 is the part I used. I put a very light coat of MolyKote Light 44 on the o-rings - everything went back in easy with no effort. Have some wiring loom handy - as that stuff just crumbles when you touch it - for the harness.
This is a very common problem with this mercedes transmission, known as the 7.226 for mercedes. Its not neccecary to pop the cap on the electrical connector as shown in the video as the leak comes from the connector housing with the two orings that fits in to the trans housing. You have to be very careful when tightening the bolt as its only 7 newton meters of torque. If you over tighten it you will break the threaded part of the conductor plate inside the trans and you will have to remove the
I think its gonna save me from not only one of those but my wife. Just bought an extremely nice higher mileage one owner 08. Everything is mint but Im having a slight leak from tbe back of the pan. Its always been serviced but im 100% sure this is the issue
Just fell into the same hole, except i was double checking mine and found it still leaked. BUT i would have taken the pan back off to replace the connector..You did save me that much.. thanks for sharing
New sub!! I have an appointment w dodge dealership in 48hrs for this exact work to be done I can't do I don't have the tools and I'm not a mechanic. The total labor cost $112. I've had this leak from my 07 jgc sporadically (red oil)for the last 1.5+ yrs i always thought it was "thin" or "worn" gasket so I was told by a local shell mechanic here in California but a little internet research lead me to this video and it's super common problem w this model vehicle as you've mentioned. I purchased the part from auto zone for $8.99. I will write an update here soon after I get it fixed! Thank you again sir for making this very helpful video and saving me and other fine folks 6-7-8 hundred dollars that my local mechanic quoted me here. 😬 to be continued...
Update! So this was done like I mentioned around 2016ish SD Ca Dodge dealership ($116) plus the part. I had around 120K mikes back at the time. Fast forward 5 yrs later 2021 she just hit 196K miles and 0 leaks!
Awesome video For some of you who think it is only this Jeep that doesn't have dipstick ,most newer cars do not come with it.Chevy Cavalier,VW Golf,Toyota Camry and the list goes on. Thank you Duane
Thank you great video I recently bought a 08 grand Cherokee changed the trans oil gasket and after a couple of hours a leaked alot of oil this is the NXT thing in going to check
i have a customer that has a damaged harness side of connector. trying to de pin the connector with the tab out and the wires will not release. know some guys at the local dodge dealership and no one knew how to remove. is there a special trick
i have this problem, i see in your video you have the black connector that the wires goes into, i need that connector cuz the dealership cant find the part number, there new 13 pin piece doesnt come with that. do u have a part number on that.
That 13-way connector is known for leaking. The part is usually less than thirty bucks at a dealer. I've replaced a number of them myself, typically charge an hour's labor. As for what that connector is for, it's the main entry point for the transmission wiring, allowing the PCM/TCM to control the transmission shifts.
Mercedes calls that connector a pilot bushing and they leak all the time on the 722.6 transmissions. One thing you have to be aware of is that the transmission fluid will wick up the wire insulation and if the leak is left long enough, the fluid will reach the transmission control module causing it to short out and cause all sorts of weird issues.
I tried this with jeep lifted on regular jacks and could no complete job, I found impossible to push the new connector enough for the bolt to engage in the thread, it took me about a day to realize i am either not strong enough or lack the knowledge of technique to put more pressure on it to snap it in all the way.I suggest people not to try this without being able to lift truck overhead to properly apply pressure on the connector, so I had to put the new connector without the big "o" ring which snaps very easy this way, and having to send jeep commander in tow truck to a shop for a 10 minute job, just put back the big o ring and push strongly back in and reconnect . sad.....
how about doing the fluid check as specified, up to temperature. then leaving it overnight on correct level. then check next day to get a cold reading for future
I bought mopar part it wont let you tighten bolt like not in enough old one goes in ok o rings seem to hold it out they were lubed, put new o rings on old part same problem put old parts back leak not fixed of course , tryed pressure while tighting. bolt not touching to draw in
This transmission is also in the Chrysler 300c,300s,Dodge Magnums and Chargers.Did encounter this problem once so far and it was that connector leaking. The dipstick from Miller tool,Chrysler's specialty tool maker is $72.00.
I have a 2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo 2wd and it drips transmission fluid at the rear yoke seal even after a new seal is installed in it ? I cant figure out why ...maybe too much fluid in it I'm hoping
just remember that the o-rings on the larger connector may be a special size, and geting that oem piece might be the only way to get 'em. Thank you engineers for making it harder to work on your own vehicle, thus taking away some pride of ownership.
NAG1= New Automatic Gearbox 1st generation. This problem is common to the Chrysler Crossfire, Dodge Magnum R/T, Chrysler 300C, Jeep Grand Cherokee. All of these vehicles use the NAG1 transmission. I have changed many of these connector O-rings. This job is much easier to do on a car. The Jeep is the hardest one.
Don't forget the Mercedes name for this, the 722.6. So this problem effects the W210, W211, and other Mercedes models from the time that use this 5 speed box.
Do you have any ideas on how to fix my problem on a 2001 jeep cherokee the fuel injector on the number 3 cylinder i think it is , it starts missing sometime when i start it after sitting and while it is hot, i was told something about the intake was made to were the fuel injector is too close to manifold? can i buy a different year intake and change it? will that work? or can i fix that one?
Is the bell housing behind that? Was it lookig like it had teansmission fluid on it as well? I think I have the same problem, on my 04 jeep i thought there was 2 0 rings u only repaced one. Could you not just buy the 0 rings?
Dan Williamson I have the same appointment w dodge dealership in 48 hrs! How did yours go? Anymore leaks? How much oil were u loosing? Total parts n labor cost? Mine I paid $8.99 parts & will be $112 for total labor.
Well as you can see its a year ago now, but............... The leak was a lot it was not acceptable. It was as was suspected from the 2 o rings on the main input socket, nothing to do with the sump gasket it cost £220 total don't forget I am in England so this is pounds stirling. thanks Dan
hi Dwayne just kinda a heads up on the part you replaced. that 7mm screw where it threads into the trans is a very small bushing in the electronic of that trans just above the valve body it. Be sure the trans is cold when removing because that bushing can come lose from the electronic causing the screw just to spin and it will not come out. so the the problem gets worse. The 1 cent bushing turned into about 400$ for the circut board. so the pan has to come out and the valve body just to replace
Deep socket is bad idea, the screw has no flange, so it "falls" into the socket .I was able to work around this issue by sticking 9/32 dia plastic rod into the socket well. This helped me to push on the screw head while turning and it was driven in less than 25 seconds:) www.toyotanation.com/forum/8-general-discussion/1292513-chrysler-300-repair-20-minute-job-became-endurance-testing.html
I need help. I torqued the adapter center screw too much and now the 7mm hex head spins. How do I remove the adapter now? Can I turn the screw somehow if I pull the hex head off? Could I break the adapter into pieces and then replace it with a new one? This must have happened to someone else somewhere. That screw is small and the 7mm head is big!
not to be an ass, but, I don't shot any of my diagnoses. I always verify the cause. So, did you credit your customer back for that good part you replaced? Plus, that pan gasket, if i remember is a re-useable type.
Hey Dwayne i always had this question, do the customers actually watch this videos?, and how do they react when you say that is gonna be filmed? I watch all of them :P sry a bit off topic
no mechanic can fix 100% of vehicles 100% of the time , statistically it is impossible, Duane is a terrific mechanic with logical thinking and tons of training that if even 1% of vehicles are comebacks, he is doing a terrific job! The NAG 1 trans. on Jeeps and Chrysler 300's that sensor leaks all the time, the o-rings deteriorate quicker than most and the new sensor with new o-rings are an " updated " part according to Chrysler .
love how they give you all the room in the world to work with --- i wish those engineers had to do this work 50 times themselves before signing off on these pain in the backside jobs.....maybe then they might figure out something a little easyer to do....
Cant check? First time I encountered this, it was on the weekend, after the dealer was already closed, so I had to fashion my own dipstick tool out of a hard nylon suction tube, putting marks from the end, up to about 100mm. This dipstick is a funny design because you actually insert it until the tip hits the bottom of the pan, remove, & inspect how many cm/mm up the stick the fluid is. simple. I agree, its a stupod design, but if you blow a trans because ALL the oil is gone, thats all you.
That's the thing - the customer wasn't paying to replace the housing - he/she was paying to fix the leak. Likely the customer knew nothing about the connector housing. If changing the o-rings fixes the leak, then so be it - that's what the customer was paying for.
Ive had this happen to me, my friend's 08 3.7 Grand Cherokee and he went to his other buddy and all he did was reseal the oil pan. I found that the o-ring on whatever that thing is called ripped. Oil pan gaskets are 85% of the time are not the source of a leak but techs think they are. Especially that big of a leak, shit gets overlooked and like you had here.. Comeback
What people should do is file lawsuits against these jackazzes, every time a transmission gets burned up, from not being able to check the fluid. Time to put a stop to all the non sense.
Dang Germans and their over-engineering. There is this German guy on youtube who does a vintage audio channel and he complains about the stupid din plug system on stereo equipment. One thing Americans got right is the dip stick and rca plugs.
I dont get why some techs lie & cheat. I have ALWAYS been 100% truthful too ALL my customers.....you see, I didnt break their car, so why would I lie? it costs a certain amount to fix that failure, which is looked up in a labor guide. Then again, ALL my business is from word of mouth, best advertising there is, because people dont tell others to go to a shitty mechanic. that being said, I have happy customers for life, and new ones each week, all because I dont lie or cheat. Business is great!!
i never saw a dipstick like that 5 ft long monstrosity leave it to mercedes and dodge to take something simple and turn it into an allday job or 300 bucks to check the fluid level....man give me an old fashioned 4 speed any day.......
Okay... So you come in here, calling people names with foul language and general lack of any kind of consideration - and you call *me* a troll? Mmhmm... Well - let's just end it here. I don't care what you think of me, and I could *not* care less about your kids' tricycle. I maintain my own car, as well as my family's and neighbors vehicles - with no complaints. I let my actual work speak for me. That is all.
This was the first time I have seen this problem. I charged them for the trans service the first time. I did not charge them for the comeback because I should have known better. And it was a learning experience for me as well. I always try to learn from my mistakes.
Respect to you for owning the err of your ways (lol)
I always thought a NAG 1 was a long term spouse!! Learned something new today!!
I just love it when the old guys say use the "feel method" lol
Thanks very much for posting this video. Yours is one of only a few I've found to be easy to understand and follow - and filmed well. Thank you again!
your customers must realy like how honest you are, so many mechanics out there would have told the customer they had to drop the trans to change the torque converter seal or something like that to cover the honest mistake.

Hi Direct241, what is the name of this part? I cannot seem to find it online via party stores....
I meant 'part stores'
Clear,simple and precise. Good tutorial
Thanks Derek for adding your information. It helps us all with this problem.
Thanks Andrew for adding your comments. It's help like yours that enables us all to be better techs.

Very helpful. thanks for your videos.
Thanks for all the great videos! I check UA-cam religiously, waiting for new ones.
This video saved me from a scam artist transmission mechanic who claimed i needed a new trans.. Thank you for informing us all!!!
Glad it helped, thanks for your comments

Hi PMC05, what is the name of this part? I cannot seem to find it online via party stores....
@terence Johnson 68021352AA is the OEM part #... however.. i'm not sure if you have to purchase additional orings for the connector itself

I was about to sale my jeep due to the same issue Atf leakage. Thanks for your video alot of knowledge. You have helped alot.
Great informative video, thank you. 😊

as always best mechanic on youtube
i can't get the screw to tighten down?
Put a little vaseline or similar on plugs new ring. Makes it easier to lock in plug

Excellent video. NAG1 appears to be an appropriate name if it's that difficult to simply check the fluid.
I did not know that was even there. I heard a clunk 4 months ago. Thought it was internal. I will clean and look. Thanks. slow leak; 92 4.0 cherokee
Thank you for this video.. I have the same problem with my 2005 grand cherokee 5.7 . Atf leaking..
Was it ever mentioned what that connector is for? I'm curious.
Well done ... had to have been a real pain to get at ... and need to buy a dipstick and a scanner to check the fluid level ... completely ridiculous!
What's powertrain is this for?
I have a 2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo 2wd and it drips transmission fluid at the rear yoke seal even after a new seal is installed in it ? I cant figure out why ...maybe too much fluid in it I'm hoping

I wan to know the name of that part some one here know?
Nice vid I'm also having same problem with my jeep this vid helpful. Can you tell me the name and parts plz. Ty
Duane, did you charge the customer for the original repair?
good one
hey trying to figure out why my 94 jeep Laredo transmission wants to drive off when started but shifter shows park any ideas?
BTW email me Jeremy.r.perdue @gmail.com with ur answer if any been months need help
Wow good video how much does this cost in labor

Imo, just stick a magnet on the back of the ratchet and it'll come right off and onto your hands nice and calm lol
I need help. I torqued the adapter center screw too much and now the 7mm hex head spins. How do I remove the adapter now? Can I turn the screw somehow if I pull the hex head off? Could I break the adapter into pieces and then replace it with a new one? This must have happened to someone else somewhere. That screw is small and the 7mm head is big!
lockwpa I'm in the same boat. What was your fix?
not to be an ass, but, I don't shot any of my diagnoses. I always verify the cause.
So, did you credit your customer back for that good part you replaced? Plus, that pan gasket, if i remember is a re-useable type.
How did the owner know how much to fill the oil without a dip stick.
What is the name of the part? I've tried searching for it with the box information on the video but I'm having a hard time finding it.
Its called a Trans Plug Adapter. Part # D78444C or try Dorman 917-505
Great video my 2006 is leaking trans fluid . Where is your shop? I bring it to you if in Hudson valley area N.Y
Hey Dwayne i always had this question, do the customers actually watch this videos?, and how do they react when you say that is gonna be filmed? I watch all of them :P sry a bit off topic
I have leak in my 2011 grand Cherokee I’m hoping it’s just this that’s the problem thank you
good vid
My husband changed that part (pilot bushing) the leak has stopped but now my transmission only stays in 1st gear? any ideas...
Probably left transmission fluids in there make sure to clean it out good with air and add fluid
May I know
Where's your sho located?
Thh valve body to repair it. As a mb tech for over 10 years ive seen this many times
So why not just change the O-rings instead of the whole part ?
no mechanic can fix 100% of vehicles 100% of the time , statistically it is impossible, Duane is a terrific mechanic with logical thinking and tons of training that if even 1% of vehicles are comebacks, he is doing a terrific job! Value.
7mm bolt wont grab, i think housing isnt going in far enough. Stumped.
Qué tamaño tiene el oring
Well . . . Let's hope that Chrysler does not sell out to Hugo next. You may find the transmission dip stick port under the hub cap! LOL
I think that you should refund them the first bill and charge them the 2nd one, fair enough !
That's the thing - the customer wasn't paying to replace the housing - he/she was paying to fix the leak. Likely the customer knew nothing about the connector housing. If changing the o-rings fixes the leak, then so be it - that's what the customer was paying for.
I don't think I will ever buy one of these Jeeps if I can't easily check my transmission fluid level at home.
that simple job just turned into a nightmare speaking from experance

i never saw a dipstick like that 5 ft long monstrosity leave it to mercedes and dodge to take something simple and turn it into an allday job or 300 bucks to check the fluid level....man give me an old fashioned 4 speed any day.......
