Book: The Mouse that Roared (featuring the Duchy of Grand Fenwick). A micronation declares war on the United States hoping to be defeated so they can rake in US reconstruction dollars (like the Marshall Plan). Also an excellent film starring Peter Sellers.

In terms of music from other nations, I would highly recommend checking out the offerings from Quebec, specifically from the 1960s and 1970s. Most of them are sung in typical Quebec French, which differs significantly from Parisian French. Sometimes the lyrics are punctuated by an anglicized hybrid of Quebecois French, often with double meanings, particularly in the music of Robert Charlebois. I lived in Montreal, Quebec for roughly 20 years, and though I realize Quebec is part of Canada, the culture there is totally unique and separate from the rest of the country. Most people who classify or rate Canadian music completely ignore music from Quebec, as few know the language and also because the Quebec culture is very localized and somewhat isolated. In fact, most musical artists from Quebec are better known in France than they are even in Ontario, the province immediately adjacent to Quebec on the west.
The song I would recommend is 'Vert' by Harmonium, though I could have picked dozens of other songs by dozens of other great artists. Besides Harmonium, I would recommend listening to the music of Robert Charlebois, Louise Forestier, Beau Dommage, Gilles Vigneault, Diane Dufresne, Jean-Pierre Ferland, Garolou, Fabienne Thibeault, Claude Dubois, Offenbach, and the spiritual grandaddy of them all, Félix Leclerc. Admittedly, understanding the language helps a lot. Nevertheless, there are so many masterpieces sprinkled throughout the work of these special singer-songwriters that it's well worth the research.
"Gens du pays, c'est votre tour
De vous laisser parler d'amour" - Gilles Vigneault

This video was amusing and informative. As for music, "Descarga de la Luz" by Orquesta de la Luz, a Japanese salsa band (you read that correctly). And they do sing in Spanish, learning lyrics phonetically as I recall. Tito Puente guests on the track. I think it's killer. The band retired a while back, which is unfortunate.

Hello! So there could be a variety of reasons why a country wouldn't recognize another, usually emerging from regional conflicts. In the case of Kosovo, something interesting happens. Among the countries that don't recognize Kosovo are Spain, Romania and Greece. This happens because they all have some territories that ask for either autonomy or independence from the main state. Catalonia just had a referendum for independence 7 years back, proceeding to declare their own independence for a short while, The Szekely Land in Romania has also been manifesting their desire for autonomy for a while now and for Greece... Well, one could argue that Kosovo is for Serbia what North Macedonia is for Greece. So these countries wouldn't want to recognize Kosovo due to the fact that they would set a precedent that could further increase the tensions regarding the relationship with their territory.

I just read your comment, and as a Greek citizen I want to correct you . Greece not officially recognizing Kosovo has nothing to do with North Macedonia, but everything to do with Turkish occupied Northern Cyprus, which uses kosovo's case together with Turkey for their recognition as a country 50 years after their military invasion and illegal occupation of North Cyprus. Another point of possible conflict is in the Greek region of Thrace , where Muslims (ethnically is a mix group, but the majority of them identifies as Turkish - under international agreement is recognized as a religious minority , not ethnic), may be used as a pretext for a Turkish military invasion of my country. See the recognition of a region as a "country" can open up more than an innocent can of worms...

@@manpetepetrop8034 I get it, but wouldn't Kosovo claiming independence be more equivalent to Northern Cyprus saying it wanted out from under Turkey, considering it is Turkey that occupied it like Serbia held Kosovo?

In the Maghreb region, we have a problem called Western Sahara. It's mainly recognized by Algeria, its sponsor, and only recently many countries revoked recognition and added it back to Morocco. It is a huge problem because it made the entire Maghreb region fragmented over politics and unable to cooperate together economically despite the fact that people in the Maghreb have so much in common from history to language to traditions and culture. Especially Tunisia Algeria Morocco Western Libya. Even today, Morocco and Algeria have closed militarized borders and both people cannot travel to each other by land. That's my example of how such a thing could have terrible consequences for everyone.

Two African novels I recenly read set in fictional countries. Glory - NoViolet Bulawayo: Set in Jidada, which is basically Zimbabwe, but all the inhabitants are animals. It's Animal Farm meets Maus. Also, Bound to Violence - Yambo Ouologuem. Set in Nakem, which, again, is bascially Mali. The story behind the novel is as inrteresting as the books itself. It's only just been reissued in English after being supressed for nearly 50 years.

I think there are lots of literary fictional countries, especially in futurist writings. The first two that came to mind were Panem and Lilliput.
I have to agree about, The Handmaid’s Tale. I could see the points she as trying to make. And while I disagreed with her POV, the book was so well written that is wasn’t heavy-handed or overly preachy and just enjoyable. The same could be said for 1984. And while I haven’t read all of the Narnia books I’ve heard they have a message. Perhaps it’s more obvious in the later books because I didn’t see it.

Military power is a huge factor, both for obtaining independence and for preventing being pushed around by bigger countries which like pushing everyone else around like the USA does. If you can't stop the USA couping your government or dictating your policies, then you aren't really independent and aren't really a country, no matter how much local nationalists may get aroused by their flags. So that thing at the end about the difference between countries and regions getting blurred risks whitewashing the difference between nation-states and provinces of the world empire. Only militarily independent states (e.g. having no US military bases on the territory, or there with the clear understanding that you have the strength to kick them out at will if you want to) can enter into truly free treaties and trade relationships on the basis of mutual respect and equality, rather than as client states or puppet states being given orders about treaties and trade. Globalism or Imperialism? Usually there is no difference.
So I'm very against separatism and the creation of small states out of bigger states, because smaller states inevitably have less military independence and therefore less political, diplomatic and economic sovereignty. Sovereignty being preconditional for democracy, because the people do not rule themselves if their country is effectively ruled by the rulers of another country, then smaller countries are also less able to have democracy, let alone popular sovereignty as such. And no, I do not trust in the good intentions of free trade zones and international corporate committees like the EU and the WTO to make things better for anybody except transnational corporations and bankers.

An example of a country that doesn't exist - The Murrawarri Republic. The long and short is that the Murrawarri people live in Australia, and they were never conquered, they never signed any treaty subordinating them to the British Crown or (later) the Australian Government. They just live on the continent that everyone agrees is the country of Australia. So, after requesting documentation showing war had been declared against them in the past, or they'd signed a treaty at some point, or they'd ceded sovereignty at some point, and receiving no response from the Crown, the Republic declared that it was a "continued Free and Independent State, in line with International law and covenants".
The Murrawarri Republic is not recognised by any country, and appears to claim more than three-fold the are understood by both other Aboriginal groups and the Australian government to be the historical extent of the Murrawarri people. Making the whole conversation a lot more complicated, both for the Murrawarri Republic, and any other indigenous groups that might seek independence.

I'd argue the exact opposite. Nations are about your allegiance, to the flag, the values and everything one's country is about. Countries are not about 'democracy', that is a negligent thing to say. There are various systems of governing and democracy is just an idea that gets swirled on the system, a cute idea but never fully reached. No country is democratic at the end of the day, that's why an index score exists and why the last few years were described grim for those countries claiming to be 'democratic'...

It's nation states that have improved the lives of their peoples massively over the past centuries when they developped. History is proof you need a country to make things better in.

'1984' is really England under Soviet Rule. The Ministry of Fear is the Senate House you can see from Russell Square where Orwell worked in the War for the BBC in room 101. 1984 was inspired by Jack London's 'The Iron Heel' & 'We' by an Eastern European Writer.

And he wanted to call it 1948, but they thought that was too controversial.

5:25 sovereign: you have the last word on all your laws and taxes and there is no one higher up who can interfer.
Which mean UN should not reconize every EU countries then. 🤓

No, because each single member can decide that a given EU law is against the sovereign countries constitution and reject to ratifi it. Eu are only able to make laws for areas where the single members parlament have accepted it.
