  • With plenty of violence and mature themes, these superhero cartoons are definitely not meant for kids. For this list, we’ll be looking at the most mature animated movies and TV shows in the genre. We won’t be counting shows like “Batman: The Animated Series” that had adult themes but weren’t strictly made for older audiences. Also, beware of spoilers ahead. Our countdown of the most adult superhero cartoons includes “Invincible” (2021-), “Justice League Dark: Apokolips War” (2020), “Batman: The Dark Knight Returns” Parts 1 & 2 (2012-13), “Hellboy: Blood and Iron” (2007), and more! There are 4 that I know of:
      - *Close Enough*
      - *The Dating Guy*
      - *Duckman*
      - *Spicy City*
Also Teletoon used to air a series of bumpers called *Lolita Lolita* which, contrary to the title, featured a red headed woman that got into some(times) cartoonish situations. ^_^

Todd McFarlane’s Spawn deserves the top spot on this list. The show literally pushed the boundaries for an animated series by showing things that were never seen in cartoons before, and boy did it deliver in every episode. I pray we get a continuation one day so Spawn can get a proper conclusion.

No joke I found this in my mom's VHS collection in the late 90's, I watched it upstairs one time (I loved the animated Mortal Kombat, so I gave it a shot) not even 20 minutes in a gang leader is raping and killing a girl.. I remember a guys are getting ripped off and someone writing on the walls in an alley with it, the sound of the bone scraping the walls made me sick as a kid..

#1 time: In the 90s the only tools to watch this were videos and TV: Streams didnt exist. Downloading would have been too expsensive and even PC hardware had to struggle. I still remember my first PC somewhere in the mid 90s, that couldnt even run mpegs properly...
#2 less "weebs". anime still was considered a "kids thing" in western countries and kids growing up in the 90s changed that, who are adults now. And yeah, obviously they couldnt buy it and werent the audience for this series. I actually wondered how anything adult themed was made into anime form anyway before the 2000s. I still have PTSD from "Watership Down" which was running during day time. Watched it during my single digit years and yeah, it was shocking for a kid...
So what happened, it didnt make enough money and they had to cancel it or Pamela didnt want to voice anymore? Probably the first. ^^

I stumbled on to 'Stripperella' flipping through channels one night with one of those 'what the hell is this' moments. And while I don't remember much beyond the name and the basic design of the character and hero costume - I do remember liking the idea of a superhero stripper because honestly - it was just so different. I mean - there's how many millionaires/billionaires, scientists, you have acrobats, reporters, soldiers, diplomats, a few cops/ex-cops, students, a lot of 'typical' jobs that so clearly make it easy to be one cause all the money to live or puts you in a position to do both at the same time, or are some past thing where it's almost part of the tropes. Stripper is just so left field by comparison and it's actually great, especially if you were to have a Bruce Wayne or Tony Stark do a double take and point out that some people have to actually work for a living and aren't super geniuses (or perhaps she is and it's an easy way to fool people in to thinking she isn't cause people assume things).
Given the legal past they'd likely have to change the name, maybe character design and all, or just out right make a new character/characters - but it'd be interesting to see Marvel (since it was a Stan Lee thing) if they actually had the marbles or more likely DC since they seem less concerned about ticking people off run with the idea even if they had to make it a bit more tame like it's a bar where certain amount of clothing stays on (cause those do exist) and what not.

"Harley Quinn", "Striperella", and "Invincible" are the only ones I know on this list. I learned about number seven and one from another video, but didn't know what shows they were. I have seen trailers for "Invincible"! Also, I didn't know "Harley Quinn" was an adult superhero cartoon. It does suck how some on this list were the shortest running series! I haven't seen any of these shows on this list. I'd like to check them all out! They seem like great shows! Also, the ladies in these shows looks so nice!😍

Surprised that the Son of Batman animated movie wasn't on this list. That's a pretty brutal movie, I'm pretty sure. Haven't seen it yet, but I'm looking forward to watching it and Under The Red Hood one of these days.

One animated series or movie that comes to mind is "Gen 13". Originally created by Jim Lee the comic book was adapted into a movie that depicts how the team came to be. Only showing three characters evolution the movie also saws The voice talent of Mark Hamill as the main villain. It might have been drawn in the same style as the Justice League series but in no way is it kid friendly.
Another one I can think of is the series called Titan maximum which is more of a spoof of the classic Voltron and power Rangers aesthetic. Old claymation stop motion and with vulgar humor that had a cliffhanger at the end of the series. It was originally on adult swim.
I do not know if you would consider anime to be on the list but one that also I hold dear to my heart is Bio-booster Armor Guyver.
Cyber 6 could have been on this list if it was not toned down for kids.
When did superheroes movies especially animated movies became so Gory?
I don't know if you guys even remember but wasn't the anime Marvel shows more adult? It was a iron man, blade, wolverine, and an X-Men anime which actually was in my opinion more adult as well. You can't forget punisher and black widows staying alone movie and iron Man technovore movie. Heck the ultimate avengers movies will probably more adult as well. Not sure if you guys are aware of these titles but Stan Lee worked on a animated movie called condor and another one called mosaic before he did super 7 or was it mighty 7?

    Some honorable mentions:
    1) Supermansion - satire of superhero series similar to "The Awesomes" (I think they even came out around the same time), except this was made by the same people who made "Robot Chicken" and "M.O.D.O.K" (i.e. stop-motion) and had Brian Cranston as a superman-like character (subterran
    2) The Killing Joke - this movie had a ton of hype behind it. Iconic graphic novel made by the infamous Alan Moore? Check. Kevin Conroy as Batman? Check. Mark Hamil as Joker? Check. Created by the same people who made Batman, Superman and Justice League series in the 90's? Check. So what went wrong? The first half of the movie was used as a new prologue to the story, dedicated to making batgirl fall in love with batman, resulting in them eventually having sex on the roof of a building. Seriously? No one asked for that
Seriously, most DC animated movies since the late 2000's were targeted to either young adults (teen titans) or adults proper (I think Justice League Dark was the first R rated movie)

Justice League Dark should have been at least mentioned if not included on this list. It’s successor, “Justice League Dark: Apocalypse War” may have upped the ante in terms of darkness and brutality, but it’s predecessor laid the foundation for it and is dark and brutal in its own right.

    Great video thanks!
TL;DR: The video "Top 20 Most Adult Superhero Cartoons" lists the following shows:
    1. Batman: Gotham by Gaslight
    2. Marvel's Modok
    3. The Awesomes
    4. The Death of Superman
    5. Injustice
    6. Hit Monkey
    7. Batman: Year One
    8. Hellboy: Blood and Iron
    9. Suicide Squad: Hell to Pay
    10. Justice League: The Flashpoint Paradox
    11. Justice League Dark: Apocalypse War
    12. Batman: Under the Red Hood
    13. The Max
    14. Constantine: City of Demons
    15. The Boys Presents: Diabolical
    16. Batman: The Dark Knight Returns Parts 1 and 2
    17. Stripperella
    18. Harley Quinn
    19. Invincible
    20. Todd McFarlane's Spawn
Additionally, the video mentions "Stripperella" and "Justice League Dark: Apocalypse War" as adult superhero cartoons, but they are not part of the top 20 list. These shows are known for their mature themes and are not typically suitable for younger audiences.
