This is my Sunday mediation, i'm not ashamed to say i'm jealous of some of these bikes, and your skill at doing it, but so glad you share these with us
I'm really digging your vibe. Very mellow and peaceful. The world could use more of that. The love you put into your work, and that you have for your children, is obvious. My three kids are all grown up, graduated from university, and out on their own. I miss the days when they were little, and I was forever repairing their 20" department store clunkers and 26" mountain bikes. I'm almost 60, I'm getting back into it now, and doing it for friends' children. I'm also riding again! Thanks for what you do. It is inspiring.
Nice job! Those cromoly Kona frames are built to last, and their geometry and proportions are simply amazing. Your son must be very proud of your skills and all the love that you put re-restoring this beauty. Big hug, and thanks for the video!
Just been out for a ‘lad and dad’ ride with my 10 year old son this morning. We get out 2 or 3 times a week usually and there is no better use of my time. I truly love it when we are out on the trails. Building memories for the future 😬
Good for you man, I wish my dad did stuff like that with me, I've got into MTB recently and my mental health has never been better my physical health is getting better too it would probably of helped our relationship too
I got my son into mountain biking while he was a teenager and he loves it. He's 22 now and still hits the trails with the old man. Also just recently got him into gravel biking and he loves that too. No better way to bond with your kids. I see a lot more families on the trails these days and it makes me smile to see it.
Years back I purchased a 2001 Kona Blast Ford edition bike from a co-worker for $40, only used a couple of times and garage kept. Only things I upgraded was the seat and brakes, from mechanical to hydraulic. Give old bikes new life!
Man I love the old Konas. I have an 01 Kona Blast that I absolutely love. I have updated just about everything on it. It rides better than any other mtb I've ever had and I've had quite a few. You just can't beat an old school Kona. There's just something about the way they ride and plus they just look cool. Everytime I take it out to the trails It gets all kinds of looks and compliments. Especially from the older riders like myself.
Lovely bike and awesome rebuild. I'm also addicted to these old Konas (I own two Cinder Cones and an Explosif, all from '92 and '93, used by my whole family). With wide Panaracer Gravelkings or slicks for the city they are really eye-catchers.
Nailed it....I was thinking the colour scheme was great as it was, but seeing the final result it does look better. Nice build and great looking bike, fantastic work as always. All the best Andy
Outdone yourself on this one mate. The colour scheme is simple, yet so effective. Your sticker work and paint was phenomenal in this build. I wish you had put the cleaning of the componets as part of the vid, I live for that lol. There is something so satisfying about watching you clean up old parts and making them look and work like new. Same feeling as mowing an overgrown lawn! Keep up the good work mate, I always look forward to your vids. Greetings from Brisbane AU 😁
It feels like we have came full circle. The original explosif video was the first video I watched on your channel. Loved that video. The commentary, the music and what you done to the bike was one of the best videos I've seen on here. God knows how many times I have watched it. I was a bit apprehensive to see what you were going to do with the frame but it turned out great. Some times change is good and some times all you need is "Nostalgia".....
Just had a friend build me an older Jamis Dragon into a single Speed bike. Love it. Part of that is driven by your skill and interest. Keep doing what you do so well at doing!
Personally I am not a big fan of black as a primary color, but it really works and makes the gold and blue jump out. It basically makes them the center of attention. Looks really nice.
So rad.... I've enjoyed watching your progress (progression) so far!!! The gold chain is my favorite as well. I mean, you got a Chris King Headset and frame that does it justice but GOLD chain! bling bling Enjoy your summer rides and make more vids when you get the chance.
This is so cool Rob! I really loved the blue but that color change is so nice too. I got really excited when I saw the white and gold. I kinda want to do a white with gold accents build. They always look so clean. 😎 I bet your son will enjoy this for a long time. And thanks for including the riding footage. 👌
I came for the canoe video but stayed for all the subsequent awesome bike videos! This one reminds me of the JPS race cars 🏎 loved as a kid. But where is that loamy trail? (Unless you had to sign a NDA…) Thanks for another great start to my Sunday morning!
It’s just a cheep reflector mount I drilled a hole in and modified. The seat tube is oval where it meets the bottom bracket so I needed something flexible. It works great. I made it on the first build.
The bike have again turned out to be really good looking ☺️, but I feel that the previous green & thereafter the bule paints were more beautiful on this bike... enjoyed the video a lot though, specially the ride shots at the end, the location was great...so if possible pls post a video of the ride also ☺️
Awesome work and beautiful videos! One of the best channels I have discovered; it really is the perfect combination. Are you going to do a custom metallic paint job one day? I would be curious to see a vintage bike restored with a shiny glaring new paint like that.
Sick repaint, and with some surprise upgrades! Real nice build. Is that a 26 inch wheel platform? My explosif is possibly a few years older and takes 27.5s.... could you pull it off on that bike with a different fork?

Awesome!

Beautiful rebuild, Chris King headset, slx shifter's etc, haven't had slx since my Dawes Reynolds steel frame in the mid nineteen nineties!
You mean LX, slx is the modern version. Cheers
You're right, the memory is not what it used to be, it was stx I had on a previous bicycle!😉
@@johnwilmott8063 oldschool!
The Michelangelo the bicycle mechanic. I love this channel. Greetings from Germany.
slx are pretty sick for the money. I have those exact brakes, and they're fabulous.

Good to hear Ryan, cycling is therapy 👍🏻😬

Honestly, I like this rendition of the bike over the first time that you did it. Almost gives it that Smokey and the Bandit trans am look.
it's all in the details......your parts choice is what makes your rebuilds...the source of your parts choices is worth the watch.....ty
Original video of this Kona, was the one that got me hooked to your channel.
16:00 What a beautiful forest!

It’s fun to watch someone skilled at their Trade as obviously You are! Have a great day and God Bless You!

I love the black and gold paint job, and it's great to see you pass the bike down and give it a freshen up for him to enjoy as you did!
Nailed it....I was thinking the colour scheme was great as it was, but seeing the final result it does look better. Nice build and great looking bike, fantastic work as always. All the best Andy
Thanks Andy. Good to hear from you.
Nice! Of course he loves the gold chain! It’s like my ‘84 Race Inc. Gloss black with gold decals and chain!
such an aweseom ride. love the black and gold and blue.
simple and great paint job. its a great thing when we can share the same passion with our children.

This. Seeing old parts getting cleaned is sooo refreshing . Cheers from Sydney AU
Great job! Nice to see an old Kona. I have one Kona KiKapu bought brand new in 2005. I love my bike!

That paint job looks amazing.
Lucky boy and a beautiful build. Keep it coming
Nice one old shovel, great build, hope i have one like that. Nice parts.
Those gold letters just leap out. awesome !
So nice. I have fixed up our older bikes for my boys as well... but no where near that level. Kudos!
Just watched this with my 2 yr old and he said it's a bike, he's building a bike. Now I have something to watch with him as he relaxes before bed.
You just made my day! So awesome!
Very cool. I actually just got done refurbishing my 2000 Kona Hahanna. Forgot how much I love Kona.
I don't always watch your vids straight away, but I do get to them as they're always great when I'm looking for some mellow yet inspiring content 👍
Putting some decals in the dark. That's a mad skills you got there👀
love the old shovel font on the top tube
Great job etoe errr I mean oldshovel! Paint jobs are looking more professional every time out.
Compliments to you, a lovely bike build it looks great, and your young son must be thrilled with it 👍 Au
Great Rebuild! Fantastic job!!
Amazing finish look!
Just had a friend build me an older Jamis Dragon into a single Speed bike. Love it. Part of that is driven by your skill and interest.
Keep doing what you do so well at doing!
here in Brazil there are few MTBs from the 90's we do restoration usually on road bikes, Nice job yours
Personally I am not a big fan of black as a primary color, but it really works and makes the gold and blue jump out. It basically makes them the center of attention. Looks really nice.
That came out great, looks lovely. Love an old Kona, had a lavadome years ago, wish I'd kept it.
Hope your son feels better soon
Nice work 👍
Your son has the coolest bikes and it is great that he likes riding with you!
You make applying decals look soooo easy ... in reality, it ain't. i guess that the sign of a true craftsman.
Thanks for the great ideas! Love your craftsmanship!! 👍
Your work is amazing!!! Love your channel. Greetings from a fan from Chile 🇨🇱
You should totally do a video on how you do your stickers...
i second this
That would be a great idea 👍👍👍
Sweet build. I love all the blue accents. Hope your son loves it.
Love your vision when it comes to masking and painting. I am guessing what it looks like until the reveal.
We've come full circle.
I love those rims just as much as the first time I saw you build that Kona.
Nice rebuild have fun on the bike trip
Spotted a nice Thomson seat clamp on there . Just bought one . Cheers .
I have a set of Oury grips on my bike thanks to you. I got the dongle lock on version so no nickles needed.
So rad.... I've enjoyed watching your progress (progression) so far!!! The gold chain is my favorite as well. I mean, you got a Chris King Headset and frame that does it justice but GOLD chain! bling bling Enjoy your summer rides and make more vids when you get the chance.
your paintjobs are always inspiring. well done, mate
Absolutely gorgeous bike
It is quite of a job to get those paint results. Amazing job, it is the best looking I have ever seen for an explosif.
Love the transformation!
Great rebuild .bike looks awesome
The bike looks amazing! I always enjoy seeing a new old shovel video! Thanks for sharing so many amazing builds.
Once again you amaze me grate build
Love this colour scheme. Another great build. Thanks for making the content that you do.
I love the color combinations 👍🏼
i absolutely love thoes wheels. I'd love to find at least a rear wheel for my build.
What a difference a year of experience makes. That looks great!
That ooks absolutely amazing, you are an inspiration to retro mod bike riders
That gold chain really finishes it off perfectly 👍
What a great re-build, I like it.
Cheers from Germany.
Gefällt mir echt gut, das Gold und die goldene Kette sehen echt gut aus..
Wieder super Arbeit..
Can you explain in a video all the steps for painting if possible ? From sanding to clear coat! Many thanks!
This is so cool Rob! I really loved the blue but that color change is so nice too. I got really excited when I saw the white and gold. I kinda want to do a white with gold accents build. They always look so clean. 😎 I bet your son will enjoy this for a long time. And thanks for including the riding footage. 👌
Great build, personally I would have continued the black out of the fork. But who am to judge. Awesome sauce!
I came for the canoe video but stayed for all the subsequent awesome bike videos! This one reminds me of the JPS race cars 🏎 loved as a kid. But where is that loamy trail? (Unless you had to sign a NDA…) Thanks for another great start to my Sunday morning!
The trail was off the Oregon coast from our family vacation this spring. It’s called Cummins Creek. Awesome trail. I wish it was close by.
What a great bike set up for your son !
Wish I could find cool used bikes like this in my area!
People around here want $150 for a beat Trek 820 FRAME alone!
Love your work. I really miss some of the old bike colors. I’d love to see u bring back some of the crazy colors brands like Cannondale had.
I'm in Kona Hawaii watching your video right now! Great video.
Another great rebuild, thanks Old Shovel.
Like restoration, perfect bro
Outstanding. Love the wheels. Chris King headset is like carbon fiber, titanium, blue tooth and Velcro-makes everything better. 👍☮️🌞🌟🚲
Can you do a video on your decal printing process?
Love to old bikes given new life
You do a great job in customizing frames we’re do you get the paint stencils from ??
Nice build. What's that cable clamp you have for the dropper on the seatpost tube?
It’s just a cheep reflector mount I drilled a hole in and modified. The seat tube is oval where it meets the bottom bracket so I needed something flexible. It works great. I made it on the first build.
Lavoro straordinario, come sempre .
Riesci sempre a dare un altra vita a ogni MTB che restauri 👏👏👏👏👏
Nice job, looks awesome. 👍
The bike have again turned out to be really good looking ☺️, but I feel that the previous green & thereafter the bule paints were more beautiful on this bike... enjoyed the video a lot though, specially the ride shots at the end, the location was great...so if possible pls post a video of the ride also ☺️
The Michelangelo the bicycle mechanic. I love this channel. Greetings from Germany.
It just needs some nice modern lock-on grips to finish it off and it will look sweet. Nice paint job btw.
Any chance of doing a video on the things you HAVE learned regards the spray.bike paint?
Man i love that color combination.
Simply stunning
Interesting wheelset! What are they Sir? The spoke threading is unique.
Crank Brothers is the brand i believe!
crank brothers cobalt 2
Awesome work and beautiful videos! One of the best channels I have discovered; it really is the perfect combination.
Are you going to do a custom metallic paint job one day? I would be curious to see a vintage bike restored with a shiny glaring new paint like that.
Great colors. It’s been awhile, but I see you’ve gotten a little more complex with your masking. Nice job.
So beautiful !
Lovely work once again Rob, always great to see how you give these old mtbs new life and great to see them getting well used as well 🙌🏼
Brilliant my fave build from the start as you know👍🇬🇧
Love those wheels!
So what did you do differently with the paint? The previous paint job looked pretty beat up.
I did the graphics and logos with paint and did 3 layers of clear. The first build had just one layer of clear.
Hi, I would love to know what kind of wheels these are! they look great.
I have a question, where do you find those stickers decals??? Please need the info. Excelent job!! That bike looks great!!!!
Sick repaint, and with some surprise upgrades! Real nice build.
Is that a 26 inch wheel platform? My explosif is possibly a few years older and takes 27.5s.... could you pull it off on that bike with a different fork?
