I'm glad to hear Chip again, his memory is still good and I enjoy his stories. He really doesn't want to speak ill of anyone and I admire that very much!
“Girl I Knew Somewhere” was the “A Little Bit Me” b-side; “Words” was the “Pleasant Valley Sunday” flip. Micky played drums…I think John London was on bass Love hearing from Mr. Douglas, though…I’d love an episode on just his bass playing. Added so much to the tunes.
JR thank you tremendously for this. I could listen to this guy all day talk about these sessions. Pisces is a masterpiece in my opinion….my fave Monkees record and one of my faves from the 60s overall. I would’ve had 1000 questions for each song so it’s probably good that I was not there!! This is my first comment, but once I found your channel, I immediately subscribed and always look forward to every episode. I really appreciate all that you do. And I really appreciate Chip taking the time to do these interviews. It would’ve been amazing to have gotten one more record with Chip producing after Pisces. The Birds and Bees has amazing moments, but in my opinion was a tremendous step down from this one. I guess most anything would’ve been though after an album like Pisces….. We love you Chip Douglas! Thanks a million, JR.
Such a genuine, nice guy. No wonder "The Best Of" Monkees records had Chip at the helm. He cared about the music and cared about the guys. I'm a bassist/guitarist. I ended up carving out a great career as a session player, playing on many albums. The Monkees came along when I was a kid and just getting interested in playing. The bass parts Chip played caught my ear back then. Both his execution and tone. So, along with all the ones usually mentioned as influences (Paul McCartney, James Jamerson, etc.) Chip was also an influence on me. Very musical player. Thank you for this interview with him. And thank you, Chip!
Mr. Douglas seems like the kindest producer one could ever hope to work with. I recorded my own cover of the song some ten years ago. I learned the correct way to play the riff but didn't get on with it. I streamlined it so it had a walking decent pattern which seemed to flow better for me. But then I hate copying solos too. I need a change of scenery is better than the original - I don't ever want to see pleasant valley sunday again,....or something like that. One has to remember the target audience market, ( I was one of them ), which was everything back then,... even if you're subtly slipping in a more mature theme. I've thought about that song on/off for years now. I often wonder what Mr. Goffin would think of social media in 2024. I'm also certain many of us live in or near that place. For me, on the west coast, it was silicon valley and the old ibm company culture. Creature comfort goals. Meanwhile, companies are racing to give us even more creature comforts. Coming next, robot servants and I picture mine kicking me in the rear to get out of the way. LOL. Sorry for drifting. Cheers.
Wow! I am flabbergasted, astonished and so very humbled that Chip remembered my name and my friendship with Eddie Hoh. Not long after Eddie died, I wrote a very long piece about his life which was published in a rock quarterly publication called Ugly Things. Chip was so instrumental in my learning about Eddie's time in California, put me in touch with so many of their mutual friends and bandmates, and was incredibly gracious with his time - there is no way I could have done that without his help. Eddie's life wasn't an easy one, but towards the end, he did know that his playing was revered and that his contributions to the music we love did in fact matter, and that he himself mattered. I miss him a lot.
. Once again, Mr Russo, you have these GREAT guests in, you ask them many GREAT questions, and then, MOST IMPORTANTLY, you get out of their way, and let them speak, without CONSTANTLY interrupting them.......Thank You VERY much for the INCREDIBLY professional way you handle yourself......can't get ENOUGH of all your GREAT Monkee lore, and ALL you do to help keep this group ALIVE !! Thank you, again.........and THANK YOU, again, Chip Douglas !! 🙂 .
Great podcast! Pisces is my favorite Monkees album. Perfect blend of instruments played by both the Monkees & studio musicians with all Monkees lead & background vocals. The Door into Summer & Love is only Sleeping should have been released as a double A side.
Another great interview Joe! Sad to hear about Davy's struggles with stardom throughout his life through a friend's perspective, it had to be hard having your face plastered on teen magazines for a couple of years and then the curtain comes down and there's no where to go.
I know what Chip's talking about with the Pleasant Valley riff being played incorrectly by some of the reunion shows. I noticed it too. My band released a version and I had to learn it.
Chip ,wow, what a wonderful life full of beautiful music connections....his work with gene clark comes to mind....id love to know what happened that genes post byrds young new band fell apart, they seemed so full of youthful energy....i often wonder what might have been!
Interesting interview and let’s hope we get to hear the unreleased Davy & Peter songs. It was surprising that the 4 Monkees recording separately had already started by Pisces considering the effort that went into Headquarters & the apparent desire to record as a group, perhaps it is a testament to Chip Douglas’ production skills that you don’t get a sense of that from the finished album.
I didn't realize until close to the end that this interview was recorded a long time ago. So it was kind of jarring when I heard Chip say that Mike and Micky were currently touring. I thought for a second I was caught in a time warp.
Great interview with Chip and I am still waiting for the box set for "Picses...". According to Andrew's book on the Monkees, Mickey said that his drumming on "The Door into Summer" was his best. Too bad it has never been released as Eddie Hoh played drums on the released version. It's too bad what happened to Eddie, as last I heard, he was walking down the street and he was out of it like a zombie. "Cuddly Toy" made me laugh, when I found out Nilsson wrote the song after a girl got gangbanged at a bar by a bunch of Hell's Angels. There is a picture of Peter Tork with George Harrison, taken circa Jan. 1968 when Peter worked with George on his Wanderwall album. On the DVD menu is a Sitar and Banjo duet. In Oct. 1968 after George remixed the white album tracks, because Capitol got a bad tape, you can tell on "Cry Baby Cry", Beaver worked with George Harrison on the Jackie Lomax album and also George played Moog on his "Electronic Sound" with Beaver's help. Goodbye for now.
What’s the truth about “Love Is Only Sleeping?” Decades of rumors say this track was meant to be the single following “Pleasant Valley Sunday” but there was a manufacturing defect and “Daydream Believer” became the long delayed follow-up single. What’s The Truth?
I must be the only one, but I thought Chip was very antagonistic towards anyone involved in this project who wasn't Chip Douglas. Maybe he doesn't feel properly compensated by Rhino or something... but I'm just a little disappointed. Sounds like JR had a tough time keeping it moving in this interview as well, but did a super admiral job keeping Chip on track
@@markanderson1795 IMO, most interviewers I see feature themselves on camera way too much, interject their opinions way too much and cut their guests off way too much...I started the channel more out of frustration than anything else if you want to know the truth!

More Chip Douglas is always a good thing

A fascinating second half of the interview with Chip...top notch content as always Joe, Bravo! 😎

beyond thankful for your extraordinary generosity in taking the time to make this post...much appreciated...
I wanted to write something to thank and praise JR, but you have done it so well - all I need to add is X2.
Paul Beaver also played the Moog on The Turtles' song Elenore.

Agree with all of your comments.
I always clap my hands when I know a new Monkees video is taking place.. because you can't keep a good Monkees fan down.
Regarding Fast Eddie Hoh, his drumming on Goin' Down is incredible!
🥁🥁🥁🥁🥁🥁
My favorite album. It was this album, notably Daily, Nightly, that inspired me to be a musician.
one of my all-time favorite desert island Monkees tracks as well
HARD TO BELIEVE is Davy at his best. What a range! Great song.
I will always hear Mike as the guy providing the "Ahh" sounds at the end of the track no matter what history says. It just sounds like him.
Another great interview Joe! Sad to hear about Davy's struggles with stardom throughout his life through a friend's perspective, it had to be hard having your face plastered on teen magazines for a couple of years and then the curtain comes down and there's no where to go.

exciting!! long time coming this part 2 😉
Chip was the 5th Monkee!
Notably, DJB&H live would do a weird lead on Pleasant Valley Sunday.
My band in the 1980s wanted to hire Chip but we knew we couldn't afford him.

Is this the same Chip Douglas who’s I’m Gonna Git Ya is on one of the Eccentric Soul comps from Numero?
Chip! 👍. Eddie Koh! 👍

I would've if I'd known 😜
What’s the truth about “Love Is Only Sleeping?”

What’s The Truth?
I honestly thought that was just his name on "My 3 Sons ". How is Ernie and Robbie doing?
When was this interview recorded?
as stated 41-43 seconds into show, 2021

maybe ii will get Andrew Sandoval of his butt and make a Pices boxset
It's beyond likely there will be a PISCES box, it's just a matter of when...
Andrew wants to but Rhino aren’t interested in backing it
Host needs a proper camera and microphone. It’s mind boggling to record a podcast with such a lack of quality.
This was done years ago when I hadn't access to anything better...but, Heyyyy! Do I still get a "thumbs up", Fonz ??
I actually like how JR stays in the shadows and ensures the focus of the podcast is his guest, not him. Other interviewers could learn a lot from JR
