  • An inside look at one of WWII's most respected tanks.
    This particular tank survived the capture of two wars and is one of the nicest remaining examples of armor history in the U.S.
    This vehicle is located at the AAF Tank Museum located in Danville, Virginia.

    The Panzer workhorse of the Wehrmacht throughout WWII. In service from 1939 to 1945, with 8553 built the Panzer IV was continually upgraded and upgunned with better armor, cannon and suspension. Mechanically reliable, easy to maintain and repair it served magnificently from the beginning to the end of WWII. Without doubt my favorite tank of the entire war.

      @@Icetea-2000 I dont think thats what he means. the kv-1 is chonky as hell and a pretty iconic example of the original armour meta's final evolution.
      Its the kv-1 and the t-34 which brought the rise of the panzer 4, and as such it's influence in tank design is undeniable. The tank that saw the height of armour meta and it's final evolution gave way to the tank which would set the meta for the next 75 years. In a way one trend setter gave rise to another

      @@l.a.wright6912 You got that the other way around, the T-34 was supposed to counter the german tanks in the beginning such as the Panzer 4. The Panzer 4s development goes back before the war. What you mean is the Panther, who was made to then counter the T-34
      And I do think just from the shape alone, the Panzer 4 is the quintessential "tank". It’s not too small, not too big, perfectly proportioned, reasonably sized cannon (not on the first models), a reasonable armor and speed for the time, good reliability, but most importantly the shape is I think even more iconic than the Tiger 1 or the T-34

    • @l.a.wright6912
      @l.a.wright6912 3 роки тому

      @@Icetea-2000 No the t34 was developed in the late 30's and presents the last real stand of the armour meta. The thing I dont think you understand is that while the shortbarrel panzer 4 was developed around the same time the longbarrel panzer 4 was directly developed post barbarossa in a direct attempt to counter the much more heavily armoured russian afv's. It enters service in very early 1942 and would be one of the mainstaples of german afv design throught the war.
      the panther itself was largely an attempt to offer a mainline unit which offered both decent armour and a really good gun at range to deal with more heavily armoured targets(IE the is series of tanks) whilst being decently easy to produce. It enters service in 1943

    This is panzer IV model J in 1944 production. But the painting color is totally wrong. Wehrmacht grey color is discontinued in Jan of 1943

      I just saw this video now and I agree fully with you! Generally all the tanks, especially since the battle of Kursk, was painted with Dunkelgelb (Dark Yellow) and generally camouflaged with Olivgrün (Olive Green), Rotbraun (Red Brown) and often Medium Brown basically depending on the availability of the paints. I understood that the very late production of the Pz.Kpfw IV was painted with dark Olivgrün or similar because of the limited stocks of Dunkelgelb. Anyway you can see on opened driver's hatch good traces of the original Dunkelgelb and the interior with here and there the original elfenbein (ivory white) but has been badly repainted. Makes me almost cry how the dashboard been crudely "restored". Yep, this poor tank has to be seriously restored...

    Panzer IVs should not be grey and have the offset side armour (Schurzen) - They were all painted in a base of dark yellow (dunkelgelb) starting in early 1943, and the side armour came in early-mid 1943, so this is either based on fiction or an extreme exception. Either way less than optimal.
    The rest though, excellent!

      @@JohnsonTheSecond Yes, each vehicle has a stanchion holding a binder with info about each tank. This one also has it's unique history. I've responded to another visitor down below ( see Bobby Lee) about the history of this vehicle. There's a link in that reply to a Mark Felton video about these tanks that served in different armies after WWII. Check it out... he does some great stuff. I know for a fact that the museum received this tank in this paint scheme from Israel over 25 years ago... I can't say that it was not painted while they had it but I' was told it sat in a boneyard out in the desert while there. Maybe they should add some Czeck and Syrian soldiers to the display. :-)
