How to Properly Apply Eyeshadow Sticks | Simple Techniques to Achieve a Natural Look

- Cream eyeshadow comes in the form of sticks. These sticks are easy to use because you can apply these with eyeshadow brushes or your fingertips. I will show you two techniques to create a simple eye makeup that would achieve a natural finish and look great but won’t take too long to apply.
Technique 1: Using One Cream Shadow
Always choose a versatile shade (I suggest browns or champagne shades of which can be either Shimmer or Matte) that will go with anything that you may choose to wear or suit any time or occasion. Trust me, this will save you time and always give you the naturally gorgeous look.
Apply a bit of your chosen shade of eyeshadow on the main eyelid area. Then, with your fingertip or a brush, blend the shadow from the lash line to the crease with pressing and padding motions. This will avoid any sharp lines being left and merge the shade with your natural skin tone.
If you need a more intense look, you may add a bit more of the eyeshadow and repeat the blending process before the first layer dries.
And don’t forget to apply a bit of mascara to highlight your eyes. This is the way to achieve the most dramatic effect with a single shade of eyeshadow.
Technique 2: Using Two Shades of Eyeshadow
Often you may find that you need to deepen the look of your eyes. Then, I suggest you use one more shade of eyeshadow.
Apply the basic shade of eyeshadow as described above.
Now, to apply the second shade, choose one that is a bit darker than the one you selected as the basic shade. Both these shades may be of matte or shimmer variety, whichever you prefer.
Apply the darker eyeshadow stick at the outer corner of the eye. Begin with a small quantity because you can apply more if you need a darker shade.
Use either your fingertip or a dense eyeshadow brush to blend the darker shade beginning from the outer corner into the main lid shadow and, if you prefer, spread it to through to the crease as well.
For this application, I would recommend using a brush to keep the focus to the outer corner and, if you like to, into the crease.
Add a bit of mascara and you’re done!

I have both of those shades and am surprised that more people don’t talk about Kiko’s Stick Shadows. They’re so easy to work with and are at a great price point.
Thanks so much, girlie🍃🌸
True!, those eyeshadow sticks are lovely! Do you blend them with your finger or do you like to use a brush for it? 😊
Melissa Van Dijk I use my finger as much as possible. Especially since I usually just use one shade at a time. After viewing this though, I’m going to recreate then look you did with the darker shade (I have both shades). It looks so beautiful!
This is the kind of video that I was looking for... I bought a couple of eyeshadows like that and I didn't know how to use it. Thank you!

I’ve never worn makeup, have no idea how to put it on but I recently bought some eyeshadow sticks because of how pretty they are. Hopefully I can do this as well as you with a couple of tries, you make it look so easy but I’m nervous! 😅
Hey! :)
It takes a bit of practice, as blending the shadow may feel weird initially, but once that motion has become normal, it's easy. Don't give up! :)
Lovely video, so helpful xx

The Medusa piercing looks really pretty on you!

@@MelissaVanDijkOfficial Thank you, and you're welcome 🙂!
I love Eyeshadow-Sticks. Sometimes I only use such stick, sometimes I use them as an eyeshadow-base (in comibnation with pouder-eyeshadow).
And what I love: for special international events I do my eyeshadow with the colours of the flags. Actually I have 5 different matts and 6 differnt shimmery colours.
AND: in my age (50+) this sticks look and work much better than poudry shadows (still stay in place).
Take care of you and stay healthy.
Yeah those are great and so easy & versatile to use😊Combining them with powder eyeshadows is also a great way to use them and you're still able to blend the cream & powder into each other😊
Since you use some many of them, what's the name of your eyeshadow sticks are they all from the same brand?
Thank you🥰Same for you, stay healthy!
@@MelissaVanDijkOfficial Thank you, l'll do my best ;-)
Different brands, some from Rossmann (german drugstore), some from Maxfactor (baught from Thomas-Philipps, german lowcost-Seller). I have 10 different colours, but more than 10 pieces of some colours. Most sticks were 1 Euro each.
I life in germany.

Thank you so much 😊
hi, thanks for this video, helped me a lot. Can you tell me what brush you used many thanks Karen
Hey :)
Glad that it was helpful!
I use Zoeva brushes :)
I used the Zoeva 225 Luxe Eye Blender Brush :)
Thank you so much, I just got my colorpop x powerpuff girls collab makeup as a gift from my sibling and I wanted to know how to properly use these 😅...since I hardly have ever worn make up, only twice within my life if my memory serves me well.
So the whole color stick is pretty neat but I wanted to know can I use it as just an eyeliner underneath the eyelid to the top eyelid like a line to go around the eye itself; forgetting the word here but I was wondering if it was possible to use it like that without the need of eye shadow at all? Like plane look?
Yeah, sure! Go for it! :)
@@MelissaVanDijkOfficial thank you ;u;!!
Hi Melissa, can you tell us what primer you put on first for this video please?
I usually do not use an eye primer nor a face primer. However if I use one, I either use Kryolan's Eye Primer and/or The Ordinary High Spreadability Fluid Primer for my face. I usually just use a bit of concealer on my eyelids, then set it if needed and then do my eye makeup. I use Catrice Liquid Camouflage High Coverage Concealer :)
Are there specific makeup brushes for eye shadow sticks like the one you used to blend? What do I look for when I purchase a brush like yours?
I always stick to the same brushes as I think that they work the best for me when creating an everyday eye makeup look...🙈
I always use those: zoevacosmetics.eu/products/positively-beautiful-brush-set
I have this set and the same brushes in black and rose gold again🙈
@@MelissaVanDijkOfficial Thank you so much💜
Do you recommend a primer first, as my lids are those "mature" lids? Thanks. I love your work.
Yes, this can help to some extent. However, a bit of concealer may do it as well.
Thanks!
Look for the mat shades, not shimmer ;)
Love it. What is the make and 3 colours that you are using
Thank you
I listed the names and shade color in my video. I used Kiko Eyeshadow Sticks.
@@MelissaVanDijkOfficial thank you very much for your quick reply I will check the video again.
Nice
Thanks 🙂
Hi Melissa, I just purchased one of the Kiko Milano eyeshadow sticks because I love the range of colours (and creams are easiest to use for me) but when I apply it it looks very messy?? There are gaps and creases and when I use my finger to blend it just looks even more messy :-/ Am I doing something wrong? Absolutely love your videos, have helped me understand my skin so much! :)
Hey! :)
When applying the eyeshadow, make sure that you 'stretch or lift' your eyelid so that it had less creases in it. This way you can apply the eyeshadow properly over the eyelid. Once you have applied it and blended it the way you want, give it a moment to set. While it sets keep your eyelids 'stretch or lift' so that it won't settle in your crease.
@@MelissaVanDijkOfficial Hi! I just tried this technique and it still looks the same :-/ This technique does work for me using powder eyeshadows though?
@@emmastewart2629 Hm...what about using a primer/or not a primer before applying them and/or set them with translucent powder if you have this one hand. That's weird because they should set! Otherwise, Revlon has amazing cream eyeshadows as well which won't move!
@@MelissaVanDijkOfficial I was here looking for answers on why the cream eyeshadow stick from Kiko separated on the crease of my lid.. And I did prime beforehand and even tried to set with powder, but later I noticed the eyeshadow creased once again. So I'm not really sure what to do :s
👍
I found so many videos about eyeshadow sticks but no one is going over the prep - do you prep the eyelids with the base?
Usually, I just use a bit of my concealer or the Kryolan Eyeshadow Primer :)
@@MelissaVanDijkOfficial thank you! I recently bought Laura Mercier caviar sticks and having a lot of troubles with them :( I used them with and without the base ...they are so sticky for a long time. By the time, they are set, they are creased and I have gaps with no color on my lids. I will try the concealer. It’s just even if I use finger to smooth it out, the color sort of fades away. So the best way is not to touch them, but then, again, I guess the shadow is too sick and does not get dry for too long. By them, I already blinked like 100 times and it’s a mess! :)
@@irinaedwards5156 Then it may be an issue with the sticks...try the revlon or maybelline cream eyeshadows, those dry really well! :)
How do I apply a blue cream eyeshadow stick? What color do I coordinate with it and how do I apply that too?
Hey! :)
It can be applied all over the lid or just in the centre or outer corner (maybe through the crease as well). You can combine blue with any colour; it all depends on the look that you want to create. If you're going to keep it as neutral as possible and just give it a pop of colour, work with brown shades. Add a brown shade through the crease and outer corner and then add a bit of blue in the centre or add a brown shade through the crease, outer corner and centre and just add the blue shade towards the inner corner.
@@MelissaVanDijkOfficial
Thank you very much! That is really going to help me. Maybe can you do a how to coordinate your eyeshadow colors video?
One last question…I have a particular stick that’s sort of a dove grey color (more blue than grey). I’m very fair. How can I use that one?
Again…thank you. I truly enjoy your videos! Very informative!!
Glad to hear that my guide made sense! :)
I haven't done makeup videos in a while, I'm currently focusing on skincare and cryptocurrency :)
You can use that one the same way as I mentioned above or just use it as an outer corner shade (depending on how deep it is compared to the other colors that you want to use).
Which, brand of eyeshadow sticks did you use?
I used Kiko Eyeshadow Sticks! :)
What are the brand and colour names of these eyeshadow sticks?
I use Kiko Eyeshadow sticks. I mentioned each stick/name in the video.
What brush do you use?
I mainly use Zoeva brushes. As for the eyes, I usually go with the brushes that are in this set (you can get the set or individually): zoevacosmetics.com/collections/makeup-brush-sets/products/positively-beautiful-brush-set-vol2
I used 231 DETAIL CREASE DEFINER brush.
Do you use primer when using shadow stix???
You can yes. I just use a bit of concealer instead of a primer :)
Ok, thank you...and you did a #Lovely job 😍
My eyeshadow stick bobby brown dry how yo fix it 🥲🥲🥲
Hey! :)
Hm...I'm not sure if melting it and letting it 'dry' again in a little compact will do much. I guess that you have to try it. It's always important to put the cap back on the eyeshadow stick so that it won't dry out. However, over time (depending on how old your eyeshadow stick may be), this can happen and is normal.
They are silicone based so a tiny amount of silicone based primer should do it. Experiment with a small amount on a clean pallette like mixing spackle / wall filler 🐱
The model already started with eye makeup on her eyes
No, I do not have any makeup on my eyes in the very beginning of the video. My eyelids are naturally darker.
Having trouble with it breaking
How much do you twist for the product to come out? Just twist it a bit so that you can apply it to the lid without breaking it. Or you may have a gotten a faulty product.
It doesn’t have a twist was gentle with it worked a lot better
I don’t mean to point out the obvious but you’ve already got a colour on your eyes before you’re showing us how to use one colour. Are we supposed to pretend that we can’t see it?
I'm probably the only UA-camr that does not pretend anything here on UA-cam and replies to comments. Still, to answer your question, I haven't had any eyeshadow on my eyelids; my eyelids look darker because they are naturally a bit discoloured, and it becomes even more obvious because I have already had the rest of my makeup done.
@@MelissaVanDijkOfficial Is there a filter used? It might be because of the ring light
@@jenniferjen5422 Haha, no there is no filter used 😉
@@MelissaVanDijkOfficial Would you know if any of the Kiko shadow sticks are mat? Its hard to tell from their website :)
@@jenniferjen5422 04 Golden Chocolate, 20 Black, 39 Dark Taupe, 58 Lilac, 61 Light Mauve - those, to me look matte.
