- Lisa Gade reviews the Sony VAIO Duo 11 Windows 8 11.6" convertible slider tablet. The Vaio Duo 11 has a full HD 1920 x 1080 IPS display with 10 points of capacitive multi-touch and an N-Trig digitizer with digital pen. It runs on 3rd gen Intel Ivy Bridge CPUs, and our review unit has a 1.7GHz Intel Core i5 CPU with 6 gigs of DDR3 RAM and a 128 gig SSD. The tablet weights less than 3 lbs. and has a slider design with a backlit keyboard. It has dual band Intel WiFi, Bluetooth 4.0 + HS, NFC and two 2.4MP cameras. It also features a healthy selection of ports including 2 USB 3.0 ports, HDMI, VGA and gigabit Ethernet. The price starts at $1,099.

Yes, I can't wait to review the Duo 13 and the new Vaio Pro models!
I've typed several thousand words and haven't gotten a headache yet. The display angle works well for me.
Wow, wow, wow. What a wonderfully coherent and easy to understand review. I will never go anywhere else when looking for the latest and greatest in computers. How Lisa manages to talk for nearly half an hour with stumbling is a testimony to the art of communication and what's possible when the words, like, you know, and um are removed from the language. Thank you so much.
We''ll review the Samsung Ativ that's available at AT&T stores and Staples (minus the cellular radio). The big differences with the Ativ are no permanently attached keyboard and an Intel Atom CPU that's less powerful than the Core i5 and i7 CPUs in the Duo 11 and not yet widely available Ativ Pro with a Core i5.
I honestly don't care what product you review but I get excited every time you upload a new video. I watch them all. You're the greatest "reviewer" on UA-cam!
I bought this after watching your review and finding it is quite capable with the i7 upgrade with 8GB RAM, even gaming it is solid for nearly any mainstream stuff at 1366x768, but for everyday use the 1080p display is an amazing upgrade over the lower res displays on other similar devices. You always do a great job of covering points many reviews skip over or criticize that really aren't applicable.
The Duo 11 actually uses N-Trig and no Wacom (similar tech from two competing companies). The diff between the Galaxy Note 10.1 and the Duo 11 is that you can run the bigger selection of serious note and art apps made for Windows on the Sony. More capable apps for Windows.
The Lenovo Yoga 11s is coming this spring with Intel Core i3 and i5 CPUs. We have a first look video from CES 2013 of the Yoga 11s on this channel.
Yes, contrast and black levels are comparable to the Taichi and Yoga 13.
Hey Lisa I got one of these the very DAY they came out, replacing my Samsung Series 7 Slate that was running the RTM and previous versions of Windows 8. For some reason I didn't expect you to like it, but I am glad you do. I have never had a Sony laptop before and I have to say that I'm really impressed by this amazing machine. Glad to hear they are selling well. Thanks for another great review and please keep up the great work!
These Reviews are by far the most helpful.
The Lenovo ThinkPad X230t is available with the digital pen feature. The upcoming Asus Taichi will support an N-Trig digital pen on one of its two screens.
With games, it depends on what inputs they support (it varies from game to game), though in my experience most will use the pen as a mouse and you can use the side button as the right click. RON, AOE and AOM do support the pen as a mouse and it's such a nice way of moving armies around!
Where can l get battery ini cape town south Africa
I made my mom buy that Sony. She wanted a iPad and a Sony laptop. High quality, very expensive but it's made in Japan! They could remove the optical trackpad, NFC, widi to get the price down. It's an amazing product, jam pack with features. I am getting the D-LINK DHD-131 to get widi on the TV. You nailed lot of details in your review! Thanks
I honestly sometime just watch your reviews even for products that im not planning to buy just because you r an awesome reviewer.:)
We'll do a smackdown between the Vaio Duo 11 and Surface Pro to help you decide. Biggest diff: Vaio is more of a laptop with lots of ports, Surface Pro is for ultimate portability.
I know, the traditional convertible with the swivel hinge is actually very practical! The Lenovo Thinkpad Twist uses that design.
It's not meant for demanding current 3D titles. This has dedicated graphics and a ULV CPU like most Ultrabooks. It's fine for older games and some current 3D games that don't have killer requirements. Crysis 2 and Mass Effect 3? Not so much. Left4Dead 2? That's a go.
I have been in love with the Vaio Duo ever since I saw it first time, but most reviews are not overly positive, this was a welcome exception Thanks!
That really depends on what size you want. For an 11.6" I like the Vaio Duo 11 the best: light, lovely materials, fast and lots of ports. For a 13.3" I'd go with the Yoga 13.
The Taichi will supposedly be available in the US next month, though Asus has been known to miss release dates here.
The only Bias Free tech reviewer on UA-cam! Awesome reviews!!

I loved the Sony Vaio Duo 11. I miss it so much. I had to return it because it was just too expensive under my circumstances, but the machine was marvelous.
I ended up buying this machine. I freaking LOVE it! The i5 can multitask like a champ. I wish I could show a demonstration of how many apps I had running, including a metro app playing a video all at once.
I bought the Sony Duo 11 and you know what, it is very cool. You got two in one: a tablet for gaming, web, and social sites, and a laptop for my work. Still a bit expensive.
Same as a mouse, use the touchpoint's buttons to click on a point on the scrollbar.
I'm a little worried by the Dell hinge design. Also it is heavier than the Duo 11 and lacks the active digitizer with digital pen.
Key travel is similar to the Vaio T Ultrabook, but the layout is more cramped.
The Asus Transformer Book TX300 (just released) also uses a MagSafe style charging connector.
For sketching and editing with Photoshop, I'd pick the Samsung ATIV 700T since it has WinTab drivers for pressure sensitivity in Photoshop, Corel Painter and SAI Paint.
The quick ship has Win 8 or you can order it with Win 8 Pro. I used my Pro upgrade on it and still had access to the Sony apps, despite Microsoft's warning that manufacturer apps might disappear from the app store.
love love love your reviews. great details, excellent presenting skills. no painfully unfunny jokes or bad camera day here. so great!!
YOU HAVE THE BEST REVIEWS ON UA-cam!!!
This is a fully fledged, touch screen computer . . . . so powerful and feature packed. Plus you can get over 300Gb of storage on it!! I LOVE IT!!!!
We will review the Dell XPS 12.
Yes, Windows 8 tablets all have handwriting recognition.
I had this device for nearly a month. Enjoyed it very much. I saw it more as as a very agile laptop, with comprimises to have its agility. The i5 and 8GB ram was EXTREMELY powerful. Build quality was great. I don't get why people complain about the slider? Anyway, I had to return it because $1900(tax included) was way too much. Do I miss it? YES!!!!
Lisa..Waiting for the Samsung ATIV S windows phone review. and a BiG Thank You for keeping our requests..With so many products coming out I can understand you have your hands full all the time..Great reviews as always.. :-)
I'm thinking of replacing my Samsung Series 7 Slate (upgraded to release Win 8) with the Duo 11 as well. The Duo is more versatile and has a better display, though it is heavier than the pure slate.
As usual a thorough, informative and entertaining review. Thanks! I'm really on the sidelines on all this Win8 hubbub. Waiting for the smoke to clear before I decide on whether to even get any win8 tablet at all or wait and see what is next, but your reviews do give a great insight in the current state of the art, warts and all.
What a delightful review. Most reviews have a bias already installed in their head so they their info. is a bit suspect. Lisa did a great job. Just the facts ma'm. I have been using a Duo 11 for a couple months without any major complaints. Battery life is a little short, there isn't a docking station, and lacking a pen holder are my only complaints. I use a 30" monitor (hdmi), keyboard and mouse (usb) when at my desk with no problems. Every once in a while I buy a Sony and I am always glad.
I used in the store it is 1400euros in Belgium with some additional options. Such a nice screen and beautiful device. Watching her reviewing is just trying to confirm if it is a good buy.
Nope, Ultrabooks with ULV CPUs only get dual core i7 CPUs. The Sony Vaio Z is pretty much the only crazy light laptop with a quad core i7 option (but no touch screen).
Yes I can recommend it for my studies, I'm using it since two weeks and I love it ! Ok the keyboard has quite small keys but it works fine for me (although I have big fingers !). I use the stylus to quickly highlight some text. About battery life, I manage to do up to 5 hours without wifi. Maybe by modifying some settings it can last longer.
If you can offer it to you, just do it, you won't regret it !
Nice.
I've read most of what has been published and uploaded about the XPS 12, but nothing compares to the coverage on this channel.
What a thorough review, thanks, actually had the Dell XPS12 ultrabook on order but they seem to have a shortage of screens and its taking too long so thanks to this review think I will get this one instead. And +1 for using the Hobbit trailer ;)
The US version doesn't have 3G, overseas very well may.
I think you're talking about the Modern UI (formerly called Metro) with Live Tiles. That's a standard feature of Windows 8.
You can run Autocad on the Duo 11, but I have never heard of the other program.
Thanks for your in-depth review! I was a bit unsure about this product, yet I completely got into it after watching your review. So I just... bought it, yesterday ^^!
Hope this kool gadget could help Sony to turn around!!! (Y)
Thanks for your time on this, think i just might get one. You rock!
I believe Sony sells it under the same name in the UK.
I really miss this... Wish sony kept their vaio line; I wanted a thinner version of this with smaller bezels but sadly while I was waiting for that, they closed their laptops division. Now, even buying this version is thousands of dollars :(
Still have mine if you're interested :)
Lmao
I have mine too.
Like most Ivy Bridge Ultrabooks with Intel HD 4000 graphics, it can run Skyrim at 28-33fps at low settings.
Daniel, I agree completely! Sometimes, I have 0 interest in the product but I only watch it FOR Lisa!! Like I said months ago..Lisa could read/review the phone book and I would watch! :)
About the N-Trig... even though it only has 256 levels of pressure, I have found that light pencil lines are more controllable and reproducible on the Sony than on my Note 10.1. If I can just get it working with Painter, I'll be perfectly happy with this purchase.
I've had mine about a month at really like it. It is 66% laptop, 33% tablet IMO. I recall when watching this video the first time that you mentioned Painter has pressure sensitivity... not true, unless its toggle switch is *really* buried. N-Trig support 'promises' Q1 2013 for driver upgrade. Other points for viewers to consider... the lack of track pad IMO huge asset! Not more dragging thumb into it messing up typing. Keyboard up/down in 1 second. That is very liberating!
I have both the Sony Vaio Duo 11 and the latest iPad. I still pick up my iPad 90% of the time simply because it's more light and convenient. This is a great device, but in a different class to the iPad.
Love it been lookin all over for a tablet that can be this versatile (Y)
The Vaio Duo 11 is much more expensive and powerful than the HP Envy x2. Depends on how much speed you need and your budget.
Google dropped Exchange ActiveSync for new accounts. If you set up your device with EAS before the cut-off date of early Feb. then you still get that service from Google. Annoying though for those of us who are setting up new Windows machines now!
I will probably be getting this over the surface for a few reasons:
Full size HDMI port
VGA port (most of my monitor hookups still use VGA)
Full sized sd card slot (micro SD sucks, primarily because the cards are too small to easily handle, and digital cameras still use SD cards)
Backlit keyboard
Ethernet port
Ok I hv a Sony Vaio Duo 11. I LOVE IT. there are some features I really like on the Duo.1. NFC(Near Field Communication), many phns(NOT APPLE iJUNK5) has built in NFC(SONY, SAMSUNG, HTC,MOTOROLA...). 2.ELECETRONIC digitizer STYLUS. this Stylus is mouse too & you can do some crazy things on it(too many to list here, AMAZING).3.front&rear camera works great. 4.1080p screen. 5.2USB3.0& HDMI port 6.LIGHTED KEYBOARD works great. 7. i7CPU with 256 SSD(it's pretty impressive for such a small ultrabook)
Great review as usual Lisa. After this review I will be picking the Sony Duo 11 over the Microsoft surface pro.
Hi Lisa, I really love your reviews, very in depths and covers all aspects :) hope you will review the Asus Taichi soon
Lisa, great review. I helped me decide on the Sony over the Surface Pro. The N-Trig is what concerns most people wanting a tablet for art purposes. I have found that it works well with SBP6 and ArtRage (much, much better than the Atom ATIV) but I cannot get pressure with Painter12. Probably for the same reason folks are having issues with Photoshop. I'll subscribe and hope there is more discussion on getting this great hybrid working with all 'creative' apps.
i was going for the surface pro. But i got a newsletter from sony and changed my mind. One week later i have the Sony Vaio Duo 11.
Sony did a great job on this little tablet/ultrabook
I always enjoy your reviews. This particular model is the most appealing to me so far. One thing I'm wondering though, is it still quite cumbersome as an e-reader? I liked the Yoga 13, but it is not particularly designed to be used for e-reading. I think I still have a few years to wait for a tablet with full Windows functionality and light enough to be a comfortable e-reader.
I tried it out at a Sony store. It's amazing and it makes my IPad 3 feel outdated and out classed. Much more flash drive storage space plus 8 Meg's of ram, full windows 8 and Microsoft office.
It's more capable and powerful than the Surface RT that's available now since it can run Windows 7 apps (.exes) and has a faster CPU and GPU. But it doesn't match the battery life and portability of the Surface RT. Depends on what you need: a full PC experience (Duo 11 or Surface Pro when it ships next year) or super portability and long battery life (Surface RT, available now).
What exactly is your laptop model? A 1080p IPS display cost is much higher than a standard LCD panel. Smaller display doesn't really matter much in terms of cost performance. For both computers, the price reflect the specs pretty well. And yes, putting the same performance in a smaller package is much harder to do.
I love looking at Bing in the videos to tell what day they were made! lol.
Very good review. IMHO, Sony may not lead in term of specifications, but the design is simply gorgeous and original. I see this as a great replacement for notebook/ultrabook, especially have it connected to projector and do presentation, via its D-sub port.
Great job Lisa as usual.
I really like your reviews they are very in-depth and very informative thank you.
Great review as always. Yours are just the best and most pleasant to watch
I have a small question:
is this device better to us for college stuff or the dell xps 12?
I'm really interested in a convertible and i could use your advice.
it only means you haven't seen it in person yet, if you have but still thinks it's ugly, then, it's on you. it's not out dated at all, already explained to you why, SONY has one of the biggest and best R&D of any companies in the world, they know what are needed and important. ALL Vaio includes VGA port, it is a business MUST, and SONY targets Vaio more to the business users. Vaio Z VGA, HDMI, and USB 3.0 as well as every possible ports and slots imaginable and the top of line one costs 4000
Thank you for the review Lisa, just subscribed.
I have a question, I am really interested in the Vaio Duo 11 and I am considering on buying it, should I take it or should I wait for the Windows Surface Pro? Please give me your honest answere !!
There is actually 2 cameras on the Duo 11! There is one on the back as well!!
The specifications of the Duo 11 is very similar to Microsoft's upcoming Surface Pro. I was set on purchasing the latter but now that I've seen the Duo 11, I'm reconsidering.
SONY designed Duo 11 to be the best of both worlds, in tablet mode, it takes advantages of windows 8 new design and feature sets, also makes non typing related tasks more natural and direct with touch;
in PC mode, it'll provide all you would need and want in a ultrabook format
if you don't see the point, then you are not the targeted customer for the Duo, thus SONY also makes Vaio T14 and E14 with touch screen in a ultrabook and everyday laptop formats, or S and Z for high performance laptop
oh also, calling it ugly? Have you seen it, handled it in person? then i suggest you to visit your local SONY store. This is a top of line SONY product targets elite professionals, it sits at the highest end in terms of quality, design, and craftsmanship by any standard. it has killer features and extremely useful for the target customer (the ones usually have money), part of the reason why it's been sold out in many markets around the world
You would really have to test it out and think of what you will really be using it for. I personally would prefer the Sony Vaio Duo 11. I had it for a month and thought it was a great machine. The only thing about the Surface Pro is it only has 4GB of ram. With Sony, it comes with 8GB.
Probably in a week or so, first we have to do the Surface Pro video review.
Thank you for the review, great job, you always cover the important aspect. Great piece of hardware EXCEPT for the N-Trig, i was really hoping Sony went with Wacom on a high end piece of equipment. =(
OMG Lisa! You play Mass Effect? 01:48 picture of Asari. Best game ever, good pick :D Oh yes and I love your reviews they are very detailed. Subbed :)
I ended up buying the HP Envy touchsmart Laptop. Over all Im happy with it . 700 dollars is a little more than I wanted to spend. But not much more.
Great review, Lisa! Sony makes a nice product. I like that.
It has a full Windows 8 OS, so it can definitely download torrents and eBooks just like any other laptop. It's important to understand the difference between Windows RT (mobile OS) and full Windows 8 (desktop/laptop OS). I don't know about its gaming capabilities though.
I love this Sony Tablet btw and would love to purchase one
The Razer Blade if you don't care how much you spend. The Lenovo Ideapad Y500 is a good option for a budget.
For digital art, Macbook Pro with Retina Display for high quality hardware. I can't think of any right now for software. Any Windows computer, usually ones that support digitizer pens, are the best, but any other is fine.
Those are just my opinions, but any computer will do as long as the graphics card is good. Go for computers with AMD Radeon or NVIDIA graphics cards.
Thanks for the review lisa. Heres a quick question, can the pen be used in all aspects of windows, including games? I like my old school rts, like age of empires/ mythology. So since the pen has both left and right click function, will it work?
seems you have fixed video quality issues? I noticed no interlacing/blurriness this time, thanks for the great review!
the Duo 11 looks better when opened, especially feeling and seeing that beautiful and well made alum bottom and keyboard. Vaio has never been overpriced, AGAIN, people need to stop using "overpriced" without justifying it. There are no companies in the world design and produce computers at SONY and Apple's level, not to mention R&D, material they use and how they produce them.
Vaio r beautifully designed & have the highest level of craftsmanship, Vaio Z are still made in Japan crying out loud
Lisa....which computer/tablet do you think is better.....Sony VIAO Duo 11 OR Samsung AIV Smart PC? Thanks so much for your feedback....will be buying one within the next couple of days.
Sony knows how to make things look awesome
We had a bunch of these at a demonstration at my university. I thought it was fantastic with the exception of the keyboard, which was terrible. I have medium/large size hands and the keys were way too small. I couldn't imagine doing any serious typing on it which was a problem. The touch screen and the software is great though.
13.3" and 16:10 and I'd buy one right now. If it a Wacom digitizer and a moderate dGPU and I'd probably buy two.
How would you say the digital pen experience feels compared to say the Galaxy Note 10.1? Kinda hate WIndows 8, but this actually makes me not mind getting it with all this offers. Would you say this is the best portable full desktop tablet on the market that uses the wacom digitizer pen technology? Oh one other question I had if I may ask is do you happen to know how many pressure points this one uses? Thanks and awesome review as always Lisa! Thanks.
