Steve Gadd, Steve Smith, JoJo Mayer, David Garibaldi, and so many others. This planet if full of incredible drummers. I wish people would quit comparing and just enjoy the artistry.
Dave just keeps getting better, and better, and better... He is IMO one of the best drummers in the world today. Every time I see him play he blows my mind all over again.
I truly don't think many understand what they witness when Dave is in the zone like this. Its a spiritual awakening when someone reaches this level of talent.
If anyone out there can name one drummer on the planet who could touch that solo I would like to know who it would be !!!!!! Best Musician / Drummer there ever has been
@@walterjavierescalante1176 ol Dennis. . Legend. I think Weckl is a cut above the best because of his melodic playing and ridiculous transitions.. everything he does compliments everything else he does haha.. I listen and analyse him everyday and his fills often layer and overlap by a few beautifuly placed notes.. Bozzio good at that too..

Thanks a lot for telling us! Searching the internet you'll find a very nice version of the whole piece (Tipitina's) played live at the Leverkusen Jazztage 2003 by Mike Stern (g), Bob Franceschini (sax), Alan Caron (b) and Lionel Cordew (dr).
Nobody can duplicate Weckls playing, he is a law onto himself ,his syncopation is light years beyond everyone is. The only drummer with this type of class is JoJo Mayer. Many of the greats you can understand there ideas and do things that they can do. With Weckl it's almost impossible ,the space he leaves between notes would make a super computer blow it's circuits. Buddy is well represented by Dave.
What about Vinnie Colaiuta and Steve Gadd? Gadd is far classier than Weckl, in my opinion, because he knows when to tone it down for the sake of the song instead of just playing the most technical shit he can. But yeah, Dave is awesome. Buddy was way ahead of his time, as were Gadd and Vinnie. Dave is awesome technically. He's just a little too showy for me.
For me this guy Weckl does things no one can do, Vinny and Gadd are incredible , but Weckl is like someone from another universe. The space he leaves between notes is almost impossible to duplicate. But hey Gadd and Vinny are extremely talented as well.
i agree, but there are some new guys in drumming industry and you have to check them up, for exmaple matt garstka. he plays stuf not of this earth. just check him.
Mine too.. so many but I particularly like drumtalk solo, Montreal solo, Humpty Dumpty and that sick as absolute mind-blowing Dave Weckle band plays Latin solo .!.
Do we really need to determine who of this guy, Vinnie Colaiuta, Steve Smith, et al, is the most Godlike? All you have to remember as a drummer is to clean the floor in front of you, because all of them are going to make your tongue hit it.
It's called "Tipatina's" and there are many versions out there. Recently i've found one posted by Mike Stern himself here: ua-cam.com/video/uCVmWY60NNM/v-deo.html It's from his album "Play" released in 1999.
Now I've seen Virgil doing these bass routines as well, but nothing near as musical or melodic as Weckl does. Virgil is utterly brilliant and one of the best ever, but he gets a bit too caught up in technical playing for my taste at times. He tends to lose the musicality and appeal by being too technical. He's still one of my faves, but no one tops Weckl in my book.
one of the best marriages of chops and groove I've ever seen. unreal

The tune is called "Tipatina's".

name of the song please?
In fact he's (and thus the whole band) shifted the "one" to one eighth later.
Intentionally or not? Presumably that's the reason why he's smiling :)
Mike and Dave fell out of time on the last chop. Dave recognised this instantaneously and added approximately a semiquaver to come back into time.
