Is there allowances for under floor duct work that leaves residual heat through the floor, that would affect the wire layout (around/avoid)?
I'm an Electrician......Notes: The connector shown on this video for the Home Run cable is not appropriate. If running Romex to the box, from the panel, a Romex Connector must be used, if running MC, you would use an MC connector, and so on. You must run the appropriate sized wire based on the amperage the system you are installing draws. Also, although it is not verbalized, I did notice that the metal box was grounded, even though the ground wire doesn't connect to the thermostat itself, this is correct. You must ground all metal boxes back the the panel. The size of the ground wire is also determined by the NEC. Personally I would run a dedicated circuit to this system, because a bathroom is considered a "wet location" the Home Run must be GFCI protected with a GFCI Breaker. Verify this with the NEC. Be absolutely certain that the provided wire has no damage at all, do not repair damaged wire with tape or splices. Do not install damaged wire, return damaged wire to the supplier and have new wire sent. If at any time the breaker trips, do not simply reset the breaker. A tripped breaker means something is wrong, have a qualified Electrician test and investigate the problem and resolve it before re-energizing the circuit.
You do realize that's why they say it must be installed to your local electrical code, right? And unless you're an electrician in Canada I think you're a little presumptuous in assuming that this doesn't meet code, because this installation took place in Canada.
@@Matlock69 My Professional recommendation stands. Code is the Minimum we are required to do. I never give a client "the least" they can expect, I dont care what Country they live in.
So you're saying all these products are designed as a system?! LOL. Yeah, it's shocking how often people fail to use a cohesive approach to this sort of thing. I see this in various trades. Painters using different brands of primer and paint together despite their chemistries being designed to work together as a system. Tiles and thinsets, all sorts of examples of how people fail to see the value in utilizing the entire product line of a particular brand or product type.
In this case, the opinion of an electrician is not very valid because many times the electrician asks me, I am the ceramic installer, how the thermostat should be installed, and if some problems arise they start saying that I should not have installed the thermostat. cable or any excuse for not solving the problem, that's why I always leave them the instruction manual at work so that they know how to do their job that they studied for that or so that they see that there is a 1800 telephone number where they can educate more about the ditra heat system
You always want to verify your Electrical installation with the tile installer, painter, carpenter, and plumber.....I mean....that's clear.

Thank you! These cables are built to last, as long as the installation instructions are followed in the the DITRA-HEAT Installation Handbook, including all testing, and nothing damages the cable afterward.
I have a question about the waterproofing part:
If you embed the kerdi band on top of the ditra mat to waterproof butt joints, cutouts etc. - isn't the water going to seep through the mortar underneath the mat making it effectively useless?
I mean - the mortar doesn't actually bond to the mat per se, it just fills in the bumpy profile and hardens. Taking into account the fact that ditra mat has a decoupling layer function - if it allows for the mortar to move and absorb deformations, then it means micro channels between already hardened mortar and the ditra mat could form and moisture could simply flow through them and seep through the mat butt joints and into the substrate. Not a huge issue if you build on top of concrete, but kind of a big deal if you have a wooden substrate which would absorb this moisture and could develop mold. Not to mention now the ditra mat would act as a lid over the substrate not allowing for it to dry out properly...
I know that for full waterproofing I would need to embed and seal the whole floor with kerdi membrane, but I would like to know your opinion on why is it enough to seal the problem areas only with patches of kerdi band.

Thanks for your question. Since DITRA is waterproof, the only thing left to do when sealing a floor under tile is to waterproof the seams with the KERDI-BAND, as you mentioned. Yes, some moisture may seep through the grout joints or tile into the thin-set in the DITRA squares. However, where the edge of the KERDI-BAND is, the moisture would need to migrate at the top of the squares where the capillary action in the mortar under the KERDI-BAND does not allow water to migrate the distance of the overlap. Therefore, the seam is waterproof and will not leak or cause any issues. Good day to all. I would need help if possible . I put a SLC over my wood substrate . Primed it before as prescribed.. It was naturally a disaster: SLC is a real technic... I grind/sand it . Naturally not flat but not bad. Question 1: could I use the modified thinset Schluter just to fill some of the gaps, leave it settle/dry then put my layer of thinset&Ditra heat? Question 2: do I need a primer to put over my SLC prior to Schluter ThinSet ? Thank you for answering rapidly.

Great video, my only question is....why would you put the cold lead to conductor splice in the floor and not in the junction box?
Hi there! The reason for this is that electrical code does not allow the heating conductor(s) to be run through the wall. Doing so could shorten the lifespan of the cable because of overheating in a confined space and more importantly, could cause damage to the structure.

Do I need to use the Kerdi ban along the walls that will have wood baseboards, not tile. My wood baseboards do not need to be waterproof, but if the Kerdi band is required, I need to know. Also, is the All Set thin-set modified the only mortar I need? When would I be required to purchase "un-modified"? My installation is going on wood.

I am planning to install a curb less shower with ditra headed floor continuing into the shower area. do you have a shower pan with the "studs" included so I can run the wire in?

My heating cable is now run through the conduit to the box, sticks out approx 36". Heating cable has been run in the Ditra heat membrane, perfect! Now What do I do with this excess wire on this end that is sticking out of the box? I'm not suppose to cut it. Video doe not show any excess sticking out of the box before the thermostat is installed. I have way too much cable to wind u inside my double gang box. Suggestions

what gage wire is used for the 240V cables?
because the cable resistance is based on length, the material and the gauge of the conductors changes for different lengths.

Ditra Heat Instructions say "Floor temperature sensors may not be threaded through the same conduit as the cold lead." This video @13:05 says you can use the same conduit. Which is it?
Hi there, it appears that perhaps you are looking at an older version of our Handbook. The latest version follows the same instructions as the video, "...the temperature sensors need to be threaded either inside the same conduit as the cold lead, or in a separate conduit. "

To clarify, we use modified underneath to apply the ditra heat to the plywood, and unmodified to adhere the tile to the top of the ditra heat?
Hi there. That's correct (unless you are using a certain glass or moisture sensitive stone that requires a special setting material). You can also use ALL-SET to install the tile.
@@schlutersystems1 we changed our minds and added the heated floor after purchasing the mapei uncoupling membrane and mortar (which is unmodified), so we kept that mortar for on top of the ditra, and we ordered mapei keraflex plus for our wall tile, so I'm using that underneath the ditra, but should I also use it when doing the waterproofing after laying the wires, or use the modified?

I'm still having problems with this material. It's a constant struggle to get it to lay flat.even with all set you still have to weight it down meaning no wire laid today. Our ditra here doesn't come rolled fleece side out like you show on video though I'm sure that would remedy the problem though it may be easier to stop the rollback than to stop the cupping. And the square sheets also have a bit of the same problem.sorry to complain but I just find it frustrating.all other schluter products I use are top notch.

I don't see all the seams waterproofed with 2" overlap membrane. Do you waterproof all seams?
Good question! Waterproofing with a 2" overlap is required in areas that will be exposed to water, like a floor to shower connection.

What is the blue material/foam you use around the edge of the room at the base of the wall?
The blue foam is Sill Seal, a compressible polyethylene gasket. Since it is important to have a perimeter movement joint throughout the tile assembly we used the sill seal to ensure a consistent joint along the perimeter. Hope this helps!

Why would one need to level the floor BEFORE installation? Would it not be warranted if it is afterwards?
I figure that it is an insurance to level after, as you can have humps after installing the uncoupling membrane.

Hi there, the likelihood of needing to adjust the amount of mortar when setting tile is reduced when installed over an even substrate. The DITRA-HEAT trowel, or another 1/4" x 1/4" square notched trowel, is used to install the DITRA-HEAT membrane. When the membrane is solidly embeded in the mortar, there shouldn't be any humps or unevenness. The thin-set used to install the tile should be applied as evenly as possible as well. This is why we need to start the installation with an even substrate. The warranty is valid when the instructions in the DITRA-HEAT Installation Handbook are followed. This video could be only 3 minutes. Membrane Instructions start around 13:30 and finish at 16:40. Everything before that is mostly repeated promotional material which you don't really care about when you need to do the installation. I guess they put that instead of ads

I plan on using the shower system without a curb (for wheelchair access). Can I install the Ditra Heat to extend into the shower? In other words, can I install Detra Heat over the shower system pan?
