No it's not the best port of this game, but it still has it's charms. I'd love to one day own this particular version to go alongside my Saturn version, my PS1 Metal Slug X, and my copy of the PS2 Anthology.
So those mid-level loading screens are the PSX equivalent of the arcade version's slowdowns? Also, that's some pretty neat MS gameplay... wish I was that good at this game.
The PSX version of Metal Slug retains the look of the arcade, but manages to avoid the much-maligned slowdown by severely cutting down the animation. Many characters and objects animate with as little as 2-3 frames, The difference between this version and the Neo-Geo & Saturn versions are quite striking. The frequent "data loading" pauses are certainly annoying and makes me wish I was playing on a cartridge instead of disc (gimmie an Atari Jaguar version). That said, the look of the game is preserved and the action remains very fast and challenging. The design compromises were common for Generation Five. Do you focus your attention on the animation or the slowdown? You have to pick one or the other, but you can't have both. Given the Playstation's limited RAM, this was probably the right choice for the platform.
Saturn version's pretty much plagued with slowdown, I own a copy, I can see it for myself when I play it. I managed to snag a copy years ago, when copies could be had for as little as $10 (I got mine off a forum I am a member off, guy sold me this for $10, and Konami MSX Antiques for Saturn for $10, neither are that affordable anymore with both going for over $100 now).
@@misteuraxe691 metal slug x for ps1 dosent have data loading becouse convert sound in a very low quality to avoid loading . this conversion of metalslug 1 have the same neogeo sound uncompressed
The PS1 was not designed to play 2D games , it was designed for 3D which it did very well. It struggled with the audio so was heavily compressed and it also had a small video buffer which is why the game needs to constantly load where as other versions on other CD consoles don’t, it has a lower frame rate too. Neo Geo CD is the best version, Sega Saturn comes a close second for the CD based machines out at the time.
I tried and beat this PS1 version, and yes, it's not a great version overall. However, I would have still being happy if i had this game for my PS1 or PS2 since SNK's home ports are too pricey and scarce compared to a PS1, a console that most people would have had instead. The loading in beween levels is not as bad as i thought it was going to be. It's less long and less intrusive compared to...i dunno, a youtube ad.
The constant "Loading" sure is annoying, might as well go back to the Neo Geo version instead, then again back then Neo Geo sure has a hefty price so PSone version is a cheaper alternative.
First Metal Slug was Japan only for PS1 and Saturn. Arcade, AES, and I believe Neo CD versions did come out here, and once MS Anthology came out, MS1 could be enjoyed by people in the US in the home.
@@reaperprince0 That's because it is uncensored. SNK had a weird habit of censoring their games in the US, Samurai Shodown comes to mind with the white blood. Mai Shiranui has no bounce in the AES and Neo CD versions in the US version of KoF's (that can be remedied if you look around GameFAQ's for how to do so, change region on the disc to Japan in the options menu, then back to US, and her bounce will be in the game).
Not much couldn't be done, ther animations had ot be cut, and the sound effects downsampled to fit into the PS1's RAM. Saturn SNK ports also suffered plenty of sound issues on their own.
less animation fames, mid level loading... The saturn version is the better of the two non Neo Geo releases of that era, only because the Saturn game required a 1Mb RAM expansion
Both version sucks the Saturn version even that it has all the animation frames sadly is sacrificed by the abismal framerate not even the RAM cartridge can save it
MetalSlugJake XXX also, there are some other things, like the loading screens, they are everywhere, most of the frames of animation are missing, making the game, while not awful when it comes to framerate, look choppy and less fluid, and that was part of the charm of metal slug.
Of course, there's no way CD-quality audio (Redbook) would be better than a cartridge's... wait, actually your comment doesn't make sense: the audio the same you find on the Neo Geo CD version, that is quite good, way better than the AES version.
Sound had to be downsampled and animations cut to fit it into the PS1's RAM. Saturn SNK games also suffered similar issues with downsampled audio on pretty much every game they put on that console. I pretty much have all the SNK made stuff (and World Heroes Perfect from ADK as well), and they pretty much all have muffled audio, or in the case of KoF 96 and 97, everyone sounds like they are on helium.
Wow....big loss of animation. Almost looks jerky compared to neogeo original.....of course i know the reason why. Even the saturn that A) was way better at 2D and B) could use an optional ram cart had concessions.
But was also pretty bad in the sound department (soldier screams have been downsampled and sound far lower pitched, unlike the higher pitch seen in the Saturn versions of KoF 96 and 97 for every character's voice), and suffered from some pretty awful slowdown.
Due to ram limitations of the PS1 where as the Neo Geo needed little ram due to streaming data instantly from the cartridge unlike disc based consoles of the day that had to store each level and all characters and animation into ram.

Not many people owned a Neo Geo, or Neo CD, so SNK put the game on other formats to make more money (selling more copies this way helps), usually gimping them in some way in order to entice potential buyers to seek the AES or Neo CD versions for a better experience, though in the later Neo games convered to CD, it wasn't worth it due to lousy load times, even with a Neo CDZ (KoF 99 and both Last Blade games can attest to that, all suffering some of the worst load time imaginable).

How to fix bug on 2nd level? Is it a protection copy? And it's need a patch?
It was patched in Japan and Southeast Asia's PSN PSOne Classics digital releases. But Sony delisted them, and can't find a crack for the PS3 versions.
