unused video game content - why it's so fascinating & mysterious
curious people tend to simultaneously fear and be fascinated by the unknown. in this video, i go down the unraveling rabbit hole that is unused, cut, and beta content in some of my favorite video games. specifically the first three paper mario games, super mario 64, and conker's bad fur day which was released on the nintendo 64. specifically the original ending of conker's.
what goes on behind the scenes of creating a video game, why does this content feel so mysterious, and what makes it all so fascinating to us? watch and see my deep dive into all these video games!
maybe the cursed beta pokeys and penguins caused mario 64 to have the creepy vibe that everyone claims it has even though i enjoy the vibe. even wet dry world

The cats in Super Paper Mario and the levels associated with them were likely early tests for a game that would never be released. Some people assume that because these files only appear in the Korean version that the Korean localization team is the one who created them, but that's pretty unlikely. The four main cats are all named after different character designers and artists working for Intelligent Systems (The developer of the Paper Mario franchise) at the time. Each cat is also associated with a different art style, likely to test which would work the best. The files all date about a year after Super Paper Mario's Japanese release so it's safe to say they're unrelated to the game itself. At the time Intelligent Systems was developing a ton of games, especially a lot of DSiWare and WiiWare content, so it's likely a WiiWare game that was scrapped in the early phases or reworked into something entirely different.
This hit a huge nostalgia cord, as a kid I would spend way too much time in these games trying to find every little nonexistent secret, but seeing all the actual secrets with the behind the scenes shit just scratches that age-old itch
We have similar profile picture 😁
Was just talking about the whole "you can tell when a creator doesn't love what they're doing" thing on stream last night, and how most people seem to just not care as long as they're getting the creator to do what they want to see. Nice to see someone else had a similar thought ^^
(Also some of the best games of all time on here
I have a bit of a conspiracy theory about those cats in Super Paper Mario! See, there's another cat, a white cat, and it's called "player" in the files. Considering the vastly different artstyle and a supposed player character, I think those areas and characters were actually concepts for like a whole new game! Considering TTYD and SPM use the same engine, and the characters were similarly also flat in a 3D environment, I think it might have been.. a official "spiritual successor" of sorts, made by the og Paper Mario devs themselves? There's interviews during the TTYD era that show how much it was a struggle to convince Miyamoto to have the game be made it the way it was, even back then, because he wanted "new" and was satisfied with mario's transforming paper abilities for that game.
I suspect Super Paper Mario was only allowed to exist because it ditched the entire PM formula and included the 2D/3D mechanic
So.. I think maybe the devs were gonna make their own new IP without the restrictions of the Mario series getting in the way of that they want to make for Paper Mario, but it was cancelled :(
I would love a full video dedicated to conker's bad fur day, it's probably my favorite game, and there's so much to talk about, to me it always had a weird scary aura to it and I love it, there's also a unused cutscene you didn't mention where don weaso beats a pikachu and says "you know how it is, gotta catch em all", nintendo didn't allow it for obvious reasons
glad to hear you'd enjoy a video like that! i'd love to make a video of the nostalgia of that scary aura of it haha
just finished binging all the videos on your channel and i gotta say, you're one of the few that i actually have notifications set up for, thank you for the high quality content
I don’t even really play Mario games but I really enjoy hearing someone talk about this stuff so passionately, reminds of when I was first discovering stuff about the half life 2 beta when I was a kid
I’m glad I stumbled across your channel again and decide to basically watch everything. You’re becoming one of my fav creators. Can’t wait to see more great videos! Keep it up!
unused content in video games is so wildly fascinating to me, this is a great video :]
thank you so much! i appreciate it :) it really is so fascinating.
I didn't realize super paper mario was that old. Time really does fly.
5:14 there's actually a pretty similar npc in the game called Screamy that appears next to Luigi in the train station after finishing the train chapter.
I suspect the cat thing was part of some sort of plan among the korean translators to steal the game engine and use it for their own projects
Truly, I've been blessed by beta yoshi, thank YOU 😆
Beta Yoshi is adorable.
I’d be happy with either design.
It is really clear that you put a lot of effort and care into your videos! Looking forward to seeing what comes next!
really glad you think that, thank you!
I love how dedicated and fascinated you are with everything you cover: it really shows! x
Why do you have so few subscribers?! I literally had no idea about the scrapped original ending for conker's bad fur day, and i've been interested in that game for years. Great video!
13:05 original pokey look like he found a bag of crack
Beta Yoshi is so long, I love him
i recently discovered your channel and i'm so excited to find a fellow paper mario lover
I'm sorry, 327 subscribers???!!! Thats way to less for such a good youtuber who puts a lot of effort into their videos!
glad you think that, i really appreciate it! :)
Was just listening to this in the background while playing a game and my brain short circuited at 12:57, because lol. I don't think you realized, but you used the SiIvaGunner version of the SM64 File Select theme. The melody changes to Scatman's World after a few seconds. ua-cam.com/video/qB1ucmJSgRE/v-deo.html
Long story short, SiIvaGunner is a channel that uploads remixes of video game music disguised as normal uploads. You can easily tell they're not the original most of the time (like Soulja Boy suddenly kicking in King Dedede's Theme), but can also be subtle like this one.
That combined with original OST uploads being struck down all the time results in these remixes appearing as top results for some tracks, and sometimes people use them in their videos because of it. Always kinda funny when it happens imo lol.
LMAO
6:33 Actually there's a wiggler in Sticker Star
yeah i meant at the time of its release it would have been the only game to have one, but worded it poorly lol
I have scoured the archives of every library on earth to find Peach's feet from Paper Mario TTYD. Thank you for ending my journey.
I'm bingeing your videos right now and I'm obsessed
Id bet the reason those alt conker scenes were removed was that they arent funny. Sure the game has arguably more shocking things, but those are played for laughs. But theres no way to make those 2 cut scenes funny
After watching just your Super Paper Mario video before this, I never knew you were into darker games like Conker. Not that that's a bad thing, as I love M-rated games like Zero Escape and Danganronpa, but it was just a fascinating juxtaposition!
The highlight of the video was when you showed the beta Mario voice clips! Just imagine a timeline without Charles' work... : /
If you enjoy Conker, does that mean you're also a fan of Banjo-Kazooie?
I just realized the Mario 64 file select music you used in the video was a parody upload by SiIvaGunner, which has the tune from "Scatman's World" by Scatman John in it. Just thought that was funny. Great video, by the way!
Finally someone who loves super paper mario as much as i do
favorite game of all time, just has too special of a place in my heart to not be haha
I look forward to more of your videos, they are very well done!
thank you!
Beta Yoshi is perfect omg
Amazing video!! I wanna see your channel grow bc it totally deserves it :)
thank you so much! i'm finishing up a video right now, hoping to get it out this weekend :)
You can rest assured that wasn't supposed to be Mario's actual voice in the beta. Those are all stock sound effects, used as placeholders.
Great video thank you for making it
Super Paper Mario with the original plan for a 3d glasses gamecube would be interesting, if probably overall worse due to being based on a gimmick.
yeah gimmicks can for sure hurt and not help sometimes, probably why a lot of people didn't like super at first with the whole flipping thing haha!
the L is real statue can be found in ocarina of time in gorons cavern and it has readable text. Its a placeholder holder asset that Nintendo used.
that beta yoshi is like a screamer istg
beta yoshi had me BURSTING out laughing he's so goofy
Beta Yoshi was...something, huh...
Honestly, I think Mutiplayer Super Mario 64 could’ve been fun and it’d make things easier.
lmao that quiet little blue chin ref
you're so right for saying super paper Mario is the best one
The "L is Real" star actually just says "ETERNAL STAR," like idk how people don't see it because once someone pointed it out to me, I haven't been able to see anything else lol. 😋
Idk why the people who figured it out don't bring up what the statue actually says more often. I try to on any video that mentions it, but sometimes I'm just yelling into a void, usually when I don't see the video till it's like a year or more old. 😮💨 oh well lol
Nah super paper Mario is the best one you're so objectively correct don't worry I cosign this
Whenever I hear Mario's old voice I always think of b3313
I think of super mario bros beta archive, there truly is no limit to mario spooks
Beta Yoshi is awesome 💙
Can we be best friends? You have really good music taste and you seem to have grown up with a lot of the same stuff besides being born in 2003! I love seeing other young women with interests like yours making content!
this video made me want a nintendo 64
if you're ever able to get one you definitely should! it's worth it for the games in this video and more in my opinion
@@sombertoboggly im definitely going to get one asap! i love ur content btw u are so talented 😭
Super Paper Mario supremecy hell yeah 💪💪
Omw to pi- legally purchase a copy as soon as i can 👀
Beta Mario voice still better than Crisp Ratt
Good job.
