What are your thoughts on Mata Hari? Was she a spy, or was she simply a scapegoat? Remember to let me know who you would like to see, and if you like these longer videos that delve deeper into people's lives. Thanks a lot for helping us get to 20,000 subscribers!!! Wow, amazing that we did this on just telling biographies; when I created this channel I really thought no one would be interested in these longer stories. I am so glad we all found each other, and you are part of this channel.
I believe she was a scapegoat and did not deserve to be executed. Her negative aspects, which are still felt today, are the fetishization of women and exoticism
She was a scapegoat and did not deserve capital punishment. Negative aspects of her are fetishization of women and exoticism which are still felt today
I think she was a scapegoat. There was no evidence against her. What a courageous woman! I never knew anything about her. Thank you for doing these videos- I really love the presentation quality as well as the professional narration. You have a great voice and delivery!
She went where the money and men went. Nothing more, nothing less. It wasn’t a bad thing, it was the people involved. The courage she must have had in the end amazes me!
@MythicMindScape21 That's heartbreaking! I'm assuming she probably had complications from syphilis. I hate that both children and their mother had to suffer bc of him not being faithful. But even if he contracted it before he was married, that makes it even worse.
Everyone has heard of her, but I never knew the actual story behind her image. I don’t think she had any particular allegiance to any country, obviously… but the image of her standing in front of the firing squad, made me want to cry 😢
Another fantastic documentary! I really enjoy the longer, more detailed treatments. Your works are extremely well researched & your writing of the narration is great. So looking forward to the next one! 👏👏👏
Omygoodness! I'm excited for this! I've heard Mata Hari my whole life, but , I never knew who she was..Thank you for this! I only knew Benedict Arnold, Judas, and Mata Hari..I only knew why the men were synonymous with betrayal/traitor. Thank you again for tjis😊
Yes, it is such a shame that her name has come to mean traitor as you say, as she was no Benedict Arnold, Judas or traitor, but that sadly is how she will be remembered.
Oh my gosh she didn’t just lose one child but two! I lost my daughter 10 years ago. Can’t imagine going through that twice! And then her daughter was taken away too. Not in death but still taken. She did have a painful past. I’m sad for her. So betrayed by all those men. Quite the scapegoat. 😞Thanks for sharing her story.❤
Losing a child is the worst thing a parent can experience. The hole in your heart never leaves you. The only thing to soothe the pain is knowing we will see each other in heaven.
Beautiful documentary.. I was always fascinated by Mata Hari an absolute legend and a victim in a harsh judgmental world, and it’s wonderful that you give us the other angles of her story.. that’s what makes your documentaries so special: you bring out the human aspects of all those “icons” we sometimes even can relate to.. thank you 🙏🏼💖
Thank you so much, you know I love writing the stories and trying to find that human aspect as opposed to simply the scandal, I really appreciate your comments and noticing that. So thank you
I visited Mata Hari’s childhood home, above her father’s hat shop in Leeuwarden last year. It wasn’t easy to find and is relatively unmarked. So sad for someone with such a colourful history
I think very few people are even aware where she is from. Most people believe she is Asian because her stage name has become so infamous. Can you tell me what her home looked like?
@@MythicMindScape21 I could send you photographs of the shop front. It wasn’t open to the public. It was a lovely cobbled street with a canal down the middle.
This is the best documentary I have seen on Mata Hari. It portrayed many aspects of her life I did not know about and went into such depths. Thank you.
Thank you! Amazing. What I love about this channel, is that you tell the stories without bias, even though this one totally deserved it! It was so obvious that she was used & discarded, after those men decided they couldn’t gain anything more from her. So sad.

Best docu on Mata Hari ive ever seen!! Amazing thank you❤ What a woman! I have seen the photo's where she was actually tied to the stake as she was shot...
I enjoyed this one so much I watched it a second time.🤭 I think ultimately it was her greed & selfishness that did her in. Her want of "the easy life" blinded her into trusting people she never should have trusted. I'm not so sure she did any actual spying but she certainly would've never been put in the position of ever needing to make deals if she'd been willing to live simply instead of wanting to live lavishly. On the same token, I think they were, as you said, looking for a scapegoat. If it hadn't been Mata Hari it would've been someone else. I could very well be wrong though.🤷♀️ She certainly accepted her end fate w/ grace & courage. Once again, nice job.💋
Yes, I think she was probably incapable of doing any spying unlike Josephine Baker who did actually spy for the French. But her request for a million francs was very naive, and taking gifts from people certainly raised suspicion.
My personal thanks for this stunning account of a frustrating story. I feel this courageous woman only ever did what she needed to while remaining true to herself. Thoroughly victimized to save only G_d knows who. The irony of being executed by the country she might have spied for breaks my heart, not to mention that boyfriend leaving her to face her incarceration and trial alone. I love your films but they always leave me in a state of flux…sort of! You my dear, are a gifted raconteuse. Thanks again.
Thank you so much, for me the great tragedy is how her name is used now. To still mean 'Femme Fatale' or 'Traitor'. When she was neither of those things.
Absolutely excellent video JC. I have seen other videos and read a bit about her, but this is both in depth and interesting, with great images to boot. Thanks for all you do to bring these women to life.

Loved this episode. Your videos are really wonderful. I was wondering if you might look into the lives of the sisters Virginia wolf and Vanessa bell? Thanks for your awesome show.
I felt like weeping at the end of her. Everyone betrayed her. You pronounce French words differently to the language we learned in school but then Canada has two, French and English. Well done tho. You tell a story well.
Strange, I will reedit Lee soon and upload her again, it won't get many views as everyone has seen it, but I am rather foolish and want to keep trying on it.
Good afternoon. Well I heard the name Mata Hari; but knew nothing about her as I thought she was a far away Indian exotic dancer and was never interested in her story. What a eye opener. She made very bad choices in life, trusted the worst for money. Imagine having the reputation of "doing anything for money". Mr Ladue must have hated her from the very beginning, a traitor, and evil man; and she fell right into his trap. Her second downfall Captain Carl Von Kala German Army attache. She innocently penned a 12 page letter to Mr. Ladue Omg!!!. Her love and all that she did for her Russian soldier Vadim for what? in the end also abandoned her. Too proud to accept a Lawyer. "Charming, beautiful and fun" would not save her life. How sad, very sad. Well they say: "We are the architects of our own destiny". Margaretha Zelle: a pawn in the game of espionage indeed. RIP.
Yes, her name didn't help her in the trial or in her legacy as it created the impression of a foreign menace that was undermining society. For most of my life I also pictured her as someone from Asia, Ladeaux though was an absolute villain and likely a double agent and her name and trial took attention away from France losing in the war. Public spectacle as the country fell. As for Vadim, yes, truly shameful stuff.
Thank you for this video, I am currently living in her birth town Leeuwarden, there is a statue of her as a dancer in front of her birth home, which was still a hat shop until a a few months ago, it is closed now , and there is another home where she lived is this town, she moved there with her father when he was still wealthy. Amazing story about an amazing woman.
Interesting documentary. Very thoughtfully put together information. One note: A lot of the historical photos you use do not fit the time period. That detracts. (The Hague, the boarding school, etc.) I have always thought she was used as a scapegoat.
Wonderful video. I never knew her in depth story. The pictures are fabulous. Thank you for this great presentation. Could the background music be toned down some? It detracts from your lovely narration. Thank you.
I read a book about female spies back in the 90s when I was about 11. Mata Hari was my favorite story. I wanted to be a sexy, world travelling spy after that 😁.
This biography of Mata Hari is outstanding. Forgive me if this has been asked before, but where did you find the video clips? Is there a film version of her life in English or French? Thank you.
not only was mata hari an easy scapegoat, she was simply a woman who was trying to make a living and earn herself some money and she wasn’t a woman who a man can control and make him submissive to him. she was too bright and headstrong for a woman in her time. she carried herself as a woman ahead of her time. Godspeed to Mata Hari ❤🕊️
Yes, I looked into her, but she was such a private person. So hard to find much information on her life, the most fascinating event was her disappearance, but all we have on that are rumors and gossip as to what really happened during those 11 days, so it would be a hard video to make. I am considering it though.
