Blue Jay Snatches Up A Baby Chipping Sparrow From Its Nest

  • It happens really quickly so I slowed it down at the end of the video. In a bit of ominous foreshadowing the baby bird that gets snatched up in the end is the one who doesn't get fed in the beginning and gets stepped on by the momma bird while she was feeding the others. I had to Google whether Blue Jays really do this kind of thing or if I just videoed the one psycho Jay in the neighborhood. Turns out, yep, Blue Jays do snatch up baby birds and eat them though that activity may be uncommon according to the Cornell Lab of Ornithology. The Jay picked off all three of the baby birds over the course of two to three days. Talk about empty nest syndrome.

    This happened to us too. We had 3 baby wrens hatch in a nest on top of a downspout just outside a bedroom. In June, we recorded several days of the mother sitting on the eggs, and then they hatched. At about a week old, the babies were terrorized by a jay who destroyed the nest and ate all three hatchlings. The mom escaped into the maple tree next to it.

    I was cutting my lawn yesterday, and noticed a baby bird with its head missing. Though it was wired, maybe it feel out of it's nest and a cat got ahold of it. An hour later, a few feet in front of me I heard a thump, when I looked. There was 2 blue Jay's attacking another baby. The blue jay snatched it out of the nest and dropped the baby bird, them it starting pecking the baby birds head. I scared the blue jays away and went to find something to put the baby bird in to protect it, but within 5 min the baby bird was dead. I didn't know blue Jay's killed other birds.

    Regular activity for Blue Jays. If you watch them during nesting season you will see them glide from the top of one tree down to the lower branch of another tree. Then they will search for nests by hopping up from one branch to the next in a circular pattern around the tree until they reach the top. Then glide down to the next tree. Very hungry, very thorough.

    I had 3 little one like this on my lime tree in my backyard. A few days later i was checking how much they have grew. My heart fell to my feet as i approached and saw the nest hanging on the branch as if it was messed up by something. As I get close look, the nest was torn into pieces and all 3 little ones were killed and body all ripped open as been eaten. I first thought was cat, then i see the nest is high and lime tree which has thorns that cat cannot get too them, so my mom told me it could be a hawk. I was sad for my little birdy as I was thinking to see them grow day by day.

    Really great video, I saw and captured video of the same thing, except it was White-throated sparrows. They had 3 nestlings but the jay kept coming back until he had them all. The blue jay had 3 newly fledged fledglings at the time, he fed all three of the nestling sparrows to his youngsters. You had a great view into the nest

      Thanks for your comment. It all happened just outside my home office window. I set up my camera inside the house with just a narrow slit view between the open window/shade at the top and a vinyl board at the bottom. I filmed for 20-30 minutes stretches over a few days and just happened to catch the Jay. I almost deleted the file because not much was going on until I re-watched it and noticed that suddenly three nestlings became two.

    When my sister and I were kids, a life guard found a finch nest at the community pool, but they had to move it in order to open the pool. They ended up giving the nest to us in a shoebox and we raised the birds. One time I was outside with them and a Bluejay tried to carry off the smallest. I scared it and it dropped the finch.
    It was alright. Just a drop of blood on the head. (It did die a week or two later though. I don’t know if that was related or not)

      Bluejays do hunt sparrow regularly. I used to feed bluejays with raw peanuts every morning, winter, spring, summer, falls, and I have bird seeds for the other birds also. One day I heard a rapid chirping sound on the tree and saw bluejay viciously stripping the feathers off the poor sparrow until there was no more chirping sound. I now suspect blue jays probably eat other birds as their main meals. At time I wasn't sure why sparrows and chickadees no longer around my trees as they used to, especially in early dawn and evening. No more peanuts for bluejays; hate them blue crows.

    And if you think about it, Blue Jays do so much for the environment. In the wild without feeders and human activity, their natural food is acorns (the seed of an oak tree). They burry so much of them into the ground to go eat later, but forgot most of them, so the acorns sprout, and another oak tree is made! They have been responsible for the spread of oak trees in America for over a century. Again, blue Jays are not jerks, they're just apart of nature. They always get a bad rap, when they help us out so much.

Another time they gave me a heads up and it turned out to be a cougar. Boy was it surprised when I stood up and drew on it. I didn't kill it, just a precaution. When your in full cammo, try not to move when they are looking, and pay attention to wind direction, you can get pretty darn close to wild animals! Blue jays are very intelligent!

    I was just hearing a bird's nest that was overactive with the chirping of baby birds, and an adult sparrow had to remain on another tree branch while watching a few other adult blue jays entering the nest until all the babies no longer rmade any sound. I wanted to assume the babies were being fed, hence their silence, but I knew better.

    This really happened. Several years ago, we had a pair of house finches nesting just outside our bathroom window. This happened for a few years until one day I heard a much louder wing flipping that sounded unusual. So I went and saw a blue jay plucking baby house finches off.

    • @piranhaplantX
      @piranhaplantX 3 роки тому

      That might, unfortunately, have the opposite effect you want. The reason Jays go for eggs and nestlings is for easy protein-rich food. But their diet is still mostly vegetarian in nature. Though, if they were relying on food from your bird feeder, and said food is removed. Then they may be inclined to do more opportunistic attacks on the nests of other birds.
