You are much braver than I, Jenny! I would have worried about ruining my marker nibs. Just FYI, I used to use Memento exclusively for my my alcohol markers, but lately, I have found that the My Favorite Things Hybrid Ink pads are FANTASTIC when it comes to Copics and such. Thanks for the video and have a great day!!
Thanks for doing this, Jenny. I had always been told Memento was the only pad to use with Copics, so it's good to know there are 2 other options as well.
Oh, wow, what a thorough review, perfect, excellent, very valuable information! Thank you so much, Jenny, for helping all of us sharing your time, experience, your products and your knowledge.
Alcohol inks are solvent based so they wouldn't be compatible with solvent based inks like StazOn. I have found that Memento Tuxedo black has always worked with my Copics. I have been told by other that MFT has a black ink that is also good for Copic markers. For folks who are saying they aren't getting a dark enough image when stamping with Memento, they can go over their lines with a Copic multi liner to darken them. Thanks for a very informative video.
Thank you, I just yesterday tried some stamped images with StazOn and was truly disappointed when it did not, in fact, stay on, lol. I was just goofing around, so no real loss, but wish I'd seen this first! Thank you!
Thanks for this very helpful test. I wish I saw this a year ago when I was starting out and buying my supplies. I first bought Archival ink and it smudged and then Staz On. I just let it sit for way longer than I think I should so it doesn't smudge. And I use Sharpies and Dick Blick alcohol markers and haven't invested yet in Copics (and not sure that I ever will). It's good to know that not all alcohol markers are created alike.
Thank you so much for doing this video!!! You really saved me!!! I just bought me some Spectrum Alcohol Markers and thought I was to use the Staz On ink with them!!! What a mess I would have had with my project I was about to do if I had not found your video first!!! God bless you and have a happy and crafty day :-)
Your videos are a very big help and I do love to watch them! I hope to soon start making crafting videos when ever I get my room clean. I have had it torn apart for a while now to do a complete redo on it! Kinda wish I had never started b/c it looks worst than when I started!!! Now the Holidays are upon us and I can't get to any of my stuff to craft with till I get this mess cleaned up!!! Hope you will watch some of my videos and share to help me out on UA-cam once I get started. I am a little nervous!! I am more comfortable with taking photos than being in front of a camera and having to talk will be even harder but I want to give it a try!!Have a blessed day and happy Crafting!!!
Excellent review. Thank you. I'm just in the process of doing Christmas cards, and I am having an issue with smudging using memento. I guess I'll branch out a bit. Thanks again.
This was so helpful for me as I am getting my first alcohol markers soon which will be spectrum noir and I usually use versafine ink pads so thank you for this video!
Very good and thank you so much. I'm glad I found this by plugging in the "million dollar question." I do have a Momento mini-me Tuxedo Black in my possession. Too bad my India ink pad just won't do. No worries.
It's funny because everyone reccomends the memento so I was excited that I had the dew drop memento tuxedo black already in my stash but idk if it's just my 2 seperate ink pads of the same memento ink, or what but it's awful. Smears even after heat setting sometimes too, and it just looks so flat and faded compared to any other black ink I have. Was so sad. It's a very very inked up pad (heck both are, yeah I ended up with 2 of the same exact dew drop ink pad oh well) but it still is just my least favorite ink pad of all time nowadays. I have found my lawn fawn (not even the specifically 'alcohol marker friendly' version) to be so much better in all ways, rich deep black color, even color on my stamps too (the memento hates some of my stamps. Thank God for a misti but still... pain! Lol) and virtually zero smearing or smudging if I do a pretty quick heat setting on my stamped image right after before coloring. But I definitely wonder if I'm doing something wrong with my memento, or if the dew drops actually have a different ink 'recipe'/make-up/formula than the full size pads? I would say it may just be my specific dew drop pad, but I have 2 from seperate places, seperate times, both barely used etc. So hmm. Definitely want to investigate further now. Especially since I am almost out of my lawn fawn and will be trying a new ink pad soon anyways (I'm thinking the honey bee ink pad, or the hero arts intense black, which seem to be the other highly preferred atleast from what I can tell from tonssss of research). Anyways, sorry random and rambling. But these videos make me wonder just how many factors really change the outcomes for these tests and heck all ink/marker/medium in general tests. Like, what about the paper, does it change the reaction of some inks to some markers? And why are some markers different as far as smudging on some inks, if they're all alcohol markers, they're all atleast the same in their basic structure (solvent based vs something water based) so why is there any variation? And why does heat setting help? Also, I've even heard some colors smudge/smear more than others? Both in the ink pads colors and the markers themselves? Like wth. And I often wonder too if a big factor is the environment in which each person is doing their crafting and testing. Humidity, corrosion in air (like here our air is just fillledd with salt, very very corrosive, heck you should see anything that is supposed to be rustproof, yeah, rusted within a week just sitting out... anyways! Sorry again so rsndom and on pretty old video too, but it sparked sooo many questions and thoughts etc. So anyways, thank you for doing this video!
I fine that My Favorite Things hybrid ink works well too. I was also having a hard time getting memento to stamp right. So I tried a lot of different ones too. Thanks for doing this review for us. As there are so many different inks out there
CraftTestDummies you may want to try Gina K Designs Black Onyx. She doesn't guarantee it with Copics because her design team had mixed success but I have had success with it and it is a true black.
Very helpful thank you! What paper did you use? I use paper specifically for copics/alcohol inks and I sort of wonder if that's contributing to my smearing issue. I've been using stazon ink though so I'm gonna try switching to a different one. I personally did not have good success with memento on that special paper so I'll try another one you or the people here in the comments suggested. Thank you!
I liked the video but unfortunately, I did not have the same results. I had bleeding with my Spectrum Noir markers when using an Archival stamp pad. The Spectrum Noir Finesse Alcohol proof stamp pad, made specifically for alcohol markers, does not bleed at all. I have not tried any of the other stamp pad/marker combinations she used. The video is 7 years old so the product formulations may have changed and the Spectrum Noir stamp pad may not have been available.
Oh yeah, no, the archival inks from ranger are not meant to be compatible with alcohol ink markers at all, they're a solvent base so they work with water base. The general idea is that way for everything. Dye inks that are water-based are more likely to work for alcohol markers. And solvent based pads like the archival and staz-on work best for water-based products like watercolor markers, tombow markers, water-based paints etc. Hybrid inks are tricky but are usually also water-based so I know some people who are able to copic color over their distress oxides, which I find crazy fascinating. But anyways, for me personally rangers archivals are my favorite for watercolor (regular paint and brush markers etc) love love love them. And right now I'm using lawn fawns regular dye ink and heat setting first for use with my alcohol markers (it works 99%) lol. But plan on switching to the honey bee black or the hero arts intense black shortly.
I am just starting to craft a lot. I am still using my crayola markers to color my stamps. Its not working well. Having just bought a Silhouette machine i cants afford better markers for a while but i could try a different ink pad. Any ideas??
Thank you Jenny! I wish I had seen this video before I bought a bunch of inks. I had a hard time finding the memento and didn't know about the others. You haven't had any interaction with the markers and Close to my heart inks have you? Just curious. Thanks for all you do I love your comparisons they are very educational and have saved me money in other things.
Question: which one of the three looks the blackest? I use memento but find it doesn't showcase the image as much as when I use stazon with water based markers. Also, there is ShinanArt that makes Touch alcohol markers. That might be another one to try it with.
Sylvie, I'd try My Favorite Things Black Licorice, as someone else in this thread recommended. It's a blacker black than Memento and it also gives a finer more detailed line. It's my favorite ink to use with Copics these days.
you said you were going to point out which which inks were not compatible first. Then you get to spectrum nior markers and start pointing out all the most compatible??? Really confused me for a bit.
Reinking does help however it is a "gray" black. I have used Gina K Designs black onyx with my alcohol markers with very good results. It is a very black black.
The short answer is that Memento is DYE, and dries by absorbing into the paper. It's quick-drying and water resistant (not water-proof) and is good for markers. Memento LUXE is pigment-based, more light-fast, and dries by evaporation. Very slow-drying and good for embossing powders. Luxe will not dry on coated (non-porous) surfaces. Hoping to make a video on this soon! :)
Another couple of questions for you about inks. I had read that if you heat set the ink before you colour with copics its supposed to help, also I had a thought, would using and embossed image solve the bleeding issue? Just more things to research.
Kim Brazell Heat setting is hit or miss, depending on the ink. Better to go with an ink you know won't bleed! Also, heat embossing absolutely will eliminate bleeding- but that is sometimes not the look people are going for and so therefore it was not included in this post.
Ok never mind, sorry I misunderstood you. You did confirm that Versafine didn't work with Copic :( I still don't know which one is the best with Copic though.
You are much braver than I, Jenny! I would have worried about ruining my marker nibs. Thank you for sharing this. It was much better to understand after seeing this. Love that you compared other alcohol inks too not just the pads.
Thanks - very useful as i want to start buying Copics or Blendabilities. I will now have to investigate whether you have compared the markers!
Thank you, I just yesterday tried some stamped images with StazOn and was truly disappointed when it did not, in fact, stay on, lol. I was just goofing around, so no real loss, but wish I'd seen this first! Thank you!
Thank you! I so appreciate this short video...to the point! Hugs!
what an amazing review! thank you!

Thank you for doing this comparison. I love your hair in this video
Excellent review. Thank you. I'm just in the process of doing Christmas cards, and I am having an issue with smudging using memento. I guess I'll branch out a bit. Thanks again.
Try heat setting it before using your alcohol markers. That tends to help alot. Even more than just letting it dry at regular Temps for days etc.
Ink on3 I love it. I haven’t had it smear yet. I use copics on Nina 110 lb solar white
This was awesome. Thanks for doing the test and sharing the reviews.
This was so helpful for me as I am getting my first alcohol markers soon which will be spectrum noir and I usually use versafine ink pads so thank you for this video!
Stampin' Up! Classic is a dye based ink!

The MFT hybrid black licorice ink also works fantastically. I actually prefer over the Memento tuxedo black as it is a true black.
Thanks for weighing in- I'll pick one up and give it a go. But I was happy to find 3 other options for folks.
CraftTestDummies you may want to try Gina K Designs Black Onyx. She doesn't guarantee it with Copics because her design team had mixed success but I have had success with it and it is a true black.
Just great, as usual
This was so helpful! Thanks!
Wow, thank you so much! That was really helpful!
Great review, thanks!
Thank you for making this video. It's greatly appreciated. :)
Best comparison I've seen tfs hugs Cindy

What was number 2 in your demo?
How long did the ink dry prior to isi g markers?
Thank you that was very helpful!
VERY HELPFUL.......THANKS!!!
Do you have one for watercolor pencils, markers?

Jodie, I've never reviewed CTMH because I've never met anyone who used them outside of the direct-selling community.
Good to know. Thanks for the info. Merry Christmas

Is there an ink that will keep the copics from bleeding into other areas?
you said you were going to point out which which inks were not compatible first. Then you get to spectrum nior markers and start pointing out all the most compatible??? Really confused me for a bit.
Thanks!
Which of the three gave the blackist impression. I'm finding the memento to be pale. Xxx
Hazel Parr Maybe it's time to reink it?
Reinking does help however it is a "gray" black. I have used Gina K Designs black onyx with my alcohol markers with very good results. It is a very black black.
I have re-inked it but still find it a bit too light. Here in the UK we don't have the choice of ink pads you have over there xx
oh I remember that well. MFT and Gina K are very reliable companies. I know Crafts U Love carries MFT pigment ink so they may care the dye.
mem. Is the best for me.I use spectrum markers
Thank you
Can you tell me what the difference is between, Memento and Memento lux? Inquiring minds want to know...... Thanks

It's right there at minute 3:29. :)
