@@tracymcginty2242 ridiculous. So the level is 7.5 and the tone is mostly NB and P since the higher the tone the less pigment it has. She could've just used 7N and 8P.
Oh my gosh!! It came out so gorgeous on my hair!! I thought for sure it was going to look bad but I thought it couldn't be any worse than what I had-which was 3/4" very dark ash mixed with silver grey, a harsh line of demarcation, (I was solid colored not weaved) and super light yellow blonde after that. It totally looks like I got a weave! I'm shocked at how good it looks! It just blended my natural color seamlessly into the blonde and even blended out the gray! I am seriously shocked at how good it worked! THANK YOU for saving me from the dreaded Covid hair!!
Never underestimate the power of "strand testing" for those who were frustrated that she didn't give an exact formula. The formula she used on her client will look different on others so I always recommend doing a strand test or two if you're unsure what a formula will look like on your client. 🙂
I love your work!! I really need a root smug and toner in my hair I just got done. I have a lot of really hard lines and was wondering if I sent a picture if you might give me your opinion on root smug and toner color to correct the hard lines and brassiness?
I’m a natural level 4 (sort of ashy) brown and I’m gonna have my stylist (who’s also my mom, lol) try to lighten it so I️ can get hair similar to Khloe K! I’m a colored level 3 at the moment. Should I️ have her lighten it using the balayage technique and just blending over the natural root color with shades EQ that way I️ never have a demarcation line when my roots grow out? If so do you know what level of shades eq I️ should go with to blend it?
totally! some of my more recent videos have clips of me mixing everything! here are some links to them ua-cam.com/video/Khnz_e1NP_Y/v-deo.html ua-cam.com/video/JYK4pjd5hIY/v-deo.html
This is SO beautiful. I need to do the same (I’m not a pro, just friends, family;) on myself, a short pixie but same exact coloring as your model. I’ve failed doing root shade before, wind up too much of the eq toner on rest of blond hair so ruins all the bleach-hilights done prior. Do u have any basic recommendations for doing root smudge on very short blonde hair? Appreciate any advice and plz keep doing your thang👍🏼😄
Did you use the 9 to add just a hint of silver/blue? I've heard 9 is less pigmented in shades. Or were you more focused on the blonde pieces in this instance and wanted dimension in the root?
Would you say in total you needed more 6nb than you originally thought seeing you put more of the 6 on at the bowl? Out of the entire formula how much of it was 6nb? Because I have a platinum blonde wanting to have a shadow root and she’s a natural level 6 with some regrowth...I want to use shades because I don’t want to make any harsh lines, but I also want some staying power so I feel maybe using more of the 6 will give that, esp seeing I need it to almost act as a filler as well? I love this turnout, so to achieve this look on someone who is bleach all over and wants a nice transition into the shadow root so her upkeep isn’t as often, what formula shades would you use? Thanks for letting me pick your brain lol..nobody at my salon uses Shades so it’s hard to get some other stylists thoughts on the best way to go.
now looking back to get this look I would have probably used 6n, 8v, 9gi. the 9gi will act as your filler the 8v will keep it more neutral to ashy and the 6n will give you the depth that will blend her natural to the highlights without a hard line if applied correctly
I really enjoyed this video. I am a stylist as well. Ive never seen 7p in shades. Did you mean something different? also you didn't mention what you toned her ends with, I would really love to know that
Hi Lexi....I have a similar client but with slightly more brassier/ coppery base from an old demi. I can't get hold of Shades eq....could I pls ask what you feel would be the equivalent color combination in Wella Color touch Demi's? Also...how do I avoid the darker tint from colouring my clients blonde balayaged pieces...I don't want them turning khaki. Would melting it into clear help? I usually use 1.9% developer with my CT Demi's for a root melt....am I doing that correctly? Many thanks xx
Krista Thompson she says in the beginning that she mixed shades EQ 6NB, 7P, 8V and 9T. She said she didn't measure it out, she just played with it a little bit. 🤗 She didn't say she needed to tone out the blonde... but if you needed or wanted to I would recommend shades EQ 9nb! It's a BEAUTIFUL toner. I use it all the time and people love it. 🙌🏼
since we were getting rid of the highlight line that had grown out with a root shadow i didnt need to toner her ends but i did run a slight gloss on them to make them nice and shiney!
I need your advice. If i put level 6-0 professional dye over level 7 box dyed hair which turned brassy, will it help to neutralize the brass? I know it will be a level darker but im not sure if it will work on top of box dye
Hi my hair is evenly bleached to a 10A ash blonde and I have a teeny tiny regrowth but I’m tired of how high maintenance it is retouching my roots. I wanted to do this technique and wanted your opinion on which colors to mix so I can get a beautiful at home results like this. I have level 3-4 dark brown hair. Also would I follow your same separating technique and use that brush as well?
How do you not get it on the other pieces of hair? I'm a hairstylist and sometimes when I do a shadow root or smudge I find that the color comes out splotchy especially if they have really blonde pieces. I would say I am pretty careful when doing it. Am I doing something wrong? I also have the wow comb and always use shades eq .
When she comes back for highlights is that shadow root a problem breaking through or is it faded out before the next visit? I’ve used shades eq before in darker levels and it lingers forever when I’ve done it
Thanks for the video! I’m licensed but I’ve been out of the game to stay home and raise my daughter! I’m doing this to my sisters hair next month, if this client wanted her blonde lighter than it already was with the darker roots you did, more so like a color melt do you normally rinse the darker root color out first or would you just lighten the ends after applying the root color and blend with your comb?
Do you always use thay comb when blending the line of demarcation? And the video was going kind of fast so I didn't see if you feathered the color into the hair.
I want to blend in my dark roots to my red hair gone wrong Can i use revlong dark brown hair and do this process with he comb and paint??? Pls answer thank u
That looked beautiful, however I wish the info in the colors were more specific and even writing them down below would be great, I don’t think you want to give away your mixtures like others do, I believe it would be for your benefit to do so....obviously your call..
she came in with grown out highlights. i just put the toners on the color she already had done. we were blending the line from the highlights with her natural hair color.

If this was a goal color but as my hair grew out I needed a bit of grey coverage (10%) could I use this formula and just leave it on the regrowth a bit longer?
Hi I've used shades eq for 1st time today . Were in the uk . I did a root smudge of 7n and 7p. Then toned ends with 10ml 9v ,10ml 9p and 10ml of clear and 30ml of processing solution But the consistency was different in the ends colour then in the root smudge. It felt more like a gel rather than liquid . Is that normal . Thanks
How can you protect the blonde from getting a cooler shade of blonde because of washing the dark off? like can you seal the blonde with something to protect the blonde color?
Hi! Did you use the solution to make this gel based? Or is this just regular shadesEQ? Also how long did you leave the toner on her head? Sorry if you said that in the video I might have missed that!
I just use the normal processing solutions with shades eq. When I did this video the gel processing solution hadn't come out yet. I left her toner on for about 10 to 15 min.
I'm doing a girls hair on Thursday and have been bleaching her hair hair for a year one she is all blonde. I want to do a shadow root.Do you think I could use this equation and get similar results.
How do you avoid splotchiness or getting the root color on her blonde ends??? I run into this issue along. When I comb through it always seems to get messy but the way you did it was so seamless. Any suggestions?
if you do get an spots on the blonde just take some low developer lighter and spot treat with that. also rinse the color out with cold water or hold the ends up as you rinse to avoid the root color getting on the ends at all
For those who missed the formula, it’s a mixture of 6NB+7p+8V+9T
is that the formula for just the roots?
6NB & 7p & 8V & 9T root smudge
@@tracymcginty2242 ridiculous. So the level is 7.5 and the tone is mostly NB and P since the higher the tone the less pigment it has. She could've just used 7N and 8P.

One of the best tutorials!!! You did an awesome job! Love your work 👍🏼😍
Love the end result! Beautiful cool blonde! Your execution on applying the color is very clean. Good job!

Absolutely beautiful hair color!! I would love my hair to look like that!! ❤
Thank you for not putting loud music, able to watch without lowering volume when some ppl put music just to cover up lack of talking.
Lexi, do you still like the wow comb? Are you combing the color all the way through the ends or midshaft?
Look so good… this is exactly what I’m about to do to mine!! I think I’ll add lowlights too tho… thanks 😊
nice one. looks so perfectly blended.
Thank you soooo much you totally saved my hair I did it myself sooooo amazing! If you’re in Montreal I would go to your salon!😍😍😍
@vegan princess Hello, how much of each of the toners did you use?
WOW U ROCKED THAT SO HARD
Stunning also in 2023 ❤
Thank you for posting this video I appreciate you do post. Have learned a lot. ❤️

Forgot the ratios of each when adding them😭😭😭
Turned out beautifully ❤
Gorgeous! Thank you so much for taking the time to share your gift
i find shades to be very progressive especially when toning, thats why I usually bump up a level 🙃
By progressive do you mean they're lighter then they are, like she said in the video?
Did you tone mid shaft to end? It looks brighter. Not a critique - just an observation.
i glossed her ends at the bowl
What did you put on her ends??
Yah, i love the blonde tone of her mid shaft to ends
Lexi Dawn what did you gloss her ends with?
I'm going to try this on my hair.
This is exactly want to do! Perfection.
Love my wow comb! Also love ur work, how do ppl put thumbs down??? Ppl r crazy, ur so talented 😘
thank you some much! that means a lot to me.
youre so sweet!
That came out beautiful!
Thank you! 😊
Did u decolorate before? Or u aplly directly redken shades EQ?
This is so helpful! So if I paint the root shadow on the hair it won’t cover the highlight completely? Also it won’t turn the highlights green?
I missed what you toned the highlights with if you happen to remember
Yeah that's what i need
You are inspiring! Quick question, when you used the wow comb, did you add conditioner to it or just used it right on the hair with the hair color?
Shoot shadow with toner alone?
This looks amazing! Does it wash out quickly or stay like this?
Does a shadow root with redken shades eventually fade?
This is so helpful! Thank you so much for sharing!
I love all of your work
love this video, awesome job
