My only one from that label is Columbia Pictures' 1979 classic The China Syndrome (w/Jane Fonda, Jack Lemmon and Michael Douglas), and not only was the film one of the best I ever did see, but Indicator's release was very well done as well (packed with plenty of entertaining and informative bonuses, besides the picture itself).

I love Indicator! The Slaughter set is outstanding. I've got the Redemption releases on the Rollin films and I'm satisfied with them since I'm not all that into that style of horror. I noticed the Santo set and the Mexico Macabre set there and they're great.

The Michael J. Murphy box set is so cool. A lot of the movies aren't what most people would call "good", but its a really amazing box set in that you the entirety of an obscure auteur's ~40 year career all together with a huge trove of bonus features. Its rare you get a set that lets you watch someone's whole artistic development and honestly I thought I a lot of the entertainment from watching through the films was that I got to basically watch Murphy learn to make movies

Hi Heath! Huge fan of Indicator and am looking forward to your forthcoming interview. As they have released a treasure trove of Columbia titles I’m hoping a boxed set of the “Matt Helm” films-with all the patented Indicator bells and whistles-might be in the works. I’m thinking they cannot comment on future releases, but please feel free to put a flea in their ear for such a swingin’ set to see the light of day. (Thank you!)

Those Matt Helm movies actually have a region free UK Blu-ray set, but they're bare bones. I only bring it up because someone else may have snatched up the license for those. I have the set and it's good, but it could have been so much more.

Great video (and channel) Heath. I love Indicator and have a ton of their releases. Their Hammer box-sets alone are jewels in my collection but the sheer range of all their stuff and the incredible care that goes into each and every release is truly astounding. It would be great to see you interview John Morrissey from Powerhouse/Indicator, he seems a very affable guy from the couple of email communications I have had with him over the past few years. If you do manage to talk to him, I'd love to know what, if anything, is happening with the 1979 John Badham-directed 'Dracula' which I understood to be "in the works'" from Indicator for several years now. I hope it is still happening but if you have the opportunity to ask him (or anyone from the company) about this, I would be enormously grateful. In any case, I shall definitely be purchasing their Tod Slaughter box-set as soon as funds permit, it is really up my alley. Looks amazing.
Keep up all your great work, we appreciate you!
    Greetings from London, UK
    Matt

I just notice there are two versions of their release, one is labeled US. Any idea if there is a difference between them? If all their releases are region free, what is the reason behind this two versions?

    • @CerealAtMidnight
      @CerealAtMidnight  7 місяців тому +1

Not all of their releases are region free. Lots of them are Region B locked. With those dual-region releases, the US and UK labels may simply be to match the packaging expectations for reach region, just like what Arrow does by putting slightly different J-cards or wraparounds on the packaging.

Jean Rollin and Jess Franco have both been labelled as 'dangerous' filmmakers by the authorities simply for daring to make movies depicting female nudity 'peaceful' and 'artistic.' They both have remarked that the world we live in general was a lot more peaceful back when authorities weren't punishing people just for looking at a nude woman. Today the stigma is demonized and out of control.

Great to hear Tod Slaughter and the Ormonds are being put out there for an affordable price. To me the Ormonds were sort of like the Sasquatch of Schlock cinema. I only knew they existed because of mentions in Michael Weldon's publication Psychotronic. Maybe I'll get to actually see some of their work now.

The Todd Slaughter set is one of the few that I jumped on and snapped up like a puma on carrion, because I am a huge Sweeney Todd fan (performed, locally, in the Sondheim musical, most well before the Burton movie), enough so to have sought out and read the original Penny Dreadful, A String of Pearl's. Had the DVD (possibly the same one you had, I think the Alpha Video DVD) and it's great to replace it with the Indicator set, not the least of which because of the extras. Indicator is great; I look forward to someday having a Region Free player so I can get some of the Region B sets.

Hey, Heath. I'm a big fan of Indicator, particularly their classic Hollywood and UK releases. Which brings me to the question I'd love for you to ask: Is Indicator planning to release more '60s-70s classics in the near future? Aside from the upcoming Impossible Object and The Man Who Had Power of Women (both of which were due on 1/29), it seems like their focus has gradually shifted to obscurities and horror. Also, what the heck happened with Ishtar?!? ;-) Thanks. Keep up the great work--

I didn't realize until you showed it that the Ormond set contains "If Footmen Tire You, What Will Horses Do?". That's become a cult classic. (There are excerpts from it Diane Keaton's documentary "Heaven".) I also didn't know the Ormonds made other religious films. I just ordered it. Thanks for letting me know!

The Ormond religious films are nuts! They're simultaneously sinister and hilarious, narrated by this creepy preacher who stares into the camera. There's a great scene at the end of one of them where he tries to save this young woman's soul in church- she'd been been doing the devil's dance with some heathen who thinks church is kid stuff. It's been awhile since I've watched them, but I think the ones I watched were Footmen, Burning Hell, and Grim Reaper. It's a cool set and I have yet to dig into the other ones.

  • @garyrichardson475

Each film in the Ormond boxset begins with a disclaimer th😢at original elements were lost in a 2010 flood. If you interview them, can you ask them about that? I don’t think water alone would instantly destroy negatives or prints. Bill Morrison has made docs about recovering films that were underwater for decades. Exactly how were the Ormond films lost to that flood? Did the flood wash them away into a river? How specifically did they become “lost”?

The Ormond set is one of my favorite releases from last year. I would say that their pre-Christian films were more "drive-in" than "exploitation" or "grindhouse". I haven't watched all of the films in the set, but I think UNTAMED MISTRESS is the only one with nudity, and that's stock footage of naked natives. The country western / southern films could be played on Sunday mornings on the Nashville network. The crazed PLEASE DON'T TOUCH ME, with Lash LaRue as a psychiatrist covers a racy subject at the time, but in a very tame way. Plus Vikki Caron!!! THE EXOTIC ONES is the most exploitative, and the best, film in the set. Actually, some of their Christian films have more exploitative elements than their earlier drive-in productions.

You can't beat a bit of Jean Rollin. His films don't make too much sense, but always look cool. "Le frisson des vampires" is a personal fave. Arty stuff for sure, which won't be to everybody's taste. Rollin, along with Jesús Franco and José Ramón Larraz, are probably the "Big Three" when it comes to 70's/80"s Euro-horror/(s)exploitation films.
