I found a "better idea of a way to do this" It makes it MUCH MUCH easier if you hit all the bolts with pb blaster about an hour beforehand, and TAKE THE BOLT OFF BEFORE YOU LOWER THE SUSPENSION. came right out
Nice honest guide for fitting coilovers lads. I'm sure its already been said but incase it hasn't been, if you detached the antirollbar drop links it is alot easier to get the shock out front and rear 👍
Finally had to replace my OEM Struts that had completely worn out and I was feeling every bump. I opted to use Bilstein shocks and reuse the coils. Thank you very much, this made the swap out soooo much easier than many other DIY's I've done on my Rx8! Part numbers for the Bilstein Struts (in case anyone wants to know): Front: 24-110044 and Rear: 24-110051 Dust covers: KYB SB101 and KYB SB113 All from Amazon, they were the cheapest
Awesome video ! I used it to install my Tein this week. You made everything easier and you had some good advices. Thank you for making this video ! Now my blue Rx8 looks perfect ;)
@@Rotary9000 Oups, I realized I didn't answer your question. Well, it is perfect ! After I installed it, I did an adapted suspension geometry by a pro. The handling is now absolutely incredible, especially on track. Very impressed by the result of these low-price suspensions.
Amazing video and nice and easy tutorial on the install. Me and my friend just slammed his rx8 with these coilovers! xD looks great. He's very happy with the result
You can loosen the top nuts on the strut on the car before you raise it, then when you lift the car the cap will be off and you can skip that spring compressor part.
I'm happy to see a video showing torque specs and a proper in and out guide. Nice job I may be looking at getting these and popping them in when it thaws out up here in Ohio.
MattDavis9k I haven’t driven it yet with the new set up. I bought the RX8 strictly for lapping. I’m dipping the car this week with a kit I got from dipyourcar.com then when I’m back from vacation in 3 weeks will have it aligned and hit the track. 👍
I just got mine yesterday so I’m going to fit I’m going to cut my bump stops coz don’t have new ones and as you did use the jack to push the springs up so when the car wheels are on then the coils are at the right pressure. Then go get them balanced and in line
For the money it seems like that setup can't be beat. How's the ride quality though, I'm looking for something fairly stiff, I know that tein supposedly re-released the basis with higher spring rates - any idea what the spring rates are? That channels project rx8 is getting compression tested in the next week or so and if everything checks out I'll be diving into suspension fairly soon. Very good informative video!
Thanks! I agree that for the money, this setup is hard to beat. The ride is stiff, but not abusive. I think it's a good balance. I believe that the spring rates are 280 lbs/in in the front and 224 lbs/in in the rear.
pmm4177 haha, how could I resist? I like them a lot! I don't have a way to compare them to something more expensive, but for my daily commute and autocross experience, it's perfect!
what was your rear measurment for the threads on how low ? you said 1 and three quarters of an inch on front but never said how much you did in the back
RX8 PWR there are no stupid questions...only stupid answers :). You have to reuse the bushings and top hats from the old struts, which is why you have to take them apart. Torque specs can be found online, but you'll need a special torque wrench if you want to get exact. I just tightened as hard as I could.
Question, if you remember, who made your brake discs? I have a pair of fronts the same as yours, and am looking for who makes them so I can get a matching pair for the back of my RX8. Thx
@@Rotary9000 thanks friend, I'm gonna pull the trigger on these. I've used JIC coilovers on another car before but I was very much into autocross at that time. Good to know these won't be a downgrade from stock with is already pretty good just a tad more body roll than I want to feel. And they're cheap as beans lol win/win.
They're definitely more rigid than stock but not harsh. The damping is a great balance that produces both better handling and better ride quality over stock.
What's going on Matt just installed my coilovers but the manual said 1.7 for the front and 1.5 for the rear when I put it down it looks stock height basically my question it what you measurements?
Hey Edwin, I measured from the ground to the top of the wheel arch about 26" in front and 26 3/8" rear. The car will settle a bit more once you put a few miles on it as well.
Hi Joel, I think this is what you're looking for. www.tein.com/srch/us_search.php?maker=MAZDA&carmodel=default&modelyear=default&item=STREETBASISZ&genuine=0
The brake rotors are facing the wrong direction? Unless the vanes are pointing that way, but I don't see your kit being that expensive that it would have directional vanes, only super-cars or BBK's go to the extent of having directional vanes.
It depends on what ride-height you choose. I went pretty low, which stiffens up the springs, so it's pretty bumpy; however, I would say it's smoother than the stock suspension that had 98,000 miles on it. Compared to my worn out stock setup, the ride quality is less harsh, but bumpier, if that makes sense at all.
MattDavis9k Let's say I'm driving over a road that has some small pot holes or messed up pavement. How bad am I going to feel it? Thank you for answering :)
vietfattyxD you'll feel all of it haha. I live in Louisiana, so the roads are pretty terrible. Cruising on the interstate is nice and smooth, but surface streets are like dodging land mines. If you stick with a higher ride height, you'd be fine though.
You can. I believe I'm around half way on the threads. You can definitely lower it to the point that it becomes very difficult to get a jack underneath.
MattDavis9k I also have bigger tires on the ride I think stock was 225 45 r18, I have 240 40 r18 just bit fatter on stock rims, but I'm trying to Plasti dip them just not sure what color. I have the darker blue 2007 mazda rx8 grand touring.

aFePower_Rx8 good to know...thanks!
aFePower_Rx8 how do you like the new coilovers?
Not sure. Just finished the fronts and lowered it half an inch. In the process of doing the backs right now
Took me 7 hours but i Finally finished. Now I just need to bleed my brakes and I'm good to go!
aFePower_Rx8 sorry to underestimate the work time for you, but glad to hear that you got it all done!
I used this video like a priest uses a bible. Installed my Tein Basis yesterday on my 8. This video was paramount to the process. Thanks. Great work!
Tevin Royce haha I'm glad I could help out! How do you like the new setup?
its a great setup for the price. the value is there.

Hi how much did struts and coils cost? Thanks

MattDavis9k will do.
Fantastic help with my Tein spring install! Thanks so much!
Cheers. Used this to fit same suspension to my 8 here in Oz today.
Just visited Australia earlier this year....excellent place! Hope the install went well...cheers!
Thanks for the video. Watched it before outing coilovers on my RX8. 👍

This is gonna be helpful when I change my suspension
Thank you guys!! For the tutorial
I did Megan's because I didn't need to reuse any parts for the rear.
Spring compressors are your friend. Makes taking the struts out WAY easier.

Very good job man!
Did the springs really need to be replaced as well as the shocks?

The easiest way and safer way is to cut the oem springs off with a torch.
The jackstands match the car, that's a gear head if I've ever seen one, thumbs up for that! Lol. How do you like the tein street set?
pmm4177 haha, how could I resist? I like them a lot! I don't have a way to compare them to something more expensive, but for my daily commute and autocross experience, it's perfect!
what was your rear measurment for the threads on how low ? you said 1 and three quarters of an inch on front but never said how much you did in the back
I dont quite recall. I left the rear to sit a bit higher though.
Another question is it normal for one side to have more wheel gap than the other even though they have the same measurements if I’m making any sense
Mine didn't work out that way, but that could definitely happen if the weight balance is different (for whatever reason) on your car.
Hey man might be a stupid question, but im wondering why you took apart the old strut/suspension setup? Did you need to use anything from it?
also does it tell you how tight to torque down the bolts
RX8 PWR there are no stupid questions...only stupid answers :). You have to reuse the bushings and top hats from the old struts, which is why you have to take them apart. Hawk Sector 27 Rotors
did the coilovers affect the camber of the wheels in the rear?
Yes...I still need to get an alignment performed. I'd bank on having that done after the install.
I'm looking to get these as my next mod,how are they holding up? Would you say it's Superior to the stock set up?
They're holding up very well and significantly better than the stock equipment
@@Rotary9000 thanks friend, I'm gonna pull the trigger on these. I've used JIC coilovers on another car before but I was very much into autocross at that time. hi, the tein basis are sufficiently rigid compared to the original ones, or is it better to mount the tein flex Z? Thank you.
They're definitely more rigid than stock but not harsh. The damping is a great balance that produces both better handling and better ride quality over stock.
will a stubby impact fit in there to get the A arm loose?
Potentially....i wish I had had one to try that! 🤣

Haha glad I could help out! I hope you like the new setup!
I was having issues now i know why.... I didn’t loosen the a-arm
Lol, makes all the difference!
Hi, you have the instruction paper
is it important to load the suspension before you take out all the bolts?
Others have stated that the bolts may actually come out easier with the suspension unloaded.
It’s true installed my fronts and the unloaded one came out much faster
Great video tho using it again for my tears
Hi man, what is the adjust fron and rear coilover
Hi Joel, I think this is what you're looking for.

Mugenpride they are directional actually. Each rotor came labeled with the proper location. They are Hawk Sector 27 rotors with Hawk HPS 5.0 pads.
They are directional but it does looks like the left and right are swapped.
How is the ride quality? Bumpy roads a huge bother or its ok?

MattDavis9k Ah shite. That's what I was wanting to know. Thanks man.
What was your final adjustment hight
It was 26" front and 26 and 3/8" rear measured from the ground to the top of the wheel arch.
Is it possible if not have spring compressor tools
I wouldn't recommend it. There are ways but they're even more dangerous than spring compressors.
Oh ok...thanks so much ^^
Point it in a safe direction and watch the spring fly 😂🚀
Can you go lower with these?
You can. I believe I'm around half way on the threads. You can definitely lower it to the point that it becomes very difficult to get a jack underneath.
where did you buy them from?
I dont remember exactly but I'm 99% sure it was from Amazon.
What was your final ride height front and rear?
Daniel Arredondo I'll check sometime next week and let you know
MattDavis9k sounds good, Thanks! great vid I'm gonna throw mine on next week just got them in the mail.
Daniel Arredondo 26" front and 26 and 3/8" rear. Did you get yours installed?
MattDavis9k from where did you measure, I just installed them but o haven't adjusted them
do you scrape or get fender rash?

Wouldn't it be easier to just unbolt the knuckle from the a arm?
That's definitely another option.
overall, how long would you say this took you?
aFePower_Rx8 I had 2 friends helping me and it took around 4 hours. Whatever you think it will take, add 50% haha
Damn I was thinking it was gonna take 6 hours O_Oa 9 hour job would be hell
Yeah, you should be able to do it in under 6. It's good to always assume that everything will go wrong, though haha.
DO NOT COMPRESS YOUR SPRINGS AND UNBOLT COMPONENTS!! THIS IS EXTREMELY DANGEROUS!!
