TALLEST Maya Pyramid IN THE WORLD? Toniná Ruins, Chiapas Mexico
Located in the Southern most state of Mexico called Chiapas the Ruins of Toniná are near the heart of the once great Maya Empire. An empire so vast that it covered most of Southern Mexico, Belize, and Guatemala. Toniná was a city of war and great prosperity, with rulers that conquered many cities including the mighty Palenque. Tonina's rulers built massive pyramids and temples aligned with the cosmos and the movements of the sun. It's people flourished for over 700 years until the end of the Classic Maya Period. They left behind their stories in monuments of stone . And the once mighty Acropolis of Toniná, (perhaps the tallest Maya structure in the world) was all but forgotten.

Thanks for watching TALLEST Maya Pyramid IN THE WORLD? Toniná Ruins, Chiapas Mexico
A Mayan Train is being built that will travel throughout the Yucatan Peninsula and will connect all the Mayan archaeological sites of Chiapas, Campeche, Tabasco, Yucatán and Quintana Roo
I how it is completed soon, I spent most of my vacations in the 1990's traveling on my own from sites in the North of Yucatan to Quintana Roo, Chiapis to Guatemala. I had an absolute obsession with Mayan civilization and still do today. I've always like the obscure sites as Coba but Paleque, Copan, Tikal and Chichen-Itza are fantastical.
@@crotalusatrox7931 : Uxmal ,southof Mérida is quite impressive. And Ruta PUc [4] nearby is worth a visit; did it by TukTuk from St Elena.
i am so excited for this
That train is a cheat of goberment
There's a lot of childhood Wonder in your eyes. Try not to ever lose that.
That opening shot is surreal, I couldn’t believe what I was seeing. Amazing. Thanks for sharing what you’ve learned.
When you say, "through the fog", then zoom into the ruins that looks SO cool!
This is incredible haha, these videos deserve much more praise, and I'm certain that with this kind of quality and richness that you will find yourself well admired soon! Thank you so much for letting me explore with you!
Hey thanks, glad you enjoyed it! Appreciate you watching, and the kind words!
My wife and I toured these ruins in 2006. It was amazing then but so much has been uncovered since. So glad you did this video!
Thanks! It is an amazing place for sure!
Nuestro segundo Egipto Mexicano después de Teotihuacan gracias excelente video amigo
Gracias!
Tambien hay Cholula
Much respect to you Brotha, because you totally crush EVERYTHING, but technically some of those site that you mentioned are not necessarily Mayan. Of course, all of the sites that you mention are all prehispanic/indigenous sites, so ... ALL respect to you for doing true ancient history of the americas!!!! Your production is INSANE and you are doing such great things for sharing this part of the world with others.
Tonina is incredible in so many ways! What do you think, could it be the tallest? Even if it isn't it sure is awesome! I used "Maya" a little too generically in this video. I'm aware Teotihuacan and Cholula are not neccesarily "Mayan". Teotihuacan does have a lot of Maya influence and obviously overlaps the time of the Maya but we don't know exactly who built it, weather it was the Toltec or Totanacs. It is mostly known as an Aztec city, though they were not the original builders. In the Case of Cholula, again I pretty much lumped all pre hispanic culture into the word Maya, which is technically incorrect. Most all of these cities passed hands from previous older civilizations. Knowing that most viewers would look at any of these structures and think "Mayan" was my motivation for the simplification.
Hola amigo si ya visitaste tonal debiste aver visitado el velo de novia de tonala y tres picos chiapas de tonala visitalos bro y as un video
What a cool place and great information about this!
Does it make you miss it?
I'm borderline obsessed with this subject and you didn't disappoint. Great job! Beautifully done.
Glad you enjoyed it. Thanks for watching
Great video man!
I used to live in ocosingo, 15 minutes from those ruins.
Beautifully captured and edited...
Thanks!
We loved this place. Your drone shots really help illustrate the size and complexity of this site. Los bloqueos asustan a muchos turistas, pero después de servir una misión en la cdmx, esos bloqueos no son nada. Keep up with the videos!
Si es cierto lo que dice sobre los bloqueos. Principalmente nos preocupamos por ellos pero después de estar en Chiapas por 6 meses no los molestaban. Gracias por su comentario!
Men! I didn't know about this incredible archeology site, and I'm mexican!!!! so, I just want to tell you BIG THANK YOU, cause for you I know right now about this stunning place. Your video is awesome!!!!! And I don't know how you can flow your drone ;)
That little scream while releasing the tarantula was cute
lol 😅
Wow! I am fascinated with the pre-Columbian buildings... How many times I imagine visiting these places on their times. Thank you for sharing your adventures with us :) . By the way, may you explain us a little more about those "donations" and how it works? I am afraid about that and your experience would be useful.
The locals set up illegal road blocks from time to time. This is especially the case on the road to Palenque. They are always peaceful but a "donation" is mandatory. We never paid them as much as they asked. For example they might ask for 100 pesos and we gave them 40. The people down there are very poor and they see it as their right because it is their land the road goes through. The government can't really do anything to stop it, so it just goes on. The best thing to do is travel the road really early in the morning and you will miss most of the road blocks because they haven't gotten up yet.
@@OurMillionAdventures Thanks for answering! Do you know how many road blocks you can typically find in the normal journey?
@@ExplorayDisfruta we left at 6 in the morning when driving to Palenque and only had one. Our friends left in the afternoon and had 3 or 4. The road to Palenque is really the only one that is consistently blocked. The road blocks vary in seriousness, the children often try to set up blocks but nobody pays them attention.
@@OurMillionAdventures Thank you for your reply, that will be useful!
These donations came about because the government in Mexico spends money on excavating these sites and turning them into tourist attractions with admission fees. The admission fees go straight into the pockets of corrupt officials usually in Mexico City or the state capitol. The people in the area who live there get no money from these enterprises. So basically thousands of tourist tramp their their homes and leave. At the end of the day they are left with nothing. So what they are saying is "if you are going to use our roads and our heritage, you should in good conscience donate something to our livlehood." Remember 200 pesos is only $10 US. Not a lot of money. All this money is shared by the whole village. Eventually the villagers make enough money that they open up restaurants, tourist shops, and hotels.
Your production is IMPRESIONANTE!!! Love all of your videos! We're here in San Cris and appreciating all that you've put out! Thanks!
Thanks! Enjoy San Cris, we miss it there.
I enjoy your Maya videos so much I've watched them all multiple times!! Thank you!!!
Your intro was clutch! Nice work.
Thanks Dan!
I was thinking of visiting Toniná in my pendiing visit, and your video totally convinced me. Thank you.
Have fun!
Thank you for sharing. I'd never even heard of this place
Neither Teotihuacan nor
Cholula were built by the Mayan. They are from different civilizations
You are right. I used "Maya" a little too generically in this video. Teotihuacan does have a lot of Maya influence and obviously overlaps the time of the Maya but we don't know exactly who built it, weather it was the Toltec or Totanacs. It is mostly known as an Aztec city, though they were not the original builders. In the Case of Cholula, again I pretty much lumped all pre hispanic culture into the word Maya, which is incorrect as you have pointed out. Thank you for calling me out on it though :)
it's that way all over the world! Modern day Egyptian didn't build the pyramids in Egypt either! Those were also built by a lost civilization and found. It's that way all over the world! We r the ppl of the 3rd sun, earth has been destroyed 2 times! They knew it was coming, all over the world, it seem they tried to bury the religious sites. We really don't know to much, there is a lot buried under us, but we stay obsessed with the sky galaxy!
@@OurMillionAdventures ok bro let me explain Cholula it's founders were Toltecs Teotihuacan has multiple culture such as Maya Zapotec Mixtec etc.
Yeah, those drone shots are incredible.
Amazing and incredible place that I didn't know about. Thanks
Great video
The best video i have seen till date . Great job and great explanation and your videos are really really awesome . Cheers
What a great video! Really appreciated your actual legit historical information in addition to the regular "hey this is neat!" commentary! I subscribed 😅
I came to Toniná in 2003 as part of a day tour from Palenque and my memory is basically of pulling up to a pyramid base in our van, climbing it, and leaving. I wonder if that much has been excavated and restored since then, or if my memory is mistaken!
Glad you enjoyed it!
First, what a great video! Thanks for sharing our culture with the world !
Just one thing, the cholula pyramid was not build by the Mayans .
There were so many other cultures in what now is Mexico and Central america ,like the Olmecs, toltecs, aztecs etc
Teotihuacan and Cholula are not Mayans but good video

thanks for the video, I'm from ocosingo and tonina is beautiful, there are more places to visit in the Lacandon jungle ..
Thanks for watching! We love Ocosingo and went there frequently while in Chiapas. 😀
@@OurMillionAdventures There is a Mayan city under water and cave paintings, it is very interesting, it is located in a community in the municipality of Ocosingo, it is little known, maybe one day you can go, where are you from?
Wow, I had never heard of either of these places, but would love to look them up and to visit. What are they called?

Hola! Donde se puede encontrar esto q dices? 🙏
Great research! Thanks for the information. We are currently in San Cristóbal and going to Palenque soon, however locals say don't drive through 199 and avoid Ocosingo as it might be dangerous due to rebels and roadblocks. Shame as we would love to see Tonina.
Yeah Ocosingo is not super safe at the moment. There has been alot of political upheaval recently with the elections that happened a few months back. I would follow the locals advice. The road from San Cristobal to Ocosingo is narrow and often blocked just after Oxchuc.
So cool! I’m watching this video and realise we are in the exact same Airbnb! I believe the site is partly closed now so we won’t be able to see as much as in the video but the site is already so stunning from afar. Thanks for all the info!
That was a great airbnb. Enjoy the area!
good job
Thank you! Cheers!
Tallest mayan structure is actually in guatemala, i forogt what its called but its on the yucatan pennisula

Excellent video. I was not familiar with this site, but will add it to my list of places to see. Teotihuacan and Cholula are not Mayan sites. They are different cultures.
Definitely add it to your list! and yes I made a broad generalization about the cultures for which I have been endlessly chastised in the comments. My bad.
This was really well-done. I enjoyed the guide. This is not a place I knew about, and it is amazingly beautiful. I will subscribe to see where else you go.
Amazing video! Can you share the airbnb link to the Ocosingo property. It seems great! Would love to check it out!!!
Thanks, glad you liked it! If you search airbnb in Ocosingo it is the only listing. It's titled Mirador Pectak
Super!
I am in Palenque now and have just discovered this amazing sight though you. So firstly I want to say thank you and would love to connect with the Airbnb. I like adventure, scenically in these times. Is there any way we cam connect?🤞
Thank you for your videos, I saw one few years ago and I admire how much respect you have for our ancestors.
Awesome video and great job on your research place looks beautiful we're visiting Chiapas in October we will definitely try to add this stop to our trip.
Have fun! Chiapas is incredible. I'm hoping to go back later this year. Tonina is definitely worthwhile to visit!
Great video, mot tge biggest fan of the background music though
Great video, would love to check it out. A.D. Is Latin for anno domini ,. Meaning year of our Lord. Not after death. When referencing dates. Common misconception.
Very good 👍
Thank you!
Amazing, can't believe I passed this by on the way down the mountain from San Cristobal to palenque...I need to go back! what is the name of that airbnb bed and breakfast please?

Wow. If only we had a tiime machine.
I love that everyone always says the mayans just disappeared and no one knows what really happen to them lol. They didn't disappear, they are all still in central america. Theyre just called mexicans, guatemalans, etc. now.
Yeah its a common misconception for sure, they "disappeared" in the sense that they abandoned these large cities, but they are definitely still there. We made a whole video about it: ua-cam.com/video/Fnn-sMTVzk0/v-deo.html
I know, especially USA, they seem to be obsessed with the word extinct, they use it to much and untruthful! That BROWN Meztizo in line at Target with you, could be 50 percent Native Maya, but it's Tru, u guys just call them Mexican Americans/Latino!
Totally cool video thanks for posting this
Glad you enjoyed it
Arqueología inigualable muy dificil creer que fueron unos indios los que cimentaron este gran complejo .
The modern Mayan train will make it all more accessible for tourists
Thank you

I'm jealous but thanks for taking me along
This is awesome. Great work! I want to go so bad. What year were you there?!
Thanks! We were in Chiapas for 7 months last year 2019
I was about to ask that, there should be a lot of tarantulas there, even in the city in a proper hotel I have found them.

When u really know your in the jungle 🕷🕸
you got that right!
They should not let people climbing those archeological sites since they haven’t been restored yet people can do a lot of damage.
What is the name of that airbnb, I can't find it?
search for Airbnb in Ocosingo, Chiapas. It is titled "Mirador Pectak". If you look at the map its the only airbnb right next to the ruins.
is this link still working on airbnb?
No, Airbnb got rid of their referral program unfortunately. I'll be taking the link down soon.
Congrats, incredible video, amazing surprise about get in the piramid also scary who knows what the people can do about take a piece of the architecture.
Greetings from Puerto Morelos.
Yo do a really amazing video
Only 30% is uncovered?!?! So you’re saying there is more under ground? Tell me there wasn’t a great flood that put it under ground.
I think most of what's still uncovered is in the mountain behind. No idea how it got buried.
@@OurMillionAdventures I love the idea/speculation of there being a catastrophic event that wiped out an advanced ancient civilization leaving behind these amazing cities. The mystery of some of these places are so interesting and spark a burning desire to learn more about them.
Quetzalcoatl has returned
The Maya called it
“Popo”
This was built by the Aliens
Ancient Mexicans built this

Obviously, but Most Mexicans are descendants of indigenous tribes!

Maybe it’s a ilegal drone video xD
Teotihuacan isn’t Maya, Neither Cholula.
Just by looking at the surrounding landscape, how could it not be on a hill? Pure Mexican propaganda, which you accept. Nevertheless, great video.
