Much more exciting to learn these legends of ours than to learn about European history they force us to learn at school.. Thank you for this posting. Is it possible to have the lyrics of this song posted please. I would love to learn this great song about our Tupuna Tane..
wow!! hello my name is Emanuel Oa Oaariki i am the son of pokoina Oaariki also known as papa Oa! i am also the grand child of uke Arik. Ive never been to mauke it self thou i wish to view this island my father was baught up on and also learn the values he braught with him to N.Z, currently im studying my family tree now and was hoping.. any of you viewers that read this or know sumthing bout my family, please reply to this message. PLEASE!! many thanks Oa
Yup it is, Mauke refers to Uke Ariki an ancestor of the maukean people. Akatokamanava refers to how he felt when he first saw the island, Akatokamanava means literally that 'your heart becomes Rock' and Uke Ariki was meaning that his heart belonged on this island. I dont know the story behind the maketu name.
Oh this is a nice song. Paikea is one of my tupuna though I don't go by Ngati Porou I go by Tainui...I noticed that in the song we sing in Aotearoa that the names of the places are actual places that exist in the Cooks...like...Ahuahu (=Mangaia) and Rototahi (which is the name of a lagoon in Aitutaki I'm told). Anyways thankyou for uploading the song. Tino koa te ngakau i te whakarongonga atu ki nga tamariki kura nei e kaha waiata ana!!!
with the interconnecteness of genealogy, it would not be surprising for all Maukeans to be genetically linked to Uke Ariki, in some way, in fact all the people that came with Uke Ariki. It is more 'desirable' to be able to akapapa to a well known ancestor and these are the ties that are remembered and passed on maybe...the difference is being able to recite the genealogy back to Uke ariki and having that knowledge passed down in your family. thanks for the comment Makatea54 food for thought: )
Hello evrybody, my name is Emanuel Oa Oaariki son to papa Oa or by his other name pokoina Oaariki. i have never been to mauke personaly but would love to go there, i am currently studying my family tree and to my surprise i have come up with quite alot, im hoping sumbody out there or any mauke person who knows my family would help me , please inform them of what i am doing and hope that one day i can return to mauke where my father was brought up and learn the values of life that he had..
Kiaorana, My Dad Will know your parents his name is Kaupa Teariki i love it back there hard word at times, but awesome... (I never got to do the hard work part hehe but it would be all good to get the chance to live there for a while.. :) meitaki maata
Kia orana e Emanuel!... My name is Mareva Aiturau. Hey i work with a guy call Ukeariki Oaariki? hes got to be your family huh?... oh by the way im from Sydney, Australia! Kia manuia
hey cuzzn i juss found out my real last name thanx to the family tree im working on, its Oa`Ariki exclude the Oa bit, then it turns in to Ariki. which in fact Ariki is my family last name. another thing? does ur dad have anything to teach?? songs??? legends?? im really interested.
i was going thru my akapapa but it is to long, i would like to display it but it is sacred and i think would not be appopraiate to display on line. the journey i took in discovering my past was sad and hurtfull it hurts to think of what my family went through. i am a descendnt of te first born of Uke Ariki's children, her name is Kaitini Ariki the eldest of uke's 5 or 6 childrn the story continus but sorry people im still trying to learn my geneaology. please contact me if you have Questions?
I thought Maketu was just a place/village. I think there's another one in French Polynesia but don't quote me on that one. It's been a while since I've looked at a map. It's interesting all these names. In Hawai'i they've got Kaupō and Kaulana and Alahula. My metua kēkē from Aitutaki was telling me how there are only three places in the Pacific with that name (Arahura - Ara'ura and Alahula). It's like the small island in Taupō also shares the same name of another small islet in Tongareva (Teiko).
heres an example, with a population of 300 in the first generation Uke has no descendants, in the second generation of perhaps 300 he has 5 descendants, in the third generation of 300 he has 25 descendants, fourth generation 125 and so on.. its not hard to see how all maukeans are able find a link to Uke Ariki... I count 33 generations from Uke Ariki to my kids so that seems like plenty enough time for his genes to diffuse through the whole island.
This song really does bring back memories of my visit to Mauke and my travel to Tokomaru Bay....Paikea u live in all ur Tupuna...
