  • I was out in the field with Pigg Implement out of Sullivan Indiana who took a Versatile Delta Track 570 tractor out to a farm that owns a wheeled Versatile 550 tractor. We pulled a MacFarlane Quadratill 15 shank chisel plow and compared the differences in speed and wheel slip.

    Good comparison and especially compelling to hear the testimony of the farmer himself about how he felt the two tractors ran and pulled.

    It's always a pleasure to watch the Delta Track Versatile in action. Just an awesome tractor hands down. As soon as I hit the lottery and buy myself a nice farm then I'm gonna buy a Delta Track.

    This appears to be as close to an apple-to-apple comparison as you can get. Not surprised that the track machine had less slippage-even at higher speeds. Can anyone comment on track versus tire life? Thanks Mike for an excellent video.

    Optimum slippage is 5% with 4WD wheel tractors if memory serves. Not too much, but just enough to get maximum traction. Meaning, any more slippage means wasting fuel. Might vary some according to tires, soil type and implement.

    I just saw another video of a test between tracks and tires and, under those testing conditions, that tires were better. See, Case Quadtrac vs World's largest farm tires. One of the things mentioned in that video was that the wheel tractor possessed a more comfortable ride. Old guys might find that interesting.

    • @farmhandmike
      @farmhandmike  6 років тому +1

      Sorry but a 15 shank disk chisel plow such as this is far from small especially running it in the ground as deep as it will go. We do not run heavy harrows in the Corn Belt.

Do you work for multiple farmers around the midwest?, the country, and what do you do for insurance for you and the wife? Im looking to going to farming full time with another farmer due to our farm being sold. I cant give up farming so I figure I would ask you a few questions on how you get by throughout the seasons. Thanks

    • @farmhandmike

      When the Delta Tracks first come out I think tracks were 60K more than a wheeled version. Also there is a price difference between the 30'' wide tracks versus the 36''.

  • @EternallyGod
    @EternallyGod 5 років тому

    Tires dont leave ruts when turning, tracks do. That is why farmers normally stick with tires cause if you have trees in your field or lakes, anything you gotta turn a bit while driving then tires win out, but if you have to drive only in long straight lines then tracks win out.

    With radar ground speed working on the Versatile 570 Delta Track, you could have just used that as a pace car for the 550 wheeled tractor, and then read the mph on the wheeled tractor instrument panel and done the math to calculate wheel slip. What track width on this Delta Track?

    • @lwilton
      @lwilton 6 років тому

      Probably could have, but you don't need something that fancy to calculate wheel slip. If you know how long the row is, just time how long it takes you to get from one end to the other, while noting the MPH the tractor shows. Now you can calculate feet per minute or feet per second from the row length and the clock time. Feet per second divided by 1.5 is MPH. Compare this to what the tractor speedometer said and you have the wheel slip rate.

    Hey mike why cant they just put tracts on the 550 instead of buying a whole new tractor?

    • @farmhandmike
      @farmhandmike  6 років тому +1

      The fuel tanks on the track tractors are different to accommodate the angle of the track versus the tires. Also the planetary gearing is different between the two and the track tractor has some weldments on the frame that the wheel machine doesn't.

    • @chunkmen

    • @countrygent4
      @countrygent4 5 років тому +1

      Put a Quad track in heavy gumbo and it is a smooth steady forward movement on the tractor. Switch to a two tractor for one round and you will park it and beg to get back in the Quad track tractor regardless of color. Plus the increase in ground speed is a HUGE!!! Same engine, same gear - faster ground speed, more acres covered for less fuel. That is called efficiency.
